Subject: Anyone log non-tri oriented exercise?
Yesterday I got up late and my two year old wanted to go on the run with me (jogging stroller), and then my wife and infant daughter decided they would go, and so my run turned into a (very pleasant) walk. As much as I enjoyed it, I was a little bummed that I wouldn't get in a good workout.

Then I turned to yard work, and cut down three huge dead fruit trees, loaded them all on a utility trailer, and unloaded them on a burn pile (we live in the middle of nowhere). This took about an hour, and I was sweating bullets the whole time, drank about 150 ounces of water, and my arms were worn out worse than if I'd been lifting by the time I got done. I know it's not the same, or close to, a tri-specific workout but I wish there was some way to note in my log that I had burned some calories and worn out my arms and was not just inside watching television. Any thoughts?

Log it! Strength training in the yard is double production. I don't log it if I'm riding the lawnmowerfor example. You're going to swim faster if you do lotsa yard work that strengthens your arms.

There is a way!    In the log under "Sports"  there is a drop down list of activities ranging from Ballet to Curling to Yard Work.  You can record the amount of time you spent doing the activity.  I always note the intensity and any pertinent information in the Sports comments section.  It's amazing how those hours of activity really rack up.  It makes me feel a little better when I look at my monthly Tri totals when they are low and realize I was in dance rehearsal for 25 hours that month.

Yep, the sports category has just about everything you can imagine - take advantage of it!

I only like things that aren't triathlon related if I want to remember that I've done them when i look back at my stats for the year. Skiing/snowboarding, hiking, and kayaking fall into those categories. Yard work doesn't!

Thanks for the good responses. I guess 'when in doubt, read the instructions.' I didn't realize there was already a place for it. . . . .

Danielle, I agree that there's no sense logging raking leaves or sitting on a lawnmower, but I think it makes sense if you can be intellectually honest about it. When you live in the middle of nowhere "yard work" is a whole lot different than when you live in a more populous area.

If you think about it too much it gets a little meta. . . .what distinguishes a hike from walking your property line to check fences? I guess to each his own, as long as you stay honest!

[off to log typing this response, my fingers are worn out]

Not saying it's wrong to log or not log something, those are just my guidelines for logging things.

Curling? Seriously?

. . . goes and checks . . .

Well I'll be damned. Curling.

I log everything. If yard work makes me sweat and elevates my heartrate, it gets logged. I'll log the beach volleyball game tonight. I log "Stair-running" under sports because I want to break it out of other run workouts. I logged my physical therapy as "water aerobics", to the great amusement of some.

I logged soccer when I used to play. It helps keep track of what all I did. I used my soccer in off season as my interval run each week.

Curling...my daughter wants to do Curling. Funny sport...but she watched all the matches in the Olympics. While visiting her Grandparents, she got to go watch curling match. My parents friends are big into curling, but Shasha was late as the season was almost over. Not to sure but doubt there are many 10 year olds begging their Mom to take curling lessons. Now just to find someplace in MA to that has instruction..

I log extra work around the house/yard/shop if it is a contributing factor in not tri training, or a reduction in training time.
If I honestly work hard in the yard for 4-5 hours during a day, I get lots done, but I don't really feel like running afterwards. I want to be able to look at my log and know why the reduced training.

I log most everything.

If it's just go out in the yard and pull a couple of weeds, no.  But if I spend two hours digging/transplanting/watering etc.  then you bet I log it.

I also like to track how much I stretch/hike and some other stuff.

Do what feels right to you.

I will log things if I think they might affect my training.

So, if I were doing heavy yard work (or anything else like shoveling snow, engaging in other sports, etc) and expected sore muscles the next day, I would most certainly log it.

I often forget to log my horseback riding when I am just schooling the horse, but I almost always log it if I have a lesson, since I take them into account when planning tri training.

I've wanted to do curling ever since I saw the Olympics this year! Probably an awesome leg workout too...

still waiting to see if anyone has ever logged in their croquet time (it's an option, check it out) . . . maybe my new rule will be "if you can drink alcohol while you're doing it, don't log it"

(and if I knew how to do that "strike through" thing for "can" I would have . . . )

Saturday I was carrying drywall into the basement and hanging it....Myself.   I didn't LOG it as a normal workout, just noted it on Saturdays training log so that those that check in on it know I was busy doing SOMETHING
