I have had a great summer of training and finished 3 Tris, but now that the season is winding down what do I do to stay in shape?  How do you tri train in the winter in Michigan?  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Last year was my first year in the midwest, and it was pretty tough. I ran a lot, because you can do that in the winter, if you're careful. Make sure you get a nice trainer and a subscription to netflix, because that's the only way to ride your bike. You can train all winter, if you really put your mind to it, but it is NOT easy. Goodluck and just remember- you're doing this for FUN!

Everyone is also invited to use our Computrainers during the winter. We had some good groups of local BT'ers in here on Saturdays riding. Big fun! Well, just like fun, but different...

Kind of figured a trainer was the only way to go.  I am close to a pool, so I can get a swim in when I can get in the pool, but the biking and running is going to be a challenge.  Thanks

My past winters have been drinking and eating, not the best choice.  Now that I have discovered this fun, I am getting a membership to the local Rec center, that has a nice pool.  They even have a slide and play area for teh kid and wife. On colder days I have a nice treadmill, on with the ipod and run the day's stress away.

I started today looking at warmer clothes for the bike and trainers.  I am finding the trainers a little confussing on what I need or don't need.

I finally got a decent indoor trainer and love it, but second the Netflix idea.  Too many commercials on regular TV.  And about 75 minutes in, I'm about ready to lose my mind inside.

Running I don't mind doing through the winter and got those nifty things you can strap on to the bottom of your shoes as an aid when it's a bit icy out.  Definitely made a difference, to me anyway.

Haven't hooked up with them yet, but there's a group that swims Saturday mornings at Schoolcraft College.  It's $5 and then there's a food fest afterwards (so I'm told).  Runnergirl knows more about that than I do, but I'm gonna try to add that to my schedule as well.

Maybe I'm nuts, but I like running in the winter.  Maybe moreso than the summer.  I'm not crazy about running in the dark though.  I much prefer the daylight.

Swimming is great in the winter.  Its when you have to chop lanes in the ice, that sucks.

I LOVE running in the winter and hate it in the summer. I over heat easy so the cold des not bother me. I wear shorts and a tank top down to about 35* under that I'll bust out the UA cold gear. Did many 10+ mile runs last witer with temps below 15*F. LOVE it.....

Bought the wife a trainer last year but she did not use it much, Getting me one this year so we can do it together, may make it better.

I just thought of something funny.  How a tandem on a trainer?

I know this is obvious, but be extra careful when running in the winter. I fell and busted my knee 6 days before my marathon in the spring, and it sucked as$.

Oh, and to quote some hardcore midwesterners- "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes." One of my longest runs last winter was at temps far below zero, and I survived just fine

Yeah, winter training in MI can be "interesting." I'd recommend trying to do at least a couple of your trainer rides per week with a group. Much more motivating and far less mind numbing than grinding it out by yourself in the basement.....I did way too much of the latter training for IMCDA last winter. With the miserable spring we had here on the lakeshore, I ended up doing three 5+ hour trainer rides...ACK!!!

I'm also a big fan of winter runs. I only ended up on the treadmill for two runs last winter and that was because of ice. We are lucky over on this side in that there are a number of routes that don't get too much traffic (especially during the pre-dawn hours during which I do most of my training....). Obvious, but please be VERY careful when running in slippery conditions with traffic around. A lot of folks swear by Yak-Traks.

I don't mind the winter training at all. I love movies but never make time for them when its nice out so come winter I can catch up on what I missed all year. Amazing how quick a ride can go by when watching a good flik.

Also if you can afford or have access to, a computrainer is the duke. Makes trainer life so much nicer. And if IM training, the Real Course Videos are incredible.

With Kahtoola microspikes, snowshoes, and a mountain bike, you can train outside all winter long

Yeah, fat tire is also an option in the winter.  We are going to dust off the old Mt. Bikes and put them to use over the winter.

I'm sure I will get criticized a ton for this but I ride in spinning classes at my local YMCA 2 times a week then I only need to be on the trainer 1-2 times. Ya, there are a thousand ways to say spinning classes don't work or are the cycling equivalent of "jogging" but THEY WORK. I feel like I can keep somewhat in shape using them and they are far less boring than a living room trainer ride.

If you run in really cold weather a old pair of underwear with a duct tape liner is worth millions.
