Subject: Pretty Big Day

Yesterday was the 1st day of 1st grade for my little J......and the day she lost her first tooth!

When we pulled it, it was in a rag that I sat on the table. When J realized that she was "bleeding profusely" she wanted a towel. My wife, not thinking (blamed it on pregnancy brain) grabbed the rag with the tooth in it and gave it to J. Well....guess what. The tooth flew off into the abyss.

After convinving J that teeth have GPS on them and that we'll just write the tooth fairy a note explaining that it was somewhere in the livingroom, we found it. Disaster overted.

Then....the tooth fairy woke her up last night....but it's lightning fast thinking and ninja cat-like reflexes saved the day.

So is the tooth fairy generous or stingy? What's a tooth worth these days??

Can you elaborate on these ninja skills?

Tooth Fairy gave $1.

The ninja in me kicked in and I dropped to the floor, shimmied over to her bed, grabbed tooth with left hand, patted her back with right hand.....put $1 underneath her pillow, then bear crawled out.

Straight up Ninja skillz, yo......and yes....I was wearing a tooth fairy outfit. what? who DOESN'T have an adult sized fairy costume for a 6'0 male???

Two things.  The tooth fairy that visits our house doesn't want to wake anyone up, so she needs the tooth in the den in a special cup with a note.  Also, our tooth fairy is stingy.  Pays $1.  However, since I told the boy he might get a nickle, it was a massive windfall.

Congrats. The day my daughter lost her first tooth was the day her little brother punched her right in the face.

Similar here, except the older brother yanked it right out of younger brother's mouth. Ain't they sweet?

My kids are weird about this.  My daughter has pulled all of her own teeth, then just handed it to me like it's no big deal.  My son will not pull his teeth, nor let them be pulled.  He just waits for them to wiggle out themselves.  We think he swallowed two of them..

We also have them write a note, then leave it hanging out from the pillow so the tooth fairy sees it.  they got $5.00 for first tooth, $1.00 for every other tooth...

WOW!  I'm way overpaying for teeth.  Not even going to say what the going rate has been in the house.  Apparently the value is supposed to diminish with each tooth.

Our tooth fairy pays $5 for the first, then $1 gold coins (the presidents or sacajawea) and sometimes a $2 bill.

Friends of ours were very mad when a neighbor kid announced that the tooth fairy brought him $20. I have to ask them again how they talked their way out of that becoming the standard.

Our version of the mythology is that the tooth fairy takes the teeth to new babies who need them. As our kids are the oldest of all grandkids/cousins, they are of course sure that their cousins get what we once had here. I am waiting for my 5 year old to inspect a toddler's mouth to see if it seems familiar, then get bitten.

Good times.

I like that mythology. We have none and the kids don't seem to care. It bothers me though and always has. I used to imagine this massive pile of unwanted teeth a bit like the European butter mountain.

Oh you all know the Tooth Fairy CAN'T fly in the rain either.  RIGHT!!!!

Laid down and the next thing I knew, the child was crying bedside the next morning that the toothfairy did not show up.

Our TF did not get the Memo about the amount diminishing with each tooth either.  She must work for Coorperate America?

My friend had no $1 bills and no $1 coins, so had to leave an IOU from the tooth fairy. She has 3 boys, so could not set a $20 bill precedent.

My son is 6 and he has only lost one tooth so far. Dad was in charge of tooth fairy duty. I just asked Gabe what the tooth fairy gave him. "One WHOLE dollar!"

My two boys are almost 6 so I'm expecting some loose teeth in the next year.  Just last night I was showing them YouTube videos of kids pulling their loose teeth out by tying a string round the tooth...with the other end tied to a remote controlled car.  Fun stuff.

There's one with a rocket, too.   My dad always tied them to doorknobs.
