Giver 18427 | Subject: RE: Favorite Guitar Riff OK...so I love this thread. I voted for Jack White. The intro to Seven Nation Army, that's built on throughout the song, shakes me to the bone. It's basically a bass line done on guitar with drop standard but an octave-lowering pedal (cause there ain't no bass in the White Stripes). It starts simple and bass-y, then explodes into a buzz saw/flamethrower of a screaming lick. It's awesome. And I can play it! BTW...I'm a geek. |

Elite 3022 Preferably on my bike somewhere | Subject: RE: Favorite Guitar Riff I'm a recovered guitar player - techno producer now. Do I still count? ;-) Kashmir and Immigrant Song are 2 of the best. It's hard to vote against Led Zeppelin for guitar riffs. One that is not on the list but still a fav is "Nobody's Fault but Mine". |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: Favorite Guitar Riff Kashmir was my choice! What would be fun/interesting/stupid would be to write the sound and have people guess at it (like with Cranium but not vocal). Dududun dududududun... |

I set it up as a multiple choice poll. You can vote for more than one song. But I think it only lets you vote once - but you can choose as many as you like. Ten Years After rocks! I thought they were one of the highlights of Woodstock. |

Extreme Veteran 511 Minneapolis, MN | Subject: RE: Favorite Guitar Riff run4yrlif - 2005-10-04 7:01 AM So last night I taught myself the bass line (on guitar) from "Feel Good, Inc." by Gorillaz. By ear. I rule! (actually, I suck so much that this little accomplishment pleases me to no end). I know what you mean. I had guitar lessons for 6 months in the early 80's. My teacher was big on playing by ear and I came from a music reading background. He played in a top-40 bar band and was very good. Well one week I was really proud for having worked out the chords of some Steve Miller song and he suggested I try something harder. That really shot me down. So the next week I brought in a cassette tape of a "garage" band that was just starting to make a splash in the music world - it was Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" and I hit the play button and as the intro to "Fight Fire With Fire" started, he looked at me and said "what the hell is that?" His expression was priceless. But he actually worked through it with me and figured out the backing chords. The solo work was way beyond me. My 15 year old son is learning to play. I haven't played much since before he was born, but I can still play. There's nothing more therapeutic and relaxing. I think confidence has a lot to do with picking up songs by ear. |

Elite 3088 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Favorite Guitar Riff If we're talking just riffs, I'd say Crazy Train. Although two newer ones just occured to me: No Phone by Cake and B.Y.O.B. by System of Down. If we're talking full songs, I'd probably have to opt for SRV's version of Little Wing. |

I've played plenty of gigs as a last minute sub and if you're going to perform in front of an audience playing songs you've never played before with musicians you've just met and with no charts, then confidence is absolutely the key. That and an ear. |

Champion 8903 | Subject: RE: Favorite Guitar Riff I'm going to go "all acoustic" here. A lot of these I can (sorta) play and no matter, they still are great fun. In no particular order, though I do like Pinball Wizard and the ELP tunes best: 1. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (Crosby, Stills & Nash) 2. Hotel California (Eagles) 3. From The Beginning (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) 4. Lucky Man (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) 5. Bleed To Love Her (Fleetwood Mac) 6. Big Love (Fleetwood Mac) 7. Good Riddance (Green Day) ..... better known as "Time Of Your Life" 8. Cats In The Cradle (Harry Chapin) 9. Mother Goose (Jethro Tull) 10. Thick As A Brick (Jethro Tull) 11. Dust In The Wind (Kansas) ..... how could anyone not mention this one 12. That's The Way (Led Zeppelin) ..... acoustic version 13. Classical Gas (Mason Williams) 14. Fall Of The Peacemaker (Molly Hatchet) 15. My My, Hey Hey (Neil Young) ..... another "can't miss" riff 16. Play With Fire (Rolling Stones) ..... oh yeah, should be top of the list! 17. Take Your Mama Out All Night (Scissor Sisters) 18. All For You (Sister Hazel) 19. Free Fallin' (Tom Petty) 20. Fast Car (Tracy Chapman) 21. Pinball Wizard (The Who) ..... big time fun to play this one! Edited by max 2005-10-06 7:18 AM |

Extreme Veteran 511 Minneapolis, MN | Subject: RE: Favorite Guitar Riff Max, I like your taste. Ironically, the thread on Wal-Mart censoring lyrics made me remember one of the most popular riffs of all time - Louie, Louie. I think there is a difference between a song with a great riff, and a song with great solo work. I would place Hotel California in the second category. Maybe we should start a thread for great guitar solos? Another great guitar solo is in "25 or 6 to 4". I think "Carry On My Wayward Son" has a great riff in it. But "Dust In The Wind" is just a great song. "Cats in the Cradle" is one of my all time favorites. "Night Moves" by Bob Seger is another fun acoustic song. There was this one guy who used to play his acoustic guitar on the Mall Germain in St. Cloud. He would just set up and people tossed change in his guitar case. The college kids would fry their brains on the metal bands in the bars, then come rolling out, loaded with cheap bear, form a circle, and sing "Puff, the Magic Dragon". Fun times. |
