That subject says it all. I'm not sure if I'm feeling confident about my ability to go from the couch to sprint of if I've just completely lost my mind.

I'm 35 and what the docs refer to as morbidly obese. I have a friend who did a triathlon last year and has talked me into doing it with her in June in Naperville, IL. So, I've got the couch to sprint training program that I'm planning on starting next week. I signed up for a mentor. Now I just have to get a swimsuit. That one's going to take a lot of courage

You'll be fine!!! There are folks of all sizes at tris. That's what's so great about this sport. AND everyone is so encouraging. And trust me, we are all worried about how we look- so much so that not much attention gets places on what others are wearing or doing. So get that suit and get cracking! A friend of mine feels more comfortable with her tri shorts on top of her swim suit. More coverage. You might want to try that if you are feeling too exposed.

Once you get going you won't be in the Morbidly Obese category long. And I've got to warn you- this sport is addictive. I basically traded my food addiction to training and racing addiction. (a good swap I think).

Good luck to you!!!

You will be fine, just approach your training smartly and conservatively.  I wouldn't do any running for several months-though doing some walking should be ok.  Focus on low-impact stuff like the bike and swim, go from 2x per week each to 3x per week each.  They will be great for weightloss too.

Good for you!!!

Before you know it you'll be shopping for a new (smaller) wardrobe   There are some pretty amazing stories on BT of what people have accomplished -- very inspiring!

You were probably thinking, “yeah, I’m nuts enough to do that!”  And indeed you are.  Many of us have come from backgrounds of overweight and undertrained.

If you haven’t visited the Athena/Clydesdale Forum and seen this, take a look and I hope you are both inspired and that some of your reservations are dismissed.

Happy Training and welcome to BT.

Edit: If you use the training log, then when you have questions it will be easier for the masses to take a peek and give intelligent reasonable input.

Every triathlete is at least a little bit nuts.  So welcome to the asylum!

You've already taken the biggest step.  Just saying to yourself, "I'm going to do a triathlon" takes a lot of guts (and the the aforementioned being a bit crazy).  I have no doubt you'll finish that tri.  From your post in Fleebs group, you sound totally motivated.  And when the training gets hard, and your feeling low, turn your mentor group or anyone on this site.  In fact, a guy in our group just doubled his longest swim after one month of working on it.  Just seeing that in his training log was the kick in the pants I needed to shed the holiday blahs and get back out there.

We all want you cross the finish line, and we all know you will.  Just remember to have somebody take a pic of it, so we can high five you through the internet.

All the best!

well all of us crazy people want more crazy people joining us.. the whole numbers game if there are enough of us we must be normal..

I think everyone has that "what did I get myself into"  I've stared at the computer screen looking at the register button thinking "oh crap what did I just do!!"

Like someone said go easy on the impact stuff, like running if your not used to it.  Just do a little each day and don't get down on your self when you have a bad day.. it happens to everyone.

Start slow, and you'll be up to the sprint tri in no time.

In the past year, at age 41, I went from an obese couch potato to getting ready for my first marathon. Within the next 10 months, I expect to do my first IM.

The first several weeks are tough.

Start a run/walk program to get use to the running. I started with 2 minutes run, 5 minutes walk for 25 minutes during lunch. Every week or so, you take a minute from the walk and put it to the run, so after 3 weeks you're up to 5 minutes run and 2 minutes walk. Before you even know it, you're doing 3 miles without stopping.

I found that spinning class is helpful for me, even though I had done a lot of biking in college. It's a nice, controlled way to get started, without dealing with road issues, or cold Illinois winters (I grew up in Champaign)

Swimming is tough, but a mentor should help. A few lessons to start out with is never a bad idea. I dropped out of my first tri last year, because I couldn't swim 400 yards. But after joining with the local YMCA tri club, I'm able to do 1500m without stopping. Not fast, but at least I get there.

And, yes, I was trying to spell triathlon with two a's for months

Welcome to the asylum. It's not a bad place to be.

Where are you in Chi Burbs?

My first Tri was last year in Lake in the Hills.

Advice. Start Slow and respect the distance.

Hi Kappie,

You're amazing to commit to taking the challenge. You'll be astounded at the buzz that training gives you, and the incredible support and friendship people on this site can offer. It's amazing.

Be bold and approach your training with confidence and care, and you'll be great! Wave to me down here in New Zealand when you are training!

Good luck, and keep us all informed!

Jacqui

I'm in Bartlett.

I'm actually following a couch to sprint training schedule and it is starting slow. I (safely) pushed the limits a bit today and did something I have never done before. I actually jogged on a treadmill for 30-45 second bursts every 5 minutes! I almost hate to say it but it was exhilarating! Could it be that I'm going to become a running junkie one day? Gasp at the thought!

A strange thing is happening to me. At work, I've become the person trying to motivate everyone to get some kind of physical activity in every day. Me! The person who has been overweight all of her life!

I created a 'fit club' to try and motivate people to do some kind of physical activity during the day. I'm not focusing on weight loss, just activity. The club results in the person who works out the most during the month winning the money collected from each person at the beginning of the month. My goal is to win this money every month because these triathlon costs are starting to add up!

I also started a kind of fruit co-op at work. People give me money and I go buy fruit and keep it at my desk. Then anytime they get snacky, they can come to my desk and eat some fruit instead of going to raid the vending machine.

I'll be interested to see how they both turn out.

Has anyone ever tried anything like this at the office?

Those sound like some great ideas. Anything to get and stay motivated I run with one of my employees. We kind of egg each other on to make sure that we aren't slacking off at lunch time.

P.S. Is snacky a word? I thought it was snackage... as in "I want snackage!!!!"

Actually. they're both correct. Snacky is an adjective and snackage is a noun.
