Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This is a mini-rant. I stood in 18 degree weather outside a major grocery store yesterday ringing the bell for Salvation Army. I am not complaining about that because this is my 4th year to volunteer. What both amuses me and irritates me is when people will walk by and pretend that they don't see me standing there. For pete's sake! I'm standing in front of the door with a freakin' bell in my hand! Don't pretend that you don't see me! Most people will give their pocket change. A few will give larger bills. And others will just walk by and nod or smile. That's okay. I know you may not want to give. But don't pretend like you don't see me!! Geez! OK. Rant over. And BTW, please acknowledge the Salvation Army bell ringers this season! It's a great charity. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() First of all God Bless You. Second, I can feel your pain, we were collecting donations for MD, Jerry's kids and I had a guy give me a handful of cigarette butts and a guy who asked what was it for and then said no way in hell. I just said hope you never get MD buddy. That's the way it is. I can say that the positive comments were nice though. So Bettylou keep on ringing. Remember the people you are helping. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I too say God bless you and thank you for your time and effort. I had to stop by a (enter name of large dept store here) Thursday to get an umbrella and a poncho.(as you can guess it was raining very hard). There in the rain was a man ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. How can you NOT give? I hope you raise lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Edited by gullahcracker 2005-12-11 1:28 PM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This time if year I try to keep a little change in my pocket, even if it is just a few pennies, just for this reason. I always remember my Grandma giving me a few quarters and telling me to go wish the lady with the bell a Merry Christmas because she helps people. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() courtney_leone - 2005-12-11 5:31 PM Good for you! I'm glad someone is ringing that bell somewhere because they aren't ringing it here. I stopped by Target this morning with my mom after church and as we were walking out I realized how quiet it was. Target's excuse for not allowing the Salvation Army to solicit is that if they allowed the SA to be there, they'd have to allow EVERYONE else as well. This is the first year I haven't seen anyone. I haven't seen anyone anywhere! It makes me sad. That's a bunch of bull. It would look good if they made a donation to SA then if they won't allow them. I am sure it would be a tax write off. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() in defense of the people who "pretend like they don't see you," i will admit that i am guilty of this. i'm, not trying to pretend that i don't see you. believe me, i know you are there. i think its great that you are there. however, if i make eye contact with you when i am walking into the store, and i don't put anything in your bucket, i feel guilty. i know that sounds silly. i'm not scrooge, i give to the charities of my own choice (for me personally, the salvation army is not one of them), but my own conscience sends me on a guilt trip if i can't put something in your bucket after looking you in the eye and smiling (or not). i feel the same way if i walk past the girls scouts selling cookies or a little league team trying to raise money. in all honesty 98% of the time i don't have any cash on me (coins or otherwise) because i use my atm card to buy everything. getting back on track, i think that a lot of people "ignore" you for the same reason that i do... they feel bad not being able to give to everyone, especially during the holidays. call me crazy. Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 3558: The next time you pass someone ringing the bell for Salvation Army, or a Girl Scout, or someone collecting for MD, or whatever, just smile and nod. You don't have to give. That's your perogative and I don't think you should be judged by that. I was just irritated and amused when people tried to pretend like they didn't see me. I'd see them walking across the parking lot and as they got closer to the door, all of a sudden they'd get interested in their shoes or some object off in the distance. It was almost comical. However, just for the record, the Salvation Army is an excellent charity that manages to keep a low overhead while helping so many people. |

Ditto me! We have a SA donation center at our local grocery store that I give to a lot (clothes, and toys) all year long. I drop money in the bucket when I have it, but I am a cashless person. I use my debit card for everything and I rarely have cash on me. I have made a more conscious effort to say Merry Christmas or God Bless instead of looking at the ceiling. I know if it were me, I wouldn't think twice about someone walking past me ringing the bell and not donating, so I try to thing the person volunteering feels the same way. BettyLou, God bless you for volunteering your time!! You are doing a great thing to help! |

Giver![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just to clarify, Target's not boycotting the SA (at least specicfically). They simply have a no solicitation policy that applies to everyone...SA, Girl Scouts, etc.

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Y'know, I usually try and at least smile at the bell ringers, I don't think I intentionally ignore them, and I guess I am happy that there are people out there selflessly ringing in all kinds of weather blah blah blah, and word has it the SA does great things (except for gay people, and usually NOT unconditionally) but that ringing gets old. It is entirely possible to walk into 7 stores in a day of (agressive!) shopping and from the car to the inside of the store, that bell rings. It's loud. It drives me crazy. So yeah, ignoring someone standing in front of you might be perceived as rude. but it is also a better alternative to the rage I sometimes feel upon being rung at constantly by an organization that has repeatedly dissed me, and my people, in God;s name. And I think it would be hard to be a non-Christian person trying to just get errands done and constantly have the SA there. But I appear to be the only grump on this topic, and I recognize that I am heavily influenced by the SA's relationship with the anti-gay movement, so I'll sit back now and be yelled at oh yeah, here's a press release on target/SA http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn.nsf/vw-news/A2C8D799DEE... |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jumping to a different Salvation Army topic, the guy in front of SAM's Club ringing the bell Saturday had his bagpipes with him. And for a few minutes, instead of ringing the bell, he blessed us with Silent Night. So awesome. I understand the frustration, especially when there was somebody outside the grocery store before Thanksgiving. That's jumping the gun. But now I'll be more likely to smile instead of rushing by. Thanks, bettylou. |

![]() | ![]() I appreciate the SA campaign during the holiday season, and I aways give to it, multiple times. On the flip side, I do agree with others here in that it gets hard to tolerate, and I do feel guilty when I don't give every time I go into the store. But that's my problem, and when I'm out and about at Christmastime, there are so many crankypants out there, I make it a point to be polite and spread holiday cheer. Sometimes tho, I'm so focused on what I'm doing and getting down the to-do list, I pay no attention to the (insert charity here), and I would hope that the person working for that charity doesn't take it personally. I know these nonprofits have to get money to function and to give back into the community in order to fulfil their purpose, but there has to be a better way- especially with so many people being "cashless" now. I'm bombarded at every store, in my mail, on the phone and now even at stoplights to give to this campaign or that campaign. I feel like I am being manipulated by some of these organizations to guilt me into giving. So aside from SA, I don't give on the spot-it's personal policy. I seek out other ways to donate to the organizations I wish to support so I don't have to wait for them to knock on my car window. |
