I was riding with a group this weekend and we came upon what appeared to be a road killed ground hog, nothing unusual... Except this one had only been partially run over.  Just the back half of the poor lil guy had been hit and it was trying to drag itself out of the road.

I felt bad watching it struggle and knew its last moments were going to be miserable.  Rather that just ride by like everyone (which I do not judge as wrong) I stopped and intervened.

Most everyone in the group thought I was nuts and couldn't believe I would even care... so I'm wondering -

What say you?

Anyone else ever do such a thing?

Yeah a rock seemed to be the most effective solution available.  I moved both out of the road after.

You did the humane thing. Poor little animal. I personally would not have been able to do it. But you did the right thing for it.

Good for you for putting him out of his misery.  I don't think I would have been so tough.

Good for you.  I often worry that this will happen to me and I don't know if I'll have the strength to do it myself.  I tell myself that if I'm in a car I could use the exhaust and a plastic bag.

by "this", I assume you mean come across a terminally wounded animal that needs compassionate relief and *not* being half run over by a car and left for dead trying to figure out how to finish the job. in either case, I suppose the exhaust would work quickly and would not add any pain or suffering.

This is why everyone should carry a firearm when they bike.

Or a machete.  Never know when the road kill turns out to be a zombie groundhog!

Maybe you were a little too hasty. He could have still had a chance at a productive life.

I would have stopped, but don't know if I could have done anything other than cry...perhaps fashion a sling out of my bike jersey and transport it to a vet.  You think I'm joking.

Once did the same thing with a squirrel while driving my car.  I felt terrible about it for weeks... but think it was the right thing.

On a ride, I came across two crows ripping a robin in half. Horribly eh? Each one had a wing and were pulling it apart. I got of my bike and was ready to intervene, but then I realized that the robin would now probably die anyway, and it I intervened, it would probably suffer longer than if the crows finished with it.

Wow, you're tough. I could not have done it. But it would have been a horrible thing to watch. Good for you.
