I'm registered and planning to do this as my one and only tri this season. Race reports from last year indicate water temps in the low-to-mid 70's. From the website it looks like most folks were wearing wetsuits. Hopefully the weather will be as nice this year as it was last year.

Yeah, to protect themselves from all the toxins and gross crap floating in the Potomac. Ew. Otherwise, I hear the bike and run are fast and flat. |

Yes we do. Maybe that should be a COJ poll. |

New user![]() | ![]() Too much Poo From the Loo! Potomac River news You can use. I mentioned this race to several friends and received too many concerned comments about water quality. A quick five minute search produced these stories in the last few days: Raw sewage spills into area waters with rain "Millions of gallons of raw sewage are dumped into the Anacostia River every year. The same thing happens on the Potomac River and Rock Creek every time there is a heavy rainstorm. " Toxic Algae Bloom Identified In Potomac River Tributary, Mattawoman Creek "Authorities said it can cause skin and gastrointestinal problems in humans, and can also be harmful to animals" Sewage Spill Reported In Four Mile Run Stream ARLINGTON, Va. -- Arlington residents are being told to avoid water in Four Mile Run stream downstream of a sewage spill at Westover Park near N. Kennebec Street and the bicycle trail along Interstate 66.
Arlington County learned of the spill at about 8 a.m. Thursday after a citizen reported a strange smell east of the trail. Hazmat responders discovered dozens of gallons of sewage and blue treatment product in the stream.
Office of Emergency Management officials said they think the spill may be the result of a portable lavatory operator emptying a tank into an overflow storm sewer drain instead of a sewer sanitary treatment drain.
Vacuum trucks are working to clean up the stream, which eventually flows into the Potomac River, county officials said. Cleanup is expected to be completed by Thursday afternoon.
Residents are advised not to fish in or have any contact with the waters – including wading or swimming – until further notice. By Juana Summers Special to washingtonpost.com Thursday, July 31, 2008; 11:19 AM
Arlington County officials have asked residents to avoid Four Mile Run following a Thursday morning sewage spill. The spill may have been intentional, according to a spokesman for the Arlington County Fire Department, which is investigating the incident. While Arlington police Detective Crystal L. Nosal calls the amount of sewage in the stream "very small," the county has asked residents to avoid fishing in or having direct contact with the waters until further notice. The spill took place near Westover Park, which sits to the southeast of the intersection of Washington Blvd. and Patrick Henry Dr. A citizen called county police after noting a chemical odor near the stream, according to Nosal. Much of the spill had been cleaned up by early Thursday afternoon, according to county Department of Environmental Services spokeswoman Diana Handy. The county's department suspects that sewage came from a portable lavatory truck, but no truck was present at the scene this morning. Four Mile Run stretches from Fairfax County through Arlington and Alexandria before emptying into the Potomac River south of National Airport. August 15, 2008 - 9:10amLA PLATA, Md. (AP) - Charles County officials are urging residents to stay away from water in the Potomac River and Mattawoman Creek that might be contaminated with toxic algae. The brightly colored blue-green algae is known as Microcystis aeruginosa. Authorities say it can cause skin and gastrointestinal problems in humans, and can also be harmful to animals. The algae has been reported in both Mattawoman Creek and the area of the Potomac near where the creek empties into it. Authorities say they plan further testing to determine the level of danger. Charles County spokesman Jason Lang says residents who come in contact with the algae should wash with fresh water and consult a doctor if skin irritation occurs.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If it makes you feel better, all of the locations mentioned in these stories are downstream from DC... Seriously, I participated in the General Smallwood tri this year and last which is held near Indianhead, MD and has the swim in the Potomac. No GI issues and no third eye growing out of my forehead yet. A story from 2007 said that the Potomac is at its toxic worst days after a heavy rain. So, hope for a dry week prior to the event and you're fine. Run and bike routes look spectacular! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The water is affected by runoff during heavy rains.. not accidents.. maybe we should start to do something about all the chemicals and pollution we live with everyday, instead of looking for news stories.. the river is fine and is a great swim.. just as long as all the junk we put on our beautiful lawns, or the junk that is on the roads and streets doesn't get washed into the water.. sorry to break it to you but that same runoff has to be dealt with in your drinking water.. |

But TBH I guarantee most rivers in populated areas in the US have the same issues and from the RD last year they test, test and re-test more than EPA standards. |

I am participating in it as a relay team, too! First tri for all three of us. We have a name but nobody ever asked us to write it in anywhere--any idea? |

This one is the closest real time water monitoring station to the south of DC. Guess it will all depend on when the next cold front goes through!
