Subject: Greetings from Chicago
Hi---
I don't want to be a "lurker" so I guess I should introduce myself - I've signed up for my very first sprint tri on July 25, and every time I lurk around reading the postings I get a bit nervous! I was going to do a training program through my gym, but it filled up too fast so now I'm on my own...everything is going pretty well, but I'm not so sure what to expect so we'll see how it goes! The advice I've read on the site has been fantastic and a great way to divert from what I'm supposed to be doing at work

Welcome. You are too right. This site is great for procrastinating while at work. I really wish I can turn it off and get done what needs to get done! Perhaps a 12 step program for beginner triathletes.........

Hi,

I give you credit for training on your own. It requires lots of self motivation.
Welcome to the group.

I train on my own, too -and live about 64 miles west of the Sears Tower!

Is your July tri, the one in Naperville? I'm signed up for that one.

Welcome to this site. I think it's saved my training more than once!

1) Thanks so much for the nice welcome words!
2) Andrea - Yes! I am doing the Naperville tri. That's cool - good luck! Do you happen to know where the swim will be? I've never been to Naperville...
3) A blonde redhead could indeed be a strawberry blonde, but my head has been many shades of red while being naturally blonde. Blonderedhead is also a pretty cool band.
4) Thanks for making me think of a refreshing micro-brew at 10 a.m.! That's not fair!

The swim for this triathlon is in the Centennial Beach Reservoir. I've only looked at it -haven't swum in it yet. But the water is very clear, which is nice. They set up lane markers, and the course is several out-and-backs, like a pool swim.

Thanks for the info about the swim, Andrea - it's good to know that the water is clear because I tried swimming with my eyes closed for about 5 seconds and failed that test miserably! I'd be up for meeting fellow Naperville racers - my mobility is kinda limited because I live in the city and don't have a car. At the very least we should meet up after the race and have celebratory cocktail

Hello all you Chicagoland triathloners!!! I did the Naperville race last year (my very first triathlon!!!) and I'm signed up again this year! Naperville is a great race, very well organized... all female, very good environment, very nurturing, encouraging, warm and fuzzy! Seriously.... a fantastic FIRST time experience. So great I'm doing it again... and again next year... and the year after that... God willing.

The swim is like a zig-zag thru-out Centennial beach swimming area. They start you out in heats and it is a bit crowded, so I recommend you stay to the side or rear of your heat, especially if you're not a strong swimmer. If you're a strong swimmer and can maintain, get right up front... there was some bumping and thrashing about, which surprised me, but I've found is to be expected in open water, mass starts.... The bike was very fast and flat. I did it on a mountain bike last year... looking forward to doing it on skinnier tires this year. The run was also flat. All finishers got medals. Your name is printed on your bib so people actually cheer for you by NAME as you round corners, pass by, and cross the finish line!!!

I did two other races last year, aside from Naperville, and I found that Naperville was by far the most well organized, and most well thought out. (It also had the best goodie bag!!!)

I would definitely be interested in "tri" ing to get together with you guys... I'm way up north in Crystal Lake. We could definitely plan on meeting the day before at the expo if you want!!! I'm in! I'm in!

Let me know... Good Luck to all of you!!!

Hey LW -
I'm so glad I read your posting. Today was one of those "Oh, dear - What did I sign up for?" days, and I feel much better knowing that the Naperville tri is well-organized and has a sweet goody bag! Do any of you know about the clinics that they offer before the race? They're not up on the website yet, and what worries me most about the whole thing are making smooth transitions (well, aside from getting kicked and punched during the swim). I figure that a little clinic would work out the kinks. I'm sure you guys understand since you're training solo too

OK, so it sounds like there are four of us doing the Naperville Tri. I think we should definitely plan to meet up at the Saturday Expo. Whizzer, since you've done it already maybe you can suggest a good place to meet? also, blondredhead, I bike T/R AM on Lake shore path, I would love an occasional training buddy if you're interested.

I'd be up for that.

And yes, I live close to Crystal Lake. In fact, I rode my bike there a few weeks ago. I live in Dekalb.

Are any of you guys doing the Bike the Drive thing in CHicago this coming weekend?

I'm not signed up for that bike thing this weekend...

The expo last year was a place where you could meet some famous female triathletes... Michellie Jones was there last year... I think there were others also, but I was oblivious. I didn't even know who Michellie was!!??!? She actually competed in the race too. I hope there's someone famous there this year... Now that I read IT and Triathlete, I actually know who these athletes are, and would definitely be interested in seeing/meeting them.

Aside from that, of course, there is a "course talk..." which basically outlines the course, shows you on a map how to exit the swim and then which route to take back to the Trans. area... and then where to exit, etc etc... There may have been some other "seminar" type things, but I didn't stay for them, as my sister had competed in this race twice before and told me I didn't need them! I kicked myself later, standing at the start of the swim...scared and nervous, for not learning more about what I was supposed to be doing here... so if there's something that looks/sounds interesting... we should plan to attend this year!!!  You also pick up your goodie bag (WOO WOO!) and Tshirt, and get your timing chip and body marking... There's also some vendors @ the expo... shoes, t-shirts, wetsuits, tri-suits, health food stuff, samples galore, fruit juice etc etc...I think we should be getting email updates from Reebok as the time grows closer....

I thought I remembered hearing that the expo was going to be in a different location than it was last year??? Let's wait to see exactly where it's going to be... then we can plan on meeting at a specified time near the area where they give the course talk? What do you all think?

Tell me more about yourselves...how/why did you get involved in this obsession  sport?

My sister and her husband dragged me, kicking and screaming to my first 5K... It took me something like 40 minutes to finish, but I was hooked. They both had already competed in several triathlons apiece, brother in law is a two time IRONMAN, and they encouraged me to start also... so I did, and here I am... I love what triathlon has done for my self confidence, it's given me a "hobby" and it's really taken my previously boring aerobics workouts to a whole new level!!! It's exercise with a goal.

OK I'm getting wordy. Have a great day, Chicago-girls!

Hi all,

I'm not able to make the Naperville triathlon (i'm heading to Toronto at that time) so I thought I'd do the Danksin Chicagoland one instead. I would love to train with you though as I am currently training on my own. Thanks!! Melissa ([email protected])

Hi, Melissa. I see that you're at my old stomping grounds in Hyde Park! The Chicago tri-ers really should get together. I'd suggest a group run, but I'm unimaginably bad at running and I don't want people to see that. So I tell them about it instead; THAT makes sense!

We could just meet at Jimmy's -assuming it's still there!

So there is a world outside of Hyde Park? Seriously? Sometimes it's hard to believe...

I would love to meet at Jimmy's sometime... for training? or to chat? I'm also able to meet elsewhere if people decide to train elsewhere in Chicago.
