we're having a hard time finding a name which matches his personality, which our whole family likes, and which the kids can pronounce. here are the top five. the list doesn't include fergus, since i decided maybe MAYBE we could end up with a boy someday and i wanted to 'save' the name. i like bernard/bernie, but my husband vetoed that. oliver and a few others (like xavier) were disqualified because we know folks who have kids with the same name. anyway, we'll probably let ella make the final choice, but i thought y'all could help us narrow it down. please vote for your top two favorites! :

+ LEOPOLD/LEO - german, english, french - 'Brave people', leo is connected to the sun
+ BARTHOLOMEW/BART - hebrew, greek - 'Son of Talmai'
+ FELIX FELICITIS/FELIX- english, german, french - 'lucky, successful' - harry potter golden good luck potion
+ PEREGRINE/PIPPIN/PIP - english - 'traveler' - lord of the rings. cat is smarter than the character of pippin, but i still like the name
+ MONTAGUE/MONTY - french, english - 'pointed mountain' - matches him well, but my husband and i have some negative connotations having known some wierd or flakey 'monty's - also, fiona can't say it, so it comes out like 'monkey'

I considered boycotting this poll because it would have been much funnier if you had left it open for additions... but pressed between the five, I went for Bart. I thought the play on words was catchy and of course the Simpsons is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time.

I voted for Bart. Leo, Felix, Pip and Monty all seemed sort of juvenile or even effeminate. Like the name of an 11 year old British schoolboy in short pants. But Bart, that's a solid name for a solid cat. Trustworthy, straightforward. Bart. He even looks like a Bart.

Oh and by the way, I loooove Alphonse Mucha. I had no idea he'd done an ad for a bicycle company. Still, he did ads for everyone else, so why not?

Montague. He's really cute. Of course, you can pick the longest, most obscure name and then change it every 3 months and it won't matter, because the look of utter comtempt will be the same.

Well, he is a very good looking cat and seems bright and alert so I would vote for Leo.  Bart is too silly, Felix would remind everyone of Felix the Cat,  Pip is etiher a simple a character or one of Gladys Knight's sidekicks, and Montague sounds too darned stuffy.  My own choice for such a sage looking cat would have been Aristotle, Ari for short.

I always said if I got a yellow tomcat (my favorite kind of cat, by the way) I would name him Jonesy , after the cat in Alien.  But that's not one of the choices, so in that case, instead of voting for one, I'll vote against one:  Bart    sounds too much like Fart.

Love that cat...just love him!

BellinghamSpence - 2005-11-30 3:30 PM Kitty.  As in "here Kitty Kitty".

Hey, that's MY cat's name.  She defies ownership, so to give her a name would have been pure human arrogance.  I'm optimistic that my next cat will love me

I like Pippin. But, then again, I named my cat Sam, short for Samwise. And my dog Rylie, after the Rylander Theatre in Americus, Ga. (she was born in that town). So there you go.

OLIVANDER! i know, i know, it wasn't even on the list. and, hopefully it isn't bad luck for him since olivander disappears (for those who haven't read any harry potter, olivander is a wand maker). we were leaning towards pippin or bart, but then bart/fart thing made us revisit that name. we still liked oliver, but know folks with kids named oliver. olivander was a nice version of the name with literary connections. so, otto and olivander. we'll probably call him oli or olive or vander. fiona can say oli and olive (ah-we, and ah-wif anyway), and ella can actually say olivander quite clearly. anyway, thanks for all the help. if anything, it helped us narrow down the type of name we wanted. thanks!

as if y'all are that concerned - he wasn't olivander after all. once he was comfortable and showing his true kitty self, we knew that wasn't the right name. so, after a few days as drew/bart/fergus/orange cat/new cat/little cat, and then a few more as olivander, we ended up naming him louis (pronounced lou-is, like louis armstrong, but most of the time we're calling him lew-ee or lou). we wanted a name that fit his princely, sunny, extroverted self - so being named loosely after louis xiv (more the idea of 'the sun king' than the actual king louis xiv) seemed to fit. plus, his two litter names were 'drew', rhymes with 'lou', and lou-ee, sort of rhymes with 'orangie'. when we named otto, we wanted a name that was similar to his litter name (which was 'uh-oh', hence the renaming!). louis is already getting along really well with both otto and greta. he'll even stand still and let greta lick him, something otto didn't do until we'd had greta for a couple years, and which frida never let her do (well, 'cept in her last few days). he is a real sweetheart, with a personality quite similar to otto (and almost as vocal).

ps. ty, punting practice! for shame! and hey, my dog could beat up your dog. actually, all my dog would need to do would be to SIT on your dog!
