Giver 18427  | Subject: RE: Favorite Guitar Riff OK...so I love this thread. I voted for Jack White. The intro to Seven Nation Army, that's built on throughout the song, shakes me to the bone. It's basically a bass line done on guitar with drop standard but an octave-lowering pedal (cause there ain't no bass in the White Stripes). It starts simple and bass-y, then explodes into a buzz saw/flamethrower of a screaming lick. It's awesome. And I can play it! BTW...I'm a geek. |

It's hard to vote against Led Zeppelin for guitar riffs. One that is not on the list but still a fav is "Nobody's Fault but Mine". |

By ear. I rule! (actually, I suck so much that this little accomplishment pleases me to no end). I know what you mean. I had guitar lessons for 6 months in the early 80's. My teacher was big on playing by ear and I came from a music reading background. He played in a top-40 bar band and was very good. Well one week I was really proud for having worked out the chords of some Steve Miller song and he suggested I try something harder. That really shot me down. So the next week I brought in a cassette tape of a "garage" band that was just starting to make a splash in the music world - it was Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" and I hit the play button and as the intro to "Fight Fire With Fire" started, he looked at me and said "what the hell is that?" His expression was priceless. But he actually worked through it with me and figured out the backing chords. The solo work was way beyond me. My 15 year old son is learning to play. I haven't played much since before he was born, but I can still play. There's nothing more therapeutic and relaxing. I think confidence has a lot to do with picking up songs by ear. |

Although two newer ones just occured to me: No Phone by Cake and B.Y.O.B. by System of Down. If we're talking full songs, I'd probably have to opt for SRV's version of Little Wing. |

I've played plenty of gigs as a last minute sub and if you're going to perform in front of an audience playing songs you've never played before with musicians you've just met and with no charts, then confidence is absolutely the key. That and an ear. |

Ironically, the thread on Wal-Mart censoring lyrics made me remember one of the most popular riffs of all time - Louie, Louie. I think there is a difference between a song with a great riff, and a song with great solo work. I would place Hotel California in the second category. Maybe we should start a thread for great guitar solos? Another great guitar solo is in "25 or 6 to 4". I think "Carry On My Wayward Son" has a great riff in it. But "Dust In The Wind" is just a great song. "Cats in the Cradle" is one of my all time favorites. "Night Moves" by Bob Seger is another fun acoustic song. There was this one guy who used to play his acoustic guitar on the Mall Germain in St. Cloud. He would just set up and people tossed change in his guitar case. The college kids would fry their brains on the metal bands in the bars, then come rolling out, loaded with cheap bear, form a circle, and sing "Puff, the Magic Dragon". Fun times. |
