Subject: Background checks

In the two month period from Dec. 2012 - Jan. 2013 the FBI performed background checks on 5.1 MILLION people who were purchasing a gun. Surprised

That number is astounding when you consider that most purchases don't even require a check.

And that's the bottom line. I'm curious to see what it is too.

Wonder how many multiples there were, one person buying more than one gun.

How many were denied?

That number is only relevant when you ask:

How many denied were prosecuted for trying to purchase a firearm as a prohibited person and/or lying on a federal form?

Second question, how many denied were false positives who went on to be able to purchase?

5.1 million.  I believe it.  I stopped at a local gun store today to buy my son a Swiss army knife for his birthday and it was like Walmart on Black Friday.

It's been like that for a couple of months. Just last week they said checks were still taking 10 days. They still had a couple thousand behind the counter waiting.

I accounted for more than one of those 5.1 million.

Another interesting stat from the same bulletin.....8 of the 10 biggest days of background checks since 1998 came in the month after the Sandyhook massacre.

This means nothing. They could do 2 or 5 or 10 times as many checks. All this means is more guns were sold. It does not and will not correlate at all with progress towards reduction in gun violence.

Don't know. There was no link to the info so no story to see the context. The intent of screening is to keep guns from being in the hands of people that are not entitled to them, no ? If not why do any screening at all. All I'm saying is its not possible to screen for intent, especially future intent.

Oh... got it.

The fact is back ground checks do not stop criminals from buying guns. Back ground checks stop prohibited people from buying guns from licsensed dealers at stores. Adam Lanza was denied, but he managed to get them anyway.

Back ground checks have nothing to do with intent. you are either on the list, or you are not. And you have to have done something to be on the list.

Indiana has a very large increase in CCW permit last year and also denied the most it has ever denied.  The number of denials last year was just over 2000, if memory serves correctly.  That is a positive for certain.  The story indicated the reason fro the increased denial was likely due to quicker and more up to date criminal records.

Indiana is a gun friendly state and has allowed concealed carry for as long as I have lived here (25+ years). i know that's a little off topic but.........

I haven't had a CCW for a very long time but I would like to get in for another one soon.

Bought a box of ammo at local outdoors store and the ammo aisle was very crowded and very picked over.

I'm sure many states are similar to mine (Nebraska) but we get one background check every three years at the county sheriff and get a card.  Then when I make a firearm purchase I just show them my card and leave with the gun, so I don't hit the Federal system at all.  So my two purchases in the last two months had no new background checks along with most purchases in Nebraska.

Either way, it's no big secret that gun sales have gone into plaid (exceeded ludicrous speed weeks ago).
