Subject: Fast easy on-the-go breakfasts?
Pretty self-explanatory:  I'm trying to think of fast, easy, on-the-go breakfasts!  I work five days a week, and my work starts at either 5:30am or 8:00am.  I bike there (not far, less than ten minutes) every morning and already have a lot of difficulty waking up that early to go to work, let alone waking up even earlier to make myself a huge meal!  Usually when I get to work (I work at a licensed Starbucks inside a Vons grocery store), I'll buy a Larabar and make a cup of black coffee.  Not unhealthy, but pretty inadequate, and I end up feeling hungry in another hour 1/2.

I was hoping some of you who might be in similar situations would have any ideas about healthy breakfasts, preferably balanced in carbs and protein, that are really fast to make in the morning, or something that will be good made the night before and refrigerated overnight...?

Do you have access to a microwave and/or a toaster at work? Why not some oatmeal or piece of whole grain toast spread with peanut butter? There's always fruit - a banana or apple with some peanut butter would be a nice balance of carbs & protein.

Toast up a bagel, spread some peanut butter on it, put the bagel "back together" and wrap it in a paper towel or foil to bring to work with you. I do this every day

There are lots of "easy and fast" foods for breakfast that require very little preparation. Let's see......

Fruit (bananas, grapes, oranges, apples, nectarines, berries, you get the idea)
Yogurt - greek yogurt has a lot of protein in it, may keep you fuller for longer
Oatmeal - add dried fruit, berries, peanut butter, honey, flax seed, etc.
Granola/granola bars
Toast/bagel w/ peanut butter
Whole grain cereal/skim or soy milk
Frozen waffle w/ peanut butter
Pre-made smoothies - Naked or Odwalla brands are popular
Applesauce

This goes against my personal beliefs/preferences, but I have seen many a-brand of pre-cooked turkey bacon or sausage in the refrigerated section. You just pop it in the microwave for a few seconds to heat it up. There are also soy and "fake meat" alternatives like this for protein.

Amy's makes an organic, frozen breakfast burrito and a scramble wrap that looks yummy.

Just wanted to add that I find it interesting that you work at a grocery store but are asking us for suggestions!

Lol, you would be surprised.  But ask anyone at a grocery store, we all have the same problem!  Maybe it's too many options.  I'll go on my lunch break and think to myself, "ugh, there's no good food in here!"

I use my muffin pan to make my little portion sized breakfasts.  Last week I made a bunch of ittle quiche's and threw them in ziplocks for when I got to work.  This week it has been french toast.  I used bread that was about to go bad and cut it up into cubes, mixed it in with the egg mixture and baked it up.  They have held their form and flavor all week.

Lots of way to experiement with that though.

Something that I've been doing lately is making pancakes (multi grain powder with 2 scoops vanilla protein powder).  I make a whole batch, let them cool off and put them in a zip lock bag then freeze them.  If you don't let them cool off the condensation causes freezer burn.  They pull apart easily without breaking if you let them cool off before putting them in the freezer also.  But it only takes 30-40 seconds in the microwave to warm them.  Top them off with anything... blueberries, peanut butter, honey, peaches - whatever you want.  You can cut up a banana or any fruit in the time the pancakes are in the microwave and BAM - you've got a healthy breakfast with some quality fruits and protein.  Add some variety to the pancake mix each week and you wont get bored as fast, throw in a some chunks of dark chocolate.

I'll also boil eggs at the start of the week and then I'll have an egg with my breakfast or a snack mid day.  I personally take the shell off after I boil them and put them in a zip lock bag in the fridge.

You could eat some cottage cheese, mix protein shakes the nght before...

If you take the time early in the week to preplan your meals and then cook in bulk, most foods can be frozen or put in the fridge for a few days.  Then you may be able to sneak in a 20 minute workout in place of the time you'd otherwise spend cooking.

Have fun, I look forward to other people's ideas too!

x2. When I was losing 50 pounds, I used a tracking software that showed me when I was eating carbs, proteins, fats, etc. I noticed that I was eating a high-carb breakfast (cereal), then protein and fat later in the day. That made no sense - fast energy when I was going to be up and about all day, then long-burning energy when I needed a boost before bed? So I reversed them, and a PB&B on 15-grain bread became my staple. I went from being STARVING at 10 am after a 7:30 breakfast to having to remind myself that I really should eat lunch before 2 pm.

