Hello all!

This is Chris from beautiful Austin, Texas here. Pleased to meet ya! I discovered this site a while ago, and I've very grateful for the training plans and the forums-- I'm amazed at how many times I've found posts from folks with the same issues I'm having (especially about putting down the beer and picking up the pace!) I figured it was about time to stop lurking and let ya know I'm here. Thanks!

Chris.

You are so right.... I don't know what I was thinking. Although for stout I have to say I prefer Young's Oatmeal or Double Chocolate Stout......

There are a lot that are surprisingly close to me. The Capital of Texas Triathlon (They have both sprint and olympic-length) is right here in town, and there are a lot more not more than 6 or 7 hours' drive. There's a bunch in San Antonio, a few in Dallas and Fort Worth and the Buffalo Springs Lake one right in my own hometown of Lubbock! I didn't even know it existed before, which shows you just how new I am to triathlons! I'm making it a goal to do the Capital of Texas one, which is over Memorial Day weekend. I know it puts the pressure on, but there's nothing like the thought of collapsing 5 yards from the finish line to motivate ya, is there? ;-)

I think theres a few people planning on doing the Lubbock one.

Congrats on setting yourself a goal! There's nothing like having a race on the horizon to get out there and do that brick!!

Good luck on your training!

Welcome to the T-Spot!  I was in the great city of Austin last weekend for Ride for the Roses.  It seems the city is built around physical activity.

You're absolutely right, Michael. With Lance Armstrong living here part time, and more hike 'n' bike trails than we know what to do with, it's the easiest place I know to get into shape-- and don't forget all the hippie food we have here, too!

Thank you so much for your warm welcome, y'all. I can't tell you how nice it is to know that there are so many great people doing the same thing! This makes me more excited than ever to get out there and do it!!

I ran out and back along the north shore of Town Lake earlier this month when I was in Austin - the funny thing was I didn't know that that triathlon existed there, and I thought to myself as I was running.........hmmmm...nice calm water - cool place for a triathlon swim, and you can run on this nice path!!

Chris, my Adobe is acting up and I can't open the link for the run map on the tri site. I used a cartoony city map w/ businesses on it to figure out where I was when I was running. Do you or ANYONE ELSE know the distances along Town Lake?

I took a bus from my hotel to E 7th and Pleasant Valley and walked down to the water and started running from there to the Pool and back. I'm on a number kick as of late and am craving stats. I already decided after the fact, that jumping off the bus in that area before sunrise wasn't the smartest thing I've done that week....so please don't admonish me for that.

Hey there!

I was away this weekend, so I didn't see your reply till just now. And according to about.com, the entire distance of the hike & bike trail is about 10 miles. I never run the whole thing because it's too crowded when I'm there, but I assume that means that the trail goes from I-35 all the way down to Austin High School. I know that the loop from the Congress Street Bridge down to the Lamar pedestrian bridge is 7 miles, or thereabouts.

And it's not dumb to go down there at sunrise, so don't feel bad at all-- take it from me, you wouldn't be the only one there at that time, and I've never heard of anyone getting mugged down there in all the time I've been here. I hope this helps the next time you're here!

Oh, by the way, there's a handy-dandy distance chart (that doesn't require any misbehaving adobe applications) at http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/trails.htm.

We have a few hills here. We're on the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country, so the further West you go in town, the more hills there are. It's nothing like San Francisco or anything (Heaven forbid!!) but there's enough here to challenge a Flatlander like me! :-)

Greetings from a former Texan. Born and raised in San Antonio (well, Boerne actually, if you're familiar with it), college in Waco, but left back in 96. My parents still live there and I go back to visit, but I have to say that Colorado rocks.

However, I've always said that if I ever move back to Texas, Austin would be my choice.

Austin is a great place to ride. Texas has become much more cycling-friendly since I left. Good luck with your training and welcome!
