Subject: "intestinal issues" on the run.... warning: "earthy"

So I am beginning to become distressed... just about every long run I have had over the past month or so I have ended up cramping or needing to use a restroom or emergency stop in the bushes...

and they aren't even all that long... 7-9 miles... I just don't get it.  I haven't really had huge issues in the past doing these and longer distances... I carry a camelbak around my waist with a water bottle in it-not even the 24 oz. water sack... my eating hasn't really changed... my normal "schedule" hasn't changed... I just don't get the need for the stop several miles into the run...

any thoughts?

What/how much are you eating/drinking before and during these runs?

eating and drinking?  the usual I guess...

Today I ran a little sooner after lunch than I would have liked... today I had a chicken caesar wrap at the hospital cafeteria... I drank a gatorade and had some baked lays with it...

I had granola for breakfast with a cup of coffee... about 20 oz all told... I am cutting down.

But I ummm... made a pre-run pit stop to try and head off this issue (get it... "issue" ahead of time...

I often run afternoons or evenings because when I had run early in the morning last year, I was having this problem as I am fairly regular with the early morning time.

I am recovering from a bad cold, but none of those symptoms has been intestinal and none of the other times have I had any illness at all.

I haven't added anything new to my diet, nor taken anything away... no new supplements...

dunno.

Is it only during/after longer runs?

Are you running faster?  I find that running faster, and also running longer, can have these effects.  I found a good solution while training for a marathon -- take an Imodium the night before the long run.  Helped me greatly.  And since its just once a week, it doesn't really throw off my body off its "normal schedule" too much.

It has usually been on longer runs... well anything over say 6 miles... I can do anything around six miles and no problem.

Of course when I go longer than six I usually strap on my camelbak... I don't know if that is aggravating the situation or what... but I have run long distances with my camelback on  and had no problems.

BUt today... I wasn't much over two miles when I had this problem.... cramping, pressure... pow.  Last Monday night,, it was four miles into it when I needed to go... thankfully there was a gas station there.

And I really don't want to start taking Immodium before every long run...

Has something changed in your diet or are you now running at a different time.

When I started running in the morning recently, I was having to stop the runs short.  My normal schedule is about 9am, but the running accellerated that.  I have to make sure that i go to the pot before my run.  At night, it is not an issue.

You might consider having a 'scope done to at least take some more serious issues off the list of potentials.

I actually just has a scope down in March (I think)... and it showed nothing.

I am glad for the thoughts folks... I just don't know... it might just be me not feeling well... or something... and such.

Are you eating a lot of fiber before your long runs? Too much fiber before a hard workout can cause GI problems. If I eat fiber the day before a long workout, I have trouble very similar to yours. Avoid fiber at least 24 hours before your long runs and see if that helps.

You mentioned Gatorade with lunch.  What are you drinking during the run?

A lot of people seem to have problems with Gatorade, especially as the efforts get longer.  I'm one of them.

There is a huge (47 page) thread regarding this issue on the Cool Runnings board.  It is in the "Med Tent" area and called "Colon Issues - Sorry".  Please note, however, that on that board, I am the brown_dog_us.  DH does not suffer from runners trots, lucky guy.

Many, many people have this issue on the run.  The solution seems to be very individualized but the immodium really helps me (1 night before and 1 morning of long run).  However, you will need to experiment with the amount of this kind of medicine because you'll want to take the very least amount that will work for you.

I feel for you. I was in the same boat, and actually went 'the next step' and poo'ed in my shorts.

What I found worked for me was to eliminate almost all fat and fiber 2 days before a long run.

I also used heavily watered down gatorade during the run itself.

My usual breakfast before my long run is a large banana, 3-4 pieces of white bread toast(NO butter!), and some cream of wheat with non-fat milk.

After the run it takes my gut several hours to again accept food-this past Sunday I had some chicken and fries an hour after the run and my tummy through a fit.

Good luck!!

This is a main suspect of mine... I have been hitting the fiber hard, I think...  granola bars, clif bars, etc. The night before it wasn't too bad... although i did have a hamburger for dinner the night before and i don't eat a great deal of beef... but I had already gone twice that day... so I dunno.

I was drinking water on the run.  Nothing else... I was only going out for 7-9 miles depending on the pace I could maintain and the time I needed to be back.

oh well.... I will be doing three or four miles tomorrow.  We'll see if there is any problems there.

Thanks all.

no.. I was using a water bottle.  I wasn't using the bladder that the camel bak came with.. I just used the pouch, so I could carry keys, cell phone, shot blocks and a couple dollars along with the water.

And when I clean the camel bak I use the cleaning tablets for it...

I have been having the exact same problem and it is like clock work.  I leave my house and run to a little park about 2 miles away.  I usually having the feeling that the troop movement is beginning so I sit on the pot for a while but nothing.  I leave the house and pretty much at 1 mile my stomach hurts.  A little while later I am just hoping to make it to the bathroom right up the road.  I run inside, fight the battle, and continue my run.  Does not matter the time of day or what I eat.  I suspect it has something to do with the pounding of running.  It just take 8 or 9 minutes to push everything down.

I have the same problem too. Usually happens after 15 minutes of running or so. It doesn't happen in races because I can usually go to the bathroom before the race.
