Subject: Don't Do What I Did...

After over a million yards of swimming, and tens of thousands of flip turns, I FINALLY made the one mistake I feared.

I was swimming at a pool I don't normally frequent, and wasn't thinking when I approached my first turn.  I swam several feet past the end of the lane line to start my turn (something I have done thousands of times - at my OTHER pool..).

I was harshly reminded by the smashing my two heels on the concrete pool deck that THIS pool has lane lines that end much closer to the wall and I need to start my turn sooner...

Now it hurts just to walk around with seriously bruised heels (and ego) and all....

Ahhh - there is always something to learn.  In this instance, get familiar with your pool, or was it smashing one's heels on a concrete pool deck does not rank very high up on the list of pleasantries?

Haven't done this cuz I can't do flipturns, but sometimes I'm so focused on my stroke that I don't notice the lane line ended -- it hurts when you ram your head into the wall, too!

Same here.  Sometimes happens when I'm doing back stroke.

OUCH!

I don't pay attention to the T on the bottom of the pool for my flip turns. I always kind glance up to see where the wall is and flip based on that.

Ouch! I think everyone who does flipturns gets the mark of gee-I-can't-navigate at least once - happens sooner or later. Definitely doesn't make the bruises hurt any less to know everyone else has had them, too!

My former FIL (competitive collegiate swimmer, recreational master's swimmer) was once just lazing his way through some laps, waiting for his kids to be done or something. He decided to see what his sprinting chops were up to, and took off like a bat out of hell for an all-out 50. Flipped with a lot of momentum, caught his ankles, and there was blood spurting from the side. So much, in fact, that they had to shut down the pool. Nasty! He said he was essentially fine, but the teenaged, brand-new lifeguard flipped out until the senior guard took over!

Hope yours heal up fast, and you don't get TOO gun-shy about turns from now on!

Ouch!  I know how that feels.  During my first year swimming, I had that happen a couple times.

Ouch, I did that once or twice although not at great speed.  It still hurt.  Over the years I've hit my head a couple of times, smashed my hand, even have a scar on the top of my shoulder from being run into the wall.  These days I usually try to do a warm up first in a pool I don't know since the distance between the beginning of the solid colored lane lines or the flags always differs and I have less tolerance for healing time than I used to. Tongue out

I am really proud that I've just learned to flip turn, now I'm not so sure.  Thanks for the heads-up, I will keep this in mind as a new and previously unknown way to hurt myself.  Hope it gets better soon.

My advice to everyone is that the only reliable method to determine where the wall is, is to look at the wall.  Tongue out  Seriously, there are too many other variables to use anything else.  Lane ropes can shift, using the T can depend on how your head is angled and how fast you are moving, same goes for flags.  The wall is always right there staring back at you.

Agreed for freestyle you should not even know where the ropes are since your face should be in the water .. you should be using the T on the bottom and X on the wall to determine where you need to turn.

To practice starting at the backstroke flag (if no flags should be where the lane lines go solid color) just swim into the wall and gauge where you need to start your turn. Starting further out all the better since missing the wall is better than smashing your heels on the deck. Do this a bunch of times in a row you will eventually learn how to site where you need to be when you start rotating.

For backstroke yes you can use the flags and lane lines but you still need to adjust for each pool slightly as well as your stroke count for that day. But if you are working on freestyle flip turns then backstroke ones are probably not a concern.

Honestly I don't recall even learning how to do flip turns, I don't even recall learning how to swim I was so young so I know my experience is a bit different then anyone else but I haven't ever smashed my heels on the wall that I remember. If you are doing it right you should be twisting as you flip not just doing a straight up and down flip.

I SUCK at counting strokes and flipping when needed for the back stroke. The strokes always changed.

The WORST was at at swim meet... when I counted... did the front roll and then flip... yep, no wall. Had to swim on my back, underwater... backwards... to find the wall with my feet to push off to not be DQed. Yeah, I did not win that race.

All is well, but I wish I could wear flip flops to work today!  I have the shoes on extra loose.  The heels are a little tender!

Been there, done that.

The most embarrassing one I had was in a distance medley relay. Miscounted my lengths, and on my last touch, I instead flip turned and shot out from the wall to really pound that last 50, and had the other swimmer crash right on top of me.

Coach was NOT happy.
