Has anyone used a sleeveless under armour heat gear instead of a tritop? I was going to wear the UA under my wetsuit, but it looks like this weekend will be too warm for suits. Should i go shirtless on the swim or invest in a tri top?

Sure- works just fine. The heat gear is so thin it dries instantly (course, I guess it's designed to do that, right?). Mine fits pretty tight, so there was no drag to worry about in the water.

Good luck!

I wore the UnderArmour compression sleeveless this weekend in a sprint, including during the swim, with no problems.

It is a sprint... UA Heat Gear will be fine. If it is tight enough you won't have any drag issues for the swim. I train in UA stuff all the time and love it... My favorite is their metal stuff with the mesh like back. I even wear it on short rides <25miles instead of the bike jersery because I don't need to carry any gels.

Longer events... Go with the Tri-top. Mine has a pocket in the back for gels or what-not.

I feel the only reason to wear a tri top is for sun protection or if you are advertising.  Unless you are really hairy or wearing a skin suit, they can slow you down considerably in the water.

I used a cheap compression shirt in my first Tri this year and it worked great. Being my size it's harder to find good Tri gear that fits.

UA is fine, and don't go shirtless on the swim.  Go take a shower, and try putting on a tight-fitting shirt immediately when you get out of the shower.  Will take you forever.

Yeah at my last Tri there was a guy behind me in T1 cussing up a storm while trying to get his shirt on. lol

If you are going to use a compression shirt just wear it the whole time swim and all.

I was having many of the same questions - still new to this and don't want to order a tri suit or tri shorts off the web yet.  Not sure how they fit and haven't been able to find any in the local sporting goods store to try on, etc ...

So was wondering about other shorts, Champion makes a C9 series of shorts and shirts, bought some "running shorts" last night at Target, has a liner so probably okay to wear without underwear (learned that tid bit from the "Underwear" thread), and is made of "duo dry" material.

Not sure if this is the same chamois material I read that tri shorts have in them or not, or what exactly UA clothes are made out of.

So, I'm now thinking getting an UA shirt and use in the swim, bike, and run - can use this vs. a tri top (my first few swims will be in pools or inside so not worried about wetsuit yet).

Will these "running shorts" be okay for swim and bike also, or do I still need a tri short, or does UA also make some sort of short?

For the original poster, you asked about UA vs. a tri top.  What are you wearing for shorts?  Are you wearing it for all 3 events?

Thanks to all for your help and advice.

thanks for all the imput. I will be wearing a UA heatgear sleeveless shirt and tri-shorts for the whole race. I bought a pair of 2XU trishorts for $45 at bikesport and love them. I think for a sprint you could survive with just a jammer short, but i prefer the comfort of a trishort. It will depend on your bike position and seat as well.

Nope... not the same. Most tri-shorts have built in padding(chamois) that is like a bike short... but not as bulky due to the fact of it getting wet and the need to run in it.

So, I'm now thinking getting an UA shirt and use in the swim, bike, and run - can use this vs. a tri top (my first few swims will be in pools or inside so not worried about wetsuit yet).

I would say stick with your normal swim suit... or as the OP mentioned jammers. You won't really need the extra padding for a sprint. It is just a little more comfortable when you start getting into the longer distances.

The first couple of tris I did I wore jammers for the swim, put on a bike jersery in T1 and ran with both on for T2. Putting on the jersey just killed my transition times and I really had no need for the pockets in the jersey.

In a sprint and Oly, transitions are much more important time wise and as the other thread today states it is "free time". Wear the under armour during one of your pool swims... see if you notice the drag. If you don't just wear it for the swim, don't worry about changing clothes in transition and go.

Wore one during NJ State Sprint swim (no wet suits due to water temp), wasn’t tight enough had some drag. I would go shirt less next time.

I went shirtless at my first tri, and caught hell trying to put the Nike compression shirt on over my wet torso.  Bad, bad, bad....

Swim with it or ride w/out a shirt (ugh), would be my advice.  I just sucked it up and ordered a one-piece Pearl Izumi tri suit, so we'll see how it does in a couple of weeks.

As a side note if you are considering tri suit vs. tri top I would go with the top and tri short seperate.  It will give you more flexibility to train with, ie. use the tri top in a marathon, use the shorts for a swim.

Also I put on a nike compression shirt in T1 before I had the tri top...took about 1 second extra.  It was a bit overcast and I "thought" I would be cold coming out of the water so I figured a dry shirt might help.

Also, tri clothing tends to run small...if your ordering off the internet go for the up size if your a in between type. And many of the tri tops are designed as midrifs so if thats not your thing make sure you get a full lengther.

I highly recommend a pair of trishorts to wear.  The padding is just enough and swimming in them is so much quicker

Anybody tried swimming shirtless and then putting on a full zip sleeveless cycling jersey in T1 and wearing it through the run.  Would the full length zipper make getting it on easier?  Just looking for another alternative to the tri top.

X2

I was a little worried about biking without a shirt but it was fine in the tri I just did. And running without a shirt is fine too (for me- I prefer it to wearing any kind of shirt weather permitting). Is this your first race? I'd consider holding off buying too much gear until you get a feel for what you like. The one thing I would recommend though is a pair of tri shorts...they are so comfortable to swim, ride and run in and just save you a lot of worry/hassle in transition (i.e., "I already have my pants on- thats handy. Oh, and I don't need to put a shirt on either. Cool. Grab shades, helmet and number and get movin'". Now if you are uncomfortable cycling and/or running without a shirt, none of what I have written applies (except the tri shorts). Good luck.

Sprint = no shirt. Oly and longer a tri top for the pockets.
