So, I was on a ride today, pulling my 2 yr. old son in the trailer (my 5 yr. old son was at summer playground), and I look up and the sky is looking grim.  I was 45 min. in so I turned around and about 10 minutes later the sky opened up.  Pouring rain.  I raced home in about 20 minutes, jumped into the car, soak and wet, to pick up my other son, only to find once I got there, that my neighbor had picked him up.  The real disappointment, however, was I only got about 3/4 of my ride in!!!

Yesterday, I went on a run pushing my 2 yr. old in the jogger with my oldest on the bike asking me "Am I pushing you hard, Mommy?"  Who needs a coach???

I'm sure a lot of you out there train with kids in tow (or push).  I'd love to hear some stories (esp. ones that include telling of your children that do tris with you now!

I am a trimommy!!  How about you!

I have a 2 yr old also.  He hates the jogger and doesn't care much for the trailer (which is a pretty good one!).  But I always carry the rain shield in the back of the trailer for situations like you describe.  I do not have another child to collect though!

I haven't used the jogger since the time he managed to almost get out of it and is lucky he doesn't have a tread mark up the middle of his forehead.  He absolutely refused to get back in when I tried to straighten him out but he also refused to walk.  So I had to carry him a mile home.  This wouldn't be so bad except I had to push the jogger with one arm and hold him with the other.  Never again.

My son did a duathlon in our kitchen last night.  He ran a lap around the kitchen/living room, jumped on his tricycle for another lap, and then put it in transition and went for another run.  The funniest part was the arms that went up over his head as he crossed the imaginary finish line.  Priceless.  He had wanted to swim first but we don't have a pool

My favorite thing though is hearing "go mommy, go mommy" during my races.

I am a tri mom!  And now my hubby has decided to do a tri too, we take the kids to our training or we juggle it. My kids have always come to track workouts (they love to run and jump in the long jump pit!) and they watch while I do swim class. They love to ride their bikes while we run. I guess we have been a positive influence because my oldest has done 3 tris and my youngest did a duathlon (he refused to swim) last month. I have pictures in my album:

Hats off to all of you training with kids in tow!

I'm not often training with my kids (3 & 5), but they do come to a lot of races.  They yell at the top of their lungs, "P U T P Mommy".  Which is a phrase commonly used around our house that means 'Pick up the pace.'  Btw, they also say this to me in the grocery store.

Well my 11yr old daughter rides her bike next to me while I run and my 14yr old son will run part of the way with me then ride his bike for the rest. My daughter is on the local swim team so I run at the track while she is at practice (too bad I can't swim at the same location that she is at) my son will run with me sometimes. Most of my bike training is mountain biking and my son will ride with me if I promise to do some decent downhill single track.

Hopefully next year both my son and daughter will compete in our local kids triathlon. Then the aim is for all three of us to compete as a relay team with my daughter doing the swim me doing the bike and my son doing the run. I'm just not sure if my daughter will be old enough to compete as she is only 11, she is definately good enough as she swims 1:25/100 for distance.

It would be miserable if my kids didn't have any interest in joining in with some of my training, this way I get to spend more time with them. Oh and btw I go to the gym to workout with my wife most mornings at 4:45am.

I have two kids, 6 and 9. They have always done rides, first in the trailer, then the trail-a-bike, and now on their own two wheels. The whole family has done a few 5ks together. This summer, they started riding their bikes along while I run. At my first race this year, they gave out a postcard advertising a kids triathlon, which I left on the kitchen table without saying a word. My son and my wife both noticed and got excited about it. I never pushed. As the race got closer, my son kept asking, so I signed him up, and he did his first tri! The distances were quite short, 100m, 5k, .5 mi, and he didn't do any specific 'training'. When he wanted to do another race, I told him I'd pay the money if he'd do two BRICK workouts and do a few laps in the pool now and then. He agreed.

It's gone well. My daughter was riding along during the second BRICK, and she asked if she could do what her big brother was doing, so she got off of her bike and ran a quick .5 mile also. I'm guessing that she'll be wanting to race next year when she's 7. My son and I will both be racing at the Millennium Triathlon in Grand Rapids, MI, tomorrow. I'm very proud of both of them and am thrilled that they enjoy the active lifestyle my wife and I love.

