Whoa! They screwed up the end of the season in an epic way, but firing Shanahan? Wowee...

What say you, Broncos fans? Good thing? Bad thing?

wow, you were quick with that post! The news just barely came out.

As a long time Bronco fan I say good riddance!  I actually like Shanahan and have defended him up until this season.  He had too much control over the team and it got to a point where I just could not stand listening to him at a press conference.  Sad, now he has to make a decision about leaving Denver and his 35 million dollar house the is currently under construction.    He had a good gig here but he wasn't performing...I would have fired him after the loss to Oakland!

ETA: I am surprised by the firing...Shanahan and Bowlen always seemed to have a very close relationship.  But i guess business is business.

Yep, any other coach in any other town would have been fired a couple years ago. Shanahan was much loved here, and that was deserved. But I agree with a previous post: He had too much control. I don't think our next coach will also have so much say in all the operations decisions, too. So ... Bill Cowher, Denver?

Wade Phillips was head coach for the Broncos after Dan Reeves was fired (around 1992?).  I had season tickets back then and those are some forgettable seasons.  We don't want to go back there!

Suprised, absolutely. Gotta be one of the toughest gigs out there. Its all win now. Look at the Ravens, Falcons, and Fish, they are all getting enormous praise for resurrecting franchises. Watch 2 of the 3 will be gone in a couple years.

Mangini was a geniuos two years ago and almost got an extension when they beat the Pats and Titans back to back 4 weeks ago and now gets fired cause they lose down the stretch.

As head coach Shanahan was responsible for all facets of team performance. That being said, he was a vicitm of a horribly inept defense and defensive coach, coupled with such an abnormally high number of injuries to running backs that the offense became one dimensional and easier to defend against. The team was really only mediocre all year. They should have lost 2 of the first 3 games instead of winning all 3. Special teams was also poor as the new kicker wasn't fit to carry Jason Elam's jock strap, let alone kick in crucial situations.

It was a blessing they were eliminated from the playoffs instead of being trounced by Indianapolis once again.

As bad as it was this year, I have to wonder if there is anyone out there who can do as good a job with the current players.

It will be interesting to see how many coaching positions pop up in the AFC West after the season.  We already know Denver and Oakland have vacancies; and here in KC we have a new GM coming on board (eventually?), so there's a good chance he'll want to make a coaching change up front.

Plus, I could see Norv Turner getting canned after the Colts beat the Bolts at home in a week or so.......

:D

you nailed it!  Shanahan had total contol of the team.  This wasn't forced upon him...it's what he wanted!  Yes, the defense was inept and there were injuries all over the team.  But how many defensive coordinators has Shanahan gone through?  The defense has been pretty lame for years and yet it just seemed to get worse.  I think there are a lot of coaches that could have gone 8/8 with the current roster.  He made some bad decisions while being one of the highest paid coaches in the NFL.  I could of seen keeping Shanahan if he would have been willing to hire a GM and give up some of his control over the team.  But my understanding is that was not acceptable.  I think Bowlen made the right decision.

Sticking with the Cowboys, Jimmy Johnson was basically pushed out.

I have to agree with you on this (except the part about being eliminated being a blessing... it's just embarrassing!). I was surprised that Shanahan got the boot when the players seemed like the problem. The defense was gawdawful, Cutler has never risen above mediocre (not a fan...), everyone that could run ended up injured. Maybe it is time for Shanahan to go, but I don't think all the blame can fall on him. The Broncos need a big shakeup for next season.

Denver resident but not a Broncos fan here. I am surprised they actually went through with it, but it was the right decision. I have never been able to figure out why everyone in this town is so in love with him. Any other coach would have been fired a couple seasons ago.

And Don Shula didn't really "retire" did he?  He was sorta pushed aside for Jimmy Johnson, wasn't he?  I also can't find if George Seifert resigned or was fired by the 49ers.

Hank Stram won 3 AFL Championships and one Super Bowl (and lost one) with the Chiefs, and was fired (again, I think) from the Chiefs.

I think Shula and Seifert were both "asked" to retire. I am not sure about Hank Stram.
