Subject: Massive fertilizer plant explosion near Waco TX

Fertilizer plant explodes near Waco TX last night. 100s hurt, dozens feared dead.

That is a massive explosion. It registered as a 2.1 earthquake. Not a good week in the US...

(second video in the second link)

ETA: For those unfamiliar the OK City bombing was made using ANFO (essentially fertilizer and fuel oil).  This plant essentially had all the ingredients for a bomb.

ETA2: BTW I'm in no way suggesting this was anything other than a tragic accident. I'll leave the fearmongering to the media.

Terribly sad. A storm belt is blowing through the I35 corridor where West is located right now too. Chemical fire with water is usually bad right?

Most people have evacuated the town, but there are a whole lot of first responders out there.

Keep them in your prayers.

Depends on the chemical. In this case, I'd say water is a good thing as the power form of Ammonium Nitrate is unstable, but when wet, it makes decomposition much less likely.

Unless there's ancilliary fires like wood, electrical, fuel, etc. are burning.

YIKES, there have been 26 major accidents worldwide with Ammonium nitrate according to wiki.

Some nasty stuff.

DOT and other international agencies just banned 1-hydroxybenzotriazole from my line of work. It's a very useful reagent, but it too can be explosive when supplied as a dry powder.

I've seen a couple of lab scale accidents from azide explosives and they're only a gram or so in scale. My friend Mike still spits out shards of glass from his arms and shoulders. I can't imagine the devestation from the ton scale.

People reported feeling the explosion 80 miles away in south Dallas. Didnt know an explosion like that could be that strong.

West is a very popular town on the trek to/from Dallas. It's damn near half way between Dallas and Austin.

It's a VERY small town and a very tight knit community.

They are pretty famous for their kolache shops (it's a Czech community) and we regularly stop in on our trips. There has never been a time that we've stopped in to get some kolaches and not had to wait in line at least 20 minutes.

The local news covered it last night from about 9:00pm and were still going at midnight when I went to bed.

ETA2: BTW I'm in no way suggesting this was anything other than a tragic accident. I'll leave the fearmongering to the media.

A few notes:

1) Local media is reporting the explosion was 10-12 times as powerful as OKC. There was 54,000 lb of fertilizer at the plant.

2) It's not an exaggeration to say that 10% of the town was hurt and/or killed by this explosion. They're reporting 200+ injuries & 5-15 casualties thus far in a town of ~2600.

3) The media doesn't have to fear-monger, conspiracy nuts have beaten them to it. I saw a Youtube video this morning of an idiot with "proof" it was a missile strike.

If you live in Texas, blood donations are being requested. A significant portion of the DFW blood supply was taken by the charter bus crash last week, so they're running low.

A guys was videotaping it from his car.  It was just a fire and then the explosion hit.  It was incredible.  He appeared to be more than a safe distance away to film the fire but when the explosion hit, his son screamed to get away and that he couldn't hear.  It was insane and intense.

Blood banks are asking people to wait until next week because they have no time slots left to give this week. The response was so quick and overwhelming.

I've stopped in West a few times on my way north too Brad. There's another storage tank that hasn't blown yet. The firefighters and first responders are busting their butts right now in the pouring rain and high winds. Keep all those folks in your prayers.

Two of my best friends own a fertilizer company/plant here in Nebraska.  It's scary to think of the dangers of their products.  Heck, I was just out at the plant all weekend helping them hang up security cameras so this story also hits a little close to home for me.  :-/

I guess it's still to early in this incident for me to get the jokes.  The fire is still burning and they don't have a final body count.

Besides, Bulls--t would be terribly non-economical.  You can't keep bulls in the same area or they'll fight.  You can, however use cow manure or steer manure.