I'm a tri mom too!! I have two boys, 1 & 3, and my 3 year old loves to run! He says when he gets older he's going to be a runner just like mommy...I love it! I do 2 or 3 runs with the boys in the jogging stroller a week. The funniest thing is when I'm going up a hill and struggling to push them up it and my 3 year old shouts, "Go faster mommy!"...gotta love him!
My husband and I run local 5Ks with the boys in the stroller. I love when I'm able to pass people that are running w/o a stroller! Ha!
My husband and the boys also come to my tri races. When I finish, they're always there at the finish line, and my 3yr. old always says, "good job mommy!" He's so cute!
We have a bike trailer, but are hesitant to put our 1 year old in it with our 3 year old at this point. Our 3 yr. old loves it, but I can just imagine the "wrestling" that would go on in that trailer if both of them were in it together..ha ha!!
I haven't thought about bringing them to the track with me...I'll definately try that next time. Maybe I'll bring their sand toys to play with in the long jump pit...they would love that!
While training with 2 small boys is definitely challenging, I love the fact that I'm exposing them to a healthy lifestyle. Hopefully they'll follow in our footsteps!

I'm a trimom as well....my daughter just turned 4 last month.  She helped me train for my first 20k & was part of my shorter runs for my first marathon last January.  I give her kudos b/c she has even stuck it out in that jogger (which, btw, we have the most archaic model...I swear, I pushed a BOB at the IMLP last month & had to call my bf over...he goes, our jogger might as well have _ and here he inserted the name of a tank from WWII _ stamped on the side.  I joke that my runs w/her should count as weight training...) with a dynamite attitude.  Whenever I feel myself fading while we're together, she cheers me on.  We've also gotten a lot of smiles during our neighborhood runs while she sings me Twinkle Twinkle, the alphabet...the Barney song...well, you get the idea.

She loves looking through Triathlete magazine & seems lately to have taken to Bike Nashbar & Competitive Cyclist....it seems she has interest in the bike most of all.  She's also always asking me if I'm the person posing in the Orca ad....no honey, that's not mommy, that's a man.  Kiss

I love the fact that she's interested in what we do & I hope that when she's old enough, she'll want to check it out & see if it's right for her.  Our training scheudles get a little nutty & she gets pushed around a bit when we have long days, but I think all in all, it's a very healthy lifestyle that she finds exciting.  She had a BALL at my first sprint & I can't wait to take her to our next race!

When I was training for the NYC Marathon last year, half my training runs were while pushing my son in the baby jogger.  He was three at the time.  Now he's four and a half and he's just too big for the thing!  I tried putting my 2-yr-old daughter in the baby jogger, but she only lasts a mile and a half tops and she starts crying, "Wanna go home daddy, wanna go hooome!"  You women

I will always have fond memories of pushing my son in the baby jogger though.  He would talk and talk (babble really) but it was so much fun and I felt like we really bonded on some of our longer runs.  Once I think we did a 10-miler!  I always brought money for the ice cream man and we'd stop, get ice cream, and then he'd eat and slurp ice cream while I broke my butt running!  He'd hand me a slimy stick and say, "I'm done daddy."  I remember one day a yellow jacket went up his shorts and I had to sprint over a mile back to the house with him crying and me panicking.  But it was all fine.  Most times we'd do 6-milers and he'd be awake for the first 3 miles and fell asleep for the last three.

Okay, I'm all mushy and emotional now ... thanks a lot

TriDad here.
Most of my runs are with my 2 y.o. son in the BOB jogger. I live in a hilly town, so pushing the jogger has been great training. I've even do interval sets with him. When I come to a hill in a race, I always think that running it in the race is easier than pushing the jogger up it. We have a bike trailer, but I don't use it for training, just for trips to the park/playground etc. My son's first event was when he was 4 months old and was a cyclocross race, we started young, too bad he slept through it. His first words were "go go", soon he added "go go daddy". My team manager sent a child sized jersey for him on his first birthday which was an exact replica of our team jersey, he wears it to all of my races. We've done three 5k's together, and he always beats me.

When he sees me put on my cycling kit, he asks, "daddy go go?" And if I'm running, he say's "I'm running", gets a big grin and starts running through the house. He loves to ride his 'big wheel' and swim. I might have a triathlete.

Another tri mom here. My kids are a little older 10 and 12 and I can't always get them out there but every now and then I can get them to ride while I run or something along those lines. I also take them to the track and park when I run there.  Last week I actually bought them both road bikes that I found on consignment at the LBS.  They love it.  The youngest is VERY competitive and I think he might stick with it so long as I keep giving him the opportunity to ride.  He said his goal is to be able to ride 25 miles with me.   I can't wait and am enjoying the journey along the way.

Tonight they will want to ride and I was going to run the trails at the park so I'm not sure which will win out since they were off yesterday.

Same here!  Only my 3yo is a girl.  She yells, "you can do it Mama" when I'm biking them up a hill.  Now that my 18 month old has a few words, he will probably start cheering too.  (We've been on vacation so no family training recently).  My kids do great in the trailer together.  a couple books, waters, snacktraps... good to go!  Both kids started in the bike trailer at ~1 year - the earliest recommended age for such - mostly due to neck strength needed for the helmet and jostling.  I've also not done the track/sandpit workouts but have heard it works well for some!  My 3yo has run across the finish line with me at my sprint tri and across the line at 5Ks on her own

I have a 5 yr old and a 7 yr old. This summer has been a challenge getting training in. But earlier in the summer when they had swim team I would swim laps while they had their practice. You can bet I was the only mom doing that.  I also  swim laps during the 10 minute adult swim. I usually manage a 600 or 700. Not great but better than nothing. Or I just practice my strokes.

