Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am a mother of three (7, 4 and 10 months). I am relatively new to this triathlon stuff. I did one sprint six years ago, took a break and now am working HARD to find the time to keep going. I did a sprint tri in September and one in October and I am hooked! I am 38 and know that I will never be a competitive triathlete, but have solid goals and someday would like to try for a half IM. I have always been athletic, but NEVER a fast runner. I still remember in middle school dreading the presidential challenge where we had to run a certain distance. My goals include increasing my run time (I am training right now for my first half marathon in February), going for an Olympic tri in 2007 and consistently exercising 5 days a week. I also want to lose some weight and go back to pre-mom sizes. I am SO incredibly inspired by these people out there doing IM's and even the woman doing a double IM, but I want to find some other women more in my own speed and goal bracket. I have one friend here who I bike with and my husband and I train together even though he is much faster. I also have a group of women friends who I run with, but they aren't really into the triathlon thing. I know there are tri groups in the area, but sometimes leaving from my own house is the quickest and easiest with three kids. I often find myself having to squeeze in the runs and bikes when my husband can watch the kids. Therefore, it would be great to find other women in my situation in other areas to chat with on BT and help each other stay motivated. This is a GREAT website and very helpful in staying motivated! Thanks to all the BT people who make this happen. |

molto veloce mama ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WELCOME! mom of two...well, three sort of. two of my own - girls ages 3 and 5 1/2...plus a 17 year old boy, german student we are hosting for the year. i started running to get back in (relative) shape after my second daughter was born. hated running, so decided to do a tri, since i love biking and swimming. slowly grew to love running. i have done MOST of my training with the one or more kids in either a burley trailer, or a jogging stroller (we have a single and a double). its hard work, but it helps with speed in races. my average speed in my logs is around 15 mph, because so much is with the kids...but in races i average 19 mph. same with running. anyway, welcome! lots of mamas here, so you are not alone! ![]() |

It is so hard to keep a consistent schedule with the kids but it sounds like you're doing great! I've only done one sprint tri so far (last summer) and I'm signed up to do another in November. I barely have time to train so I'm like you - just trying to get in shape and do the best I can. I'm sure you'll find lots of moms on here to talk with. Good luck!! |

Greatest of luck for your half iron goal and be sure to check the "challenge me" section. It helped me a lot for my training motivation so maybe it can do so for you. Another big help was getting a bike trainer. Just pop a kid's music CD and watch them dance while you pedal away...staying on the same spot. The only side effect to this is you may end up recalling some of the songs in your head while racing the bike segment ( i've been stuck with crazy frog's hits on both of my races). good luck and keep us informed! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() mom of two. 4 years old and 13 months. i completed a sprint in september and a duathlon in august. looking forward to doing many more next year. training time is a precious comedety(sp?) an i often have to wait for my husband to tag me out . the bike trainer in the living room and a gym with really late/early hours has helped me. good to know you all are out there and making it work best you can! |

The hardest years for excercise were the toddler years. Back then, I did a little mtn bike racing, a little bit of jogging, and backstroke in the pool while the kids had lessons. It wasn't much but it helped my sanity levels! |

I started training three years ago after volunteering at a local women's-only tri. I was able to complete a HIM this past summer and plan to do it again next year. I do the same things - trainer in the living room, bike and run early (and sometimes run late), and swim while the girls have swim lessons. I also will do OWS at first light if I can find anyone crazy enough to go with me. Luckily for me, my brother lives close and just started tri-ing this year. He gets up earlier than me, so it works out well for both of us - in the summer I can get a good swim in and be home before the kids even get up. I couldn't even swim a length of the pool when I started so I still attend masters swim twice a week in the evenings. Ok, I'm rambling. Welcome to BT! |

It is hard to find a balance when you have little ones, but with support, creativity and a lilttle sleep deprivation, I have been able to train for and complete three sprints this season. Your goals are totally attainable, especially with all the cool folks on BT. Keep on training, and we will keep on cheering! Welcome!!! |

New user![]() | ![]() i am only a runner, and i haven't been good at it since i had my baby (toddler) now. i 've been regular with my running since memorial day but it is so hard!!! use it or lose it, i ran a 5 mile race on labor day. it felt good, but very long!! when i run (usually with a baby jogger, which is not as much fun, but it gets me outside) i want to stop and just walk. But i'm not qutting. nice site, i will enjoy it here. |

That seems like a great way to involve the kids, what age do you think is a good age to start on this goal? My oldest will be 8 next month. Is running a good idea at this age? |

Well, there is a mom of 5 out there who trains with her daughter. They are awesome! In my case3, all three of mine (11,8, and 6) did their first tri last year at 9,7, and 5. Not much is cuter than watching a little 5-year-old butt swathed in Hello Kitty bikini bottmos heading off on a pink princess bike with streamers and training wheels! The kids races are really at age-appropriate distances, and we did no training last year or this. My 11-year-old is now running with me 2-3x per week - we just started - and is talking about a sprint tri in two years time. So, really, what age to start at really depends on the child. My middle girl at 7 was the most ready to try and the first one to try it last year, while the other two were a little more hesitant. The bike and run are easy, and some kids' tris have a swim course that the child can wade if the need to or allow and encourage lifejackets or water wings for smaller competitors. Check out local races in your area - I bet an 8-year-old is just the right age to start! |

molto veloce mama ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() my older daughter is 5 1/2 and LOVES running. she'd much rather run around the block than bike around the block (my 3 year old, however, wants to bike constant - well, trike constantly). there are lots of kids fun runs around here that are held in conjunction with 5k and 10k runs. the kids runs are usually a mile or less, sometimes 1/4 mile, 1k, etc. you could also have a tri in your backyard. we did!: http://www.fidean.net/wp/index.php/archives/2006/07/03/1st-annual-w... |

I'm so impressed by all of you with young children who still manage to find time to train for triathlons! I just started training 7 months ago, and ran my first sprint triathlon in early September. I had a great time and am now hooked! Your stories are quite motivating! |

What a great role model for being active and making it fun. Both our girls play soccer, do ballet and tap and love to ride their bikes and rollerblade. I guess now that we hear so much about childhood obesity, I just want to make sure my kids are active. I can't say they are the best at eating fruit and vegetables. They always have some on their plate, but I don't want to battle too much over food. I have enough of my own issues about food from growing up! Anyone have kids who are adopted? We adopted a baby boy last November. We had two on our own and then tried for a third, but were unsuccessful. Adoption has been an amazing experience for our family.Thanks again for sharing your info! This site has really gotten me motivated. I even did some strength training at home yesterday while my 5 year old cheered "Go mom, you can do it" and my 10 month old tried to crawl on top of me. |
