Subject: RE: What's with the grunting??There are two parts to it. 1 ) In some martial arts some masters teach the students to exhale with great force or "yell/grunt" a word or sound as you make contact. Similarly in Tennis you are attempting to hit through the ball with as much force and control as possible. You tend to use your core muscles as you make contact which will tighten up your abdomen (and diaphragm ) and tend to force more guttural noises out. Just like if you are trying to push a car from a dead stop, you might grunt while exerting all your effort. Most people learn to exhale in a quieter manor, but some just embrace the grunt and go with it. 2 ) It's a rhythm, concentration thing. Athlete's can be creatures of habit (think baseball pitchers ), so they have some "thing" that they do to keep there concentration and rhythm all in place. This explains why some grunt even on a drop shot which is all finesse and no power. |
