And yesterday i saw you kissing tiny flowers,
But all that lives is born to die.
And so i say to you that nothing really matters,
And all you do is stand and cry.

led zeppelin- "that's the way"

easily one of the saddest lines of any song i know.  this is a cool thread...i'm a huge music lover!

I like the bit from this tune, hence my sig line;

Wond'ring aloud, how we feel today.
Last night sipped the sunset, my hands in her hair.
We are our own saviours, as we start
Both our hearts beating life into each other.

Wond'ring aloud, will the years treat us well?
As she floats in the kitchen, I'm tasting the smell
Of toast as the butter runs. Then she comes,
Spilling crumbs on the bed, and I shake my head.
And it's only the giving that makes you what you are.

from "Wond'ring Aloud" by Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)

Meatloaf: Paradise by the Dashboard Light

Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
'Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed

OK, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker going here,
Two down, nobody on, no score, bottom of the ninth,
There's the windup, and there it is, a line shot up the middle,
Look at him go. This boy can really fly! He's rounding first and really
turning it on now, he's not letting up at all, he's gonna try for
second; the ball is bobbled out in center, and here comes the
throw, and what a throw! He's gonna slide in head first, here he
comes, he's out! No, wait, safe-safe at second base, this kid
really makes things happen out there. Batter steps up to the
plate, here's the pitch-he's going, and what a jump he's got,
he's trying for third, here's the throw, it's in the dirt-safe at
third! Holy cow, stolen base! He's taking a pretty big lead out
there, almost daring him to try and pick him off. The pitcher
glances over, winds up, and it's bunted, bunted down the third
base line, the suicide squeeze is on! Here he comes, squeeze
play, it's gonna be close, holy cow, I think he's gonna make it!

Mama, I'm still thuggin, the world is a war zone
My homies is inmates, and most of them dead wrong
Full grown, finally a man, just scheamin on ways
to put some green inside the palms of my empty hands
Just picture me rollin
Flossin a Benz on rims that isn't stolen
My dreams is censored, my hopes are gone
I'm like a fiend that finally sees when all the dope is gone
My nerves is wrecked, heart beatin and my hands is swollen
thinkin of the G's I'll be holdin, picture me rollin

Oh good! I get to talk about the most talented songwriter ever!

Nothing fuels a good flirtation like need and anger and desperation.  -Aimee Mann, "The Moth"

Or how about:

And I know life is getting shorter

I can't bring myself to set the scene

Even when it's approaching torture

I've got my routine

That's from "Momentum" from the Magnolia soundtrack.

Or:

Now that I've met you
would you object to
never seeing each other again
cause I can't afford to
climb aboard you
no one's got that much ego to spend

From "Deathly" off of Bachelor No. 2 (also on the Magonlia ST).

Aimee's amazing and impossibly underated. I urge anyone to go immediately to www.aimeemann.com. Besides being a heck of a musician, she's a pretty cool story, too. After geting screwed by Big Record Companies while with 'Til Tuesday, she started her own publishing company (Alter Ego Records, and now produces and markets her own records. I like her a little...

I was down at the New Amsterdam starin' at this yellow-haired girl,
Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation with a black-haired flamenco dancer.
You know, she dances while his father plays guitar.
She's suddenly beautiful.
And we all want something beautiful.
Man, I wish I was beautiful...
So come dance the silence down through the mornin'.

Counting Crows, Mr. Jones

Ah, Tull..."Wond'ring Aloud" is a great song. Everything off of Aqualung is great. In fact I'm going to quit listening to Tool and go listen to Tull now.

Let's see. I've always liked
"I've got wild, staring eyes / and I got a strong urge to fy / but I've got nowhere to fly to" (Pink Floyd, Nobody Home, The Wall)

"I feel my body weakened by the years
As people turn to gods of cruel design
Is it that they fear the pain of death
Or could it be they fear the joy of life
Pray your gods who rule you by your fear
For they are quick and ruthless punishers" (Toad the Wet Sprocket, Pray Your Gods, Fear)

"Fred sits alone at his desk in the dark
There's an awkward young shadow that waits in the hall
He's cleared all his things and he's put them in boxes
Things that remind him: 'Life has been good'" (Ben Folds, Fred Jones Pt 2, Rockin' The Suburbs)

Clearly, I could go on and on.

Anyone else have a daughter???

...Stickin' little white flowers all up in her hair.
"Walk beside the pony
daddy, it's my first ride."
"I know the cake looks funny,
daddy, but I sure tried."
Oh, with all that I've done wrong,
I must have done something right
To deserve a hug every morning,
And butterfly kisses at night.

Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this

Oh, take your time... Don't live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
