Wanted to get some discussion going on the Augusta 70.3.  I did this race last year and plan on doing it again this year.  This was a great race all around.  Organization, race course, accomodations all great.  The river swim with the current was nice for a slow swimmer like myself.  Looking foward to doing this race.

I have heard good things about Whitelake.  My daughters friend did the HIM at Whitelake this year. I may have to look at doing that race in the future.   Good luck with your trainning.

AugustaTiger - 2011-05-21 1:49 PM This will be my first Tri. Just completed the second week of the 20 week training.

Brave of you to attempt a HIM on the first Tri.  The best advice outside of the training that you are doing is to nail down your nutrition.  You have to know how to consume calories on the bike and run so you don't run out of gas at the end.  Even if you do a really good job on your training for this 1st tri you can loose it if you don't have a solid nutrition plan that you have nailed down befor this race.  My first HIM I felt good about my fitness and training but did a terrible job as I look back at my nutrition.  Did HIM Disney last week.  I was not as fit as the previous year but I shaved 52 minutes off my time because I used the experince I got from doing another HIM(Augusta) and a Full IM(B2B) to improve my nutrition.  Keep that in mind as you do your training work on that as part of the 4th discipline for the race.

Hey everyone.  Really enjoyed this race last year and looking forward it again.  Just tried Marriott on 10th and they are completely sold out.  Does anyone have a good hotel recommendation nearby race site.  Stayed near Stevens Creek last year and looking for something closer.  Thanks.

for those of you doing this race for the first time above is a link to a film of the entire bike course.  It was done last year and will let you see the entire course with comments from the person who filmed it.

This will be my 3rd Augusta70.3 (I have done everyone so far).  I am a marathoner at heart (have run a marathon in all 50 states 2 times) but I wanted to branch out my training so I took up tris in '09.  I highly recommend doing a sprint or two before the HIM.  Nothing beats hands-on experience for transitions, nutrition, etc.  One of those "ah ha" moments.

There are lots of tris these days but a fun one is the Tri in the Park series.  It is well run plus they are in interesting locations.  Just my 2 cents . . . Good luck to everyone!

For all of you that picked this for your first HIM you made a smart decision.  The swim with your wetsuit will feel like your floating down the river.  The bike course(check the link a few posts ago) is great no major hills just rollers.  The run is a two loop course through downtown.  Last year for those that did it remember the police officer at the corner who sounded like a drill instructor?  He was great.  I laughed seeing all the people who were walking then started to run when he could see them!  Great Race.  You will enjoy this as your first HIM!

You will be pleasantly surprised- this course is faster than White Lake, if you can believe that.

Every course is fast for Runnergirl.  Truth is, she is right on.  Easy swim with wetsuit and current, only 1300 ft of climbing on the bike and run is super fast flat with nice snake patter through downtown 2x with spectators, some local, some not so local.

Everyone is different when it comes to nutrition. What works for some doesn't work for others and then there is always the flavor to factor in. But it's definitely something you want to work out before race day.

I have good luck with PowerBar stuff and use their Ironman Perform drink when I ride and run since it will actually be handed out on the course and my body will be use to it already. I loke the flavors, others don't but the nice part is it has less sugar than Gatoraide.

I also utilize their gels, energy blasts, energy bites, and triple energy bars. I have a very sensitive digestive system and am prone to ulcers but for some reason I have no problem with the PowerBar products. They are also working hard on their flavors and are even coming out with new gel flavors. One of them is Mango and is pretty good!

I have heard that a general rule of thumb is that you want to get calories in you every 45 min or so. My boyfriend is my coach and works with me on my nutrition and when I should take things. If I get nauseous or don't feel like it did well we try something else.

There is a nutrition forum on here with tons of questions and answers about nutrition since it is such an important part. Also there are some reviews of stuff in the Gear Reviews section.

Are they switching to the Ironman drink this year? Last 2 years it was gatorade endurance

Hey all - this will be my first HIM and I was wondering if anyone could provide insight on the use of wet suits.  I understand the USAT rules but I've only done sprints in the summer so a wet suit was never necessary.  Do people opt out of the wet suit?  Are there any advantages other than buoyancy?