As for things to grab at the store for lunch, do you have sushi/california rolls in your deli? I know lots of stores do these days. Seriously, a tray of california rolls is like God's gift to us (well, after good beer, anyway) - low cals in general, zero sat fat, high protein, good mix of carbs, protein, and healthy fats, super tasty, lots of combos to keep it interesting - and cheap and fast!

Hard boiled eggs are a nearly perfect food. Have a couple with some fruit and oatmeal. Breakfast should be your biggest meal of the day.

I couldn't work in a Starbucks. I'd drink black coffee by the gallon, I would have absoultely no opinion whatsoever on any of the fluffy drinks, and I'd have a blank stare for any dude who orders any drink with more than one descriptive term in it's name.  Sorry for the hijack...

One of my favorite things right now is overnight oats/muesli.  I can't even think about warm oats in the humidity of NC but I love how filling they are so the night before I add 1/2 cup oats with 1/2 cup milk, a tablespoon or so of oat bran and ground flax, some slivered almonds, golden raisins and some agave or brown sugar if I want some sweetness.  Mix it up and put it in tupperware overnight.  In the morning add some berries or a sliced banana and maybe a dollop of greek yogurt or nut butter for some protein and you are good to go.  I love it and it keeps me full for hours.  I have also mixed the oats with yogurt and a touch of milk for a thicker consistancy, just play around with it.

Haha, I love the fluff.  That's my biggest obstacle to overcome in terms of nutrition.

My boyfriend loves hard boiled eggs but I can't bring myself to eat them because of the fart smell.  Everyone says they're so good so maybe I should get them a try...

If they smell like farts they're probably over cooked.  Try placing in cool water, bringing to a boil, cover and remove from heat.  Let sit for 10 minutes then drain and rinse with cool water.

I have similar time issues -  30 minute ride to work - have to be there at 5:30 - no time for breakfast. I have 3 different breakfasts that work. First is a protein shake made the night before and put into the freezer. By the time I get to work, it's starting to melt just enough to start sipping. It works better if I remember to take it out of the freezer to start thawing the instant I get out of bed.

OK second is to put rolled oatmeal and chopped up nuts into a baggie. I usually add a scoop of vanilla protein powder and a little cinnamon for flavor. Some kind of fruit in another baggie and soy milk in a 1 cup container. The soy milk is optional - if I don't have any, then water will do in a pinch. Once again - I put it all together the night before into a plastic bag in the fridge so all I have to do in the morning is remember to grab the bag. The oatmeal only takes a little water in a bowl in the microwave.  If you don't have bowls at work, then I recommend putting everything into a plastic one with lid that you can use to cook in and eat out of.

Third one: same basic idea as the oatmeal, but with some kind of cold cereal instead.

The two cereal ones are a little high in carbs, but on days with multiple workouts, I gotta start out that way.

Sliced apple and cheese. I don't know why but slicing the apple makes my stomac think it is fuller.
Keep it simple.

Have you ever tried the Ensure brand drinks/shakes?  They are usually with the SlimFast and other meal-replacement type shakes in the stores.

I always try to keep some around the house, b/c I find they are great when I just don't have time to eat a proper breakfast or lunch.  I like them b/c I don't think they are technically "diet" shakes, so they do have a bit of real sugar rather than aspartime (sp?) and the other faux sweeteners out there that I find really gross.  They've got a good smattering of vitamins, a little fat, and some protein.  I think they are also higher in calories than the Slimfast and similar diet drinks too, which is nice for what you are looking for.

Oatmeal to go packs are great!  10 seconds in the microwave.  Pretty high in carbs but only 250 calories and pretty nutrient dense as well.

that and a piece of fruit and you should be good to go!

If you have time to pre-plan and pre-prepare your food, you can have just about anything.  My staple are breakfast burritos...

3 egg whites, 1 egg, 3oz chicken, 2 slices ff cheese wrapped in two flour tortillas.  Cook the eggs with a dash or two of tabasco - any type, and salt and pepper.  You can make ahead of time, put in little containers and nuke for a minute and half or so.  Add some salsa - yummy!  About 500 calories and provides a blend of carbs, protein and some fat.  You can always add more chicken or egg whites to bump up the calories and protein or drop some to lower the cal count.

These are easy and good and can be adjusted to tastes.
Breakfast in a Cup

3 cups cooked rice
1 cup (4 oz) shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese, or a blend
1 can (4 oz) diced green chiles, drained
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 t ground cumin
1/2 t salt
1/2 t ground black pepper

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat 12 muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray.
Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.
Divide mixture evenly into muffin cups.
Bake for 25-30 minutes (or more -- I like them crispy on top), or until set.
