My feet feel like they are on fire! anyone experienced this? I've been fitted for shoes and decided to go with the mizunos. Now keep in mind, I've been dealing with this since this past march when i ran ING georgia.

Now I didn't experience it in training too much, but on race day it was pretty evident. Especially around mile 8+. My feet just felt like they were on fire and with every step I felt the ground. It was horrible. I just chocked it up to needing new shoes before the 1/2. I tried different socks etc. but still nothing.

Then yesterday I ran the peachtree road race (10k). Same thing Do I need to just try a different brand of shoes? These were newer mizunos too.

It sucks to do anything when you feet are tender. ANy suggestions?

Is your skin on fire or are you shoes rubbing or do your feet hurt on the inside?

This could be one of many things, but my first thought is athlete's foot.   Not very sexy, but easily remedied with some foot powder and/or cream (not just Dr. Scholls - get one with miconozale).

it wasn't my skin on fire per se, but more the rubbing or the friction of my shoe causing my feet to feel like they were going to catch fire.

if I'm not in those shoes I'm fine that's why I didn't think athlete's foot.

Like you said, it's more of the rubbing action causing the fire.

maybe go down 1/2 shoe size?

oh and it's only the bottom part of my foot that is irritated. not in between the toes or anything or on top, just under where the sole of my foot meets the shoe.

I find that if I tie my shoe too tight, the ball of my foot will burn.

I think I did this the other day and my right foot went numb. Then it felt like I was running on pins and needles. It was painful. So much so I had to stop running running.

Are you tying your shoes too tight?

I've defintely had the foot falling asleep/pins and needles sensation and have tried new shoes, different shoes (wider width) and not tying them too tightly. In my case I know I'm dealing with a bad ankle on the foot that falls asleep and really my issue is more joint related and just plain intermittant. I usually have to stop, not just walk, but completely stop to restore the proper circulation to my foot before I continue. Then I'm usually fine.

Could it be a pinched nerve? Does it happen during short runs or on long runs?

Did you get fitted for you shoes over at Big Peach or Phiddipides? Those guys are really helpful addressing foot issues.

A good friend of mine has suffered with "feet on fire" syndrome for years.  She gets in when either walking or running more than a few miles regardless of how great the shoe fits.  The only thing that has helped her is moleskin on her hot spots applied generously.

It is probably your shoes. I have a pair of Nike shoes that this happens with. I think it has a stiff insole. anyway, this never happens when i wear my usual Asics Gel kayanos.

I don't think I'm tying my shoes too tight. I mean they still feel loose and i'm not going numb or anything.

no orthotics.

this sucks.

and yep. I got fitted at the Big Peach - but I have not addessed this with them at this point.

Have you tried pulling the inserts out of the old shoes or at least ones that do not cause this problem and putting them in the Mizuno's and see what happens? I know what you are talking about since I have had this problem before with certain types of shoes. You can run for a little while and then after a bit into the run the forefeet have a buring sensation. Usually for me it is the inserts or not enough forefoot cushioning.

I'm thinking it might be nerve-related...maybe a neuroma or metatarsalgia?  If the shoes bother you that much, I would go back to the store and return them.   What shoe did they put you in?  Maybe try a different brand of shoe in that same category.  If the issue continues, then I would definitely schedule a visit with a podiatrist...preferably one that has a sports injuries background.

I get this problem in my basketball shoes all the time. I play 4-5 pickup games and burning feet which lasts that night and the following day. This is why I don't ball anymore after I start training. Anyways, I believe if comes from sweat, loose shoes and my feet pounding. Try running on softer surfaces. Dirt/grass>asphalt>concrete. Maybe a smaller shoe size. Did you go to a running store for these shoes? Another option might be thicker socks. Try some training runs in different socks if your confident in the shoes.

Sorry, see now you got fitted for these. Try different socks. Might be hotter now and your feet sweat more.

I think like many of you said it may be the insoles of the shoes. Unfortunetly, I don't have any other "running" shoes or even tennis shoes as I've just started re-learning to run. But I can remember running some few years ago in Saucony's and not having this issue. Maybe I should go back to ole' faithful???  I tried the sock thing, that didn't work (tried 4 separate pair)

I will deal with it for the next week and a half and then when I return from my overseas trip I'll go back to the store and purchase some new shoes. Then, I'll try the insole thing. Hell, I may even purchase some insoles and try it just to try it.

I can't imagine running another half with that feeling. that would be horrible.

But it really makes a girl not want to run.

I did this in my first race earlier this year.  Nobody warned me that your feet swell, especially running in the heat.
Ended up having to completely stop 4 times and take my shoes off to stretch my feet.  Already being a slow runner it completely killed my run time and put me almost last.
Lesson learned

What about your socks? I know everyone here yells if you run in cotton socks, but when I tried to run in a technical pair of socks, my feet felt exactly the way you are describing. I went back to cotton socks and there have been zero issues.

x2 on the socks.  I had a horrible hot spot on my last run.  I was wearing an older pair of Balega running socks.  No issues after changing to a newer pair.  Make sure you socks are not worn out!

Yup, socks are HUGE deal for me, too!  It can make the difference between a pleasant run and a downright AWFUL run!  And let me preface that, by saying that I'm not a particular big fan of running to begin with.  So having a downright AWFUL run due to the pair of socks I'm wearing, makes me pretty grumpy.  Wink

I've been experimenting with various types of different socks lately.  I require a sock with LOTS of cushioning...more so than the average running sock provides.  My "go to" sock has always been Thorlo's thickest mini-crew.  I rarely have issues when wearing this sock, especially if they're NEW.

I also have a few pairs of Smartwool running socks (medium cushion), which generally work okay for me...unless I run over 4 miles, which at that point I begin to have issues.

And lastly, I have 2 pairs of Balega socks (the thickest ones that they offer), and while they are very comfy and cushy...they just don't cut it for anything over a 5k.  I have extremely picky feet. LOL

thank you all for your suggestions.

I tried Balega (?) socks. but they were thin and didn't do anything for me. I tried adidas and one really thick other brand (it's yellow and gray) and they still had the burning sensation too. I'll keep trying the sock issue, but I kinda want to try a whole new shoe to begin ith and possibly go back to ole'faithful...the Saucony.
