Extreme Veteran 474 Ocean City | Subject: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool So I started having Head aches in the back of my head in October followed by eye pain in december, Ended up in ER in January becuase I was getting dizzy and CT scan showed Bad sinus infection. I have been on antibiotics now for 30 days and am feeling better. 2 weeks ago I attempted to swim for the first time in a few weeks and I was having horrible dizziness the rest of the day. All the symptoms started the same time I started my indoor swimming this year, Am I wrong in thinking that the pool may have caused this infection??? |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool My guess is the pool did NOT cause the infection... I have heard of "swimmers" ear, if pool water is allowed to sit in the ear for long periods, but not sinus infections.. But I'm no doctor. I guess anything is possible. |

Expert 1019 Muncie, IN | Subject: RE: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool I ran out of Allegra D 5 days ago and have been sneezing ever since (waiting on mail-in prescription). I think my sinuses are BETTER (less runny, less sneezing) after I swim due to drying out the membranes via the clorine. |

Have you had pool water fill up your sinuses and take a while to drain, or done OWS any time before the infection? I'd suspect an ill-maintained hot tub long before I'd suspect a pool as a bacteria source. John |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool I've had the dizziness happen when I have a sinus infection many times. I get fluid building up in the eustachian tube and that makes me quite dizzy. I don't know that I've ever gotten a sinus infection from the pool before. |

Extreme Veteran 495 Denton | Subject: RE: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool I'm dealing with a nasty sinus infection right now as well : / I feel for you friend - though my guess would be that the pool is not the cause of the infection, unless you are allergic to chlorine. Bad sinus infections that stick around that long are, from what I've read, usually due to allergies. |

Extremely unlikely. A chlorinated pool is not an environment where bacteria can abnormally thrive. Plus, you're not breathing water into your sinuses like you do air. Bacteria is everywhere. Your nasal cilia stops some from getting into your sinuses, but not all. I'm not a doctor but I had a chronic sinus infection for 10 years. I was cured by two surgeries and moving out of North Texas (the sinus infection capital of the planet), to a dry, pollution-free climate. A normal person's nasal/sinus structure allows for perfect airflow through the sinuses so that bacteria can't survive and infect in those sinus tissues. Sinus tissue doesn't get a lot of blood flow, and is an environment where bacteria can thrive. They are therefore susceptible to infection without that airflow. All kinds of things can alter that airflow like allergies, illness, structure issues, nasal swelling, etc. Once sinuses get infected it's difficult to resolve because the lack of blood flow doesn't allow antibiotics to be very effective. Also, until recently there was no easy way to know exactly which bacteria is causing the infection so you can't target it with an optimal antibiotic. Edited by breckview 2009-03-04 10:42 PM |

Extreme Veteran 454 OKC | Subject: RE: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool Sinus infections suck.
I doubt it was the pool, you probably just aren't 100%. I had some type of virus last year that made swimming a nasty experience for several weeks after my main symptoms disappeared.
But more to the point: get some saline spray (or make your own), and use it (a lot) every time after you swim.

Expert 1074 Madison, MS | Subject: RE: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool A lot of people have said it's probably not the pool, but then go on to say it could be because of allergies. Well, if you're allergic to chlorine (like I am), it could, in fact, be the pool. Every time I swim, my nose and eyes start itching, my sinuses clog up, and I sneeze like crazy. It can last anywhere from a day or two to a whole week. I would imagine if the congestion was severe enough and did not clear out, you could definitely get a sinus infection. My reaction is mild enough that I can treat it with OTC and herbals. I also recommend flushing your nose out after you swim. There are those neti pots, and if you simply can't imagine water boarding yourself with one of those, Affrin just came out with a new saline spray. I plan to try that and see if it helps me. |

Pro 6011 Camp Hill, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool I've had sinus problems since I was a child. I've been off work the last 2 days with yet another sinus infection. They're bad enough that I run a fever and severe pressure/pain. Now I'm on Zithromax. Last year this time, it took 2 rounds of Z-packs and a round of Levaquin to shake it. I really hope that's not the case this time. My doctor says that they're especially common this time of year because of dry air causing the sinus tissue to dry out, forming cracks where bacteria can enter. I discussed the possibility of the pool causing it, and he thought is was very unlikely. His suggestion was using a saline nasal spray and a humidifier or vaporizer at home. |

It was not uncommon for me to have 2-3 a year for a few years. I guess what i am getting around to is that I never got one from swimming in a pool. As others have said I'm not a doctor but but I don't think it is the pool. 30 days of antibiotics?? Wow that must have been a horrible infection! Glad to hear you are feeling better. |

For 10 years I was on a cycle where my infection would peak about once a month. I'd run a low grade fever for 3-5 days with severe a sinus headache. I was on antibiotics so often it was crazy and even took one for a year. I'd recommend being very careful about humidifiers and vaporizers as they can basically put bacteria into the air if they are not cleaned religiously. For the poster who is allergic to chlorine. Any allergy that alters the airflow in sinuses (like a stufy nose) makes infection more likely so definitely yes on that possibility. |

Arrrgh story of my life for the past two months. I can't wait to move. Only 6 more months. Then my head won't feel like a balloon anymore. Doesn't exactly help training either when your body is constantly trying to fight off infection... |

Veteran 153 Northern VA | Subject: RE: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool Whenever I have a sinus infection I use Afrin few hours before I swim. That helps me with the dizzyness. I don't think swimmer's ear can cause sinus infections, since that is an outer ear infection and wouldn't make it past the eardrum to your eustation tubes (then to the sinuses). But the Afrin will also help open those up too. I also use alcohol in my ears after a swim to prevent swimmer's ear. |

I know a lot of docs and people think Afrin is horrible stuff but when you're all clogged up, opening those passages and getting airflow into the sinuses is really important and Afrin does it better than anything else. The problem is the rebound effect when it wears off. If you get into a cycle where you're using the Afrin every day, it destroys the cilia that's supposed to keep the bacteria out in the first place and makes your more prone to infection. |

Extreme Veteran 600 Indiana | Subject: RE: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool I'd say it's a possibility. A buddy of mine and I were trying flip turns.... you know how that can cause chlorine brain wash if you do them wrong (and we did ).......she came up with a horrible sinus infection just after that. She has not gone back into the water. Would a nose plug be too much to wear ?....... also maybe the ear is in play here like I've read too........ |

1 | Subject: RE: Bad Bad sinus infection, Now scared of the pool Yeah I think so that the unclean water of swimming pool might have caused your sinusitis go worse. I guess if you would had been a bit careful about the symptoms of the sinus then you could have avoided it from further increasing. Below are some preliminary symptoms of sinus: stuffy nose, headache, congestion, runny nose etc. Anyways there are a lot of natural remedies which you can use to treat it |