Mostly I lack in the bike since I can't cycle with them--they are too slow. But I can run along side them while they bike.  Their pace is good. Not too much slower than what I would do anyway and in the heat, who cares. If it is just my daughter--the 7 yr old_- I can crank out my tempo pace. Usually we do 6 miles but have done quite a few 10 milers and recently a 12 miler--at an 8:10 pace. I would love it if they could get manage 20 miles --maybe next summer.

I also do speed work with them while I run on the track. They race me on their bikes for sprints. Then they get bored and go play on the playground.

I do like running with them on the bike--they carry my crap--but I am looking forward to school starting and having the freedom to run as far and as fast as want or more importantly ride my bike.

Sometimes I feel guilty that I am subjecting them to my training when they should just get to play but my parents did it to me (they were runners) so I reassure myself in that I am teaching them the importance of discipline and a healthy lifestyle.

I'm a tri mom with 4 kids, 12,11,8&6 They have all done at least 1 tri. The older 2 will be doing their 4th one tomorrow.  They don't usually come with me on my workouts but I will watch them and give them pointers while they are running or we go on family rides but my 8yr old is a little slower then the rest of us so not much "training" going on just good old fun with the kids! They all seem to enjoy it. I know it means the world to me to hear them and my hubby cheering me on in a race! I don't push them and make it as fun as possible. I'm glad I am showing them a healthy lifestyle that they will hopefully continue as they get older.

I am a Tri Mom.. I push my 2 yr old and 5 month old in the BOB. The 5 mo old just had his first run with me about 2 weeks ago - how exciting. He sleeps everytime we go for a run.

The funniest thing is when I was just starting to get back into shape after having him, I had only my 2 yr old out with me.. and I was jogging and she said "Why's Mommy crying?" over and over again - because I was breathing so hard.

Now when we go for runs, she is such a little chatterbox - loves to point everything out to me - boat, mama? river, mama? red bird, mama? motorcycle, mama? hear the train, mama? Its cute but she always wants me to answer her... and so I have to be at a pace where I can still talk!

I did a 10k last weekend and she did her first ever 1k fun run. I love it.

I have 2 boys, now almost 3 and 5 1/2....last summer was my first tri season and I trained pushing or pulling one or both almost exclusively....this year I have managed to find a way to train solo, since I enjoy the solitude of training and have been doing much longer workouts that they would not deal with in a stroller.  I do still end up pushing the stroller at times, or pulling one in the bike trailer--suddenly they are way too heavy to be pulled together!

My oldest is interested in doing a kids' tri, although since he just opted to take off his training wheels, he's not quite ready for competition.....they will both come to my next two tris and hopefully next summer will participate on their own.

I watched my dad do tris growing up, and it took me until I was 38 to start doing this, so I am not going to push them to do it unless they want to. I will definitely be encouraging, though, you know it!

Another TriDad here

I do a lot of my runs with the 18month old in the baby jogger.  My wife and son will come to the beach while I do open water swims.  I've learned to survive on very little sleep, and a lot of coffee.

My 9 year-old son and I were sitting down in the shade after our races yesterday, enjoying the scene, and, out of the blue, he said, "I feel so good right now." Later, on the way home, he asked, "Can I use your bike trainer?" It was a great day of father-son bonding, and he made me very proud.

Another Tri mom here. I have done most of my bike training pulling my 5 year old on the trail a bike. He loves it. We have gone on a couple 90+ minute rides together. I love our bonding time on the bike. He won't be able to go with me after wed to much since he starts K. He wasn't able to go cheer me on at my first tri, so he is really excited to come watch me on my next one in oct. Said he is going to make me a sign that says "go mommy go"

I took my 17 year old son to the Lonestar Tri Festival in March and he decided he wants to do IMAZ in two years. I told him he needed to do a couple of sprints first. He goes to the river to swim with his friends. He rides his bike to "two a day football training" most days. It has really changed our relationship.  He has a different kind of respect for me and is genuinely encouraging when I talk to him about my training. His friends even ask me about my races and training.  He's doing his second sprint this weekend (I'll be racing too) We don't train much together he is a strong runner and....dang he's a 17 year old boy and kicks my butt at everything (but the swim) I like the example that I'm setting for him, and he really is paying attention.

This is a picture of us at his first tri. In my album there is a picture of him picking up his 2nd place AG trophy.....

Tri_chic's boy's bikes are really cool!
