speed limit on bike trails?

 Minneapolis, MN |  Subject: speed limit on bike trails?yesterday, as i was leaving the greenway to head north on the cedar lake trail, another biker going the other direction yelled at me to watch out for the radar. I had no idea what he was talking about. then right after i went over the hill and stopped at the stop sign at the bottom, i saw a car ahead parked off to the side of the trail. SO i approached very slowly and said "hi" to the police officer the was standing next to a tree with a radar gun. I should have stopped and asked if there is a speed limit? But i did not. I know the trails around the lakes have speed limits posted on the pavement. I have never seen anything indicating a speed limit on pavement or signs, once you are away from the lakes. So is there a speed limit? I know if there is, it is not enforced much, but just curious. |

In fact, a few years ago someone had painted a speed limit sign on the N Cedar Lake trail (near the bridge on the north side of Cedar Lake) and it was immediately covered, because there isn't a speed limit there and there was an uproar. Do you mean the Kenilworth trail? The one that is perpendicular to the Greenway and goes on the east side of the lake? I wonder if that small segment has a limit. There aren't any signs that I have ever noticed, so it's hard to enforce I'd think. Shoot, too bad you didn't ask him. |

He could be busy all day giving out tickets to biker not stopping at the stop signs, so it mystifies me about the speed thing. Then what, does he run after you and yell? |

That's pretty slow  I really wish they'd spend more time policing the stop signs... I have seen cops on bikes on that section of trail before, too. Are they "real" cops? I see 10mph painted on the pavement of some of the narrower trails (like along Wirth Pkwy) but not on most bigger ones (like the main parts of the Cedar Lake or Luce Line trails.) And I'm not sure exactly the place you're referring to. I guess I need to be more careful...I confess I'm not too good at watching my speed even on the marked trails. |

Veteran 334 Tacoma, Washington | Subject: RE: speed limit on bike trails? I stopped a bike cop on the Cedar Regional Trail today and she said that there were no speed limits on the Greenway or Cedar Trails and that they only use radar guns to enforce people stopping at red lights. There ya go.  |

I may be the odd one out here, but living near the Dakota trail and seeing the traffic and age groups that use it constantly, I would be all for a speed limit (as mentioned, there currently is no speed limit). I have seen several nasty accidents and something bad is going to happen. Not sure why groups need to ride that trail in a pace line at 20+ MPH at 11:00a on a saturday? we have plenty of GREAT roads around Lake Minnetonka to ride. Maybe a speed limit on weekends from 9a-7p and weeknights? There needs to be something there... |

Yeah, especially during peak times! I rode it once but haven't been back because of that. Expert 743 Minnesota | Subject: RE: speed limit on bike trails? The bike trails are for recreational riding. My belief is that it is too dangerous to be traveling at the speeds we generally train at. Two of the three riders killed in my area in the last ten years were hit by cars while crossing roads on the Heartland trail. They were out riding and elevated speeds and either ignored the crossing or were going so fast that they didn't have the ability to stop. |
