Came across this article today in the Wall Street Journal.  Quite entertaining and I think I detect hostility, jealousy and pent-up aggression from the writer.  I wonder what he'd think of me grocery shopping in my Ironman Finisher jacket?

Would he like some cheese to go with that whine??

I did see the 0.0 sticker on a car though, and thought it was cute...

Wow. I'd love to hear what he has to say about cyclists. Usually the nasty remarks where I live are about bikes not obeying the laws or paying wheel tax.

What a tool.

So... runners run because they want people to look at them? Interesting. I must have missed that memo since I run on a rail trail through the woods. Oh wait.. I'm sure I'm thoroughly impressing the bunnies, squirrels and occasional deer that see me out there, that's what it's all about, afterall. This dude has an opinion, and that's fine, my opinion is that he needs a life. I see far more cars adorned with political bumper stickers, or the "stick figure" family stickers. What does that say about people... LOOK AT ME! I HAVE A HUSBAND, 2 BOYS, 1 GIRL, 1 DOG, 4 CATS, 6 FISH, 1 CHAMELEON AND A TRAINED ROACH!

Naw....he's just having some fun at our expense.....and at least some of it is deserved. Who cares? I got a good chuckle out of it, along with others, which I'm sure was the goal of his piece.

Most of my friends don't run, or even walk fast......they think we're stupid, or weird, or wasting our time.  Not a single one of them is jealous.......believe it.   You really don't want to know what my non running friends think of you when they see you wearing your IM finishers jacket at the grovery store.

I agree.  People get "offended" if other people don't like what they like.  Silly to waste energy on it.  BUT, also silly to write and article about it unless he needed SOMETHING to write about.

I could just as easily write "OK, you do crossfit/scuba dive/have a particular god/had a baby/love dogs/have an honor student kid - get over yourself".

Besides, it's only cool when you can put an 140.6 on your car!

That's funny.

BUT, what I hope ISN'T true, but most likely is, is his statement that a lot of runners got MAD at the WSJ article.  If you like running, why waste a second of energy getting angry about some tool who wrote some article about running?  I say, go out and run and cool off if that's the case.

I don't know.......it happens that I know a lot more people who don't run than people who do, and we're friends either way.  The people who don't run aren't angry....they just think we're funny, or stupid, or weird.  I'm ok with that.  I think the Runners World article just misses it.....maybe all the running affected his sense of humor.

My buds make fun of "sticker people" as a matter of sport. I don't put them on but I've got a drawer full of USAT, USA swimming, USA cycling, etc. stickers.....one day those boys are going to leave work and find that they have joined the club. LMAO

I guess most people don't spend their day in an environment where you can freely make fun of each other.....and everybody laughs.  I'm sorry.

I've got a guy working on making that into a sticker this morning.......I know a few folks who are going to be sporting them on their rides next week when they leave work.

When reading this article, I pictured in my mind a comedian, perhaps Jerry Seinfeld due to his ability to exaggerate any given point. You can take anything people love (tv watching, justin bieber fans, cycling, etc.) and do the exact same. Are they expected to not show their pride in their hobbies? Are they expected to come down to the author's level of self esteem and show excessive humility among peers to not appear to be flaunting?

When I read an article like this, it is easy to dismiss it as mouth diarrhea. But this is the internet, and everyone must have a retort. That's why I don't condone the 0.0 fat man sticker.

I agree 100%.  And, I also don't agree with the spirit in which the 0.0 fat main sticker is portrayed here..... the whole "that's about right" spirit is wrong.  It's all in fun, and there is PLENTY to make fun of on BOTH sides.  Still, my non-running, non-workout buds are going to be broke up laughing when they see it on their cars and trucks.

The original article is funny to me, it doesn't anger me in the slightest, he is just poking fun at runners, no big deal.

Heck every one of us at one point or another has said to ourselves in the middle of a run "why the heck am I doing this?"

I kind of agree with him on the oval sticker thing. I can understand the 26.2 I guess. The 70.3 is a big accomplishment for most and I might briefly consider the 140.6 myself once I earned it. But the 5k stickers and such are just a total joke. Either way I doubt I will ever put one of these stickers on my vehicle. I actually bought a 70.3 finisher sticker at my first HIM, after some thought decided against putting it on my car. I know I did the 70.3, I did it for me and I don't need a sticker on my car to prove it.

The runnersworld response was dumb. Way to take a funny article way too personally.

I honestly thought both stories are funny.  People must take themselves WAY too seriously.  Half the stuff to s/b/r seems silly TO ME, so I know it must seems even crazier to outsiders.  All that spandex?  COME ON.  Not the best look.  I can laugh at myself.  I think it's funny to hear jokes about it.

As for the stickers?  Is my 140.6 "bragging"?  Sure, but every once in a while, I do that and show my pride.

There was a time when all the "what *insert name here* say" videos where hot.  At least then people could make fun of themselves a little and know how silly they look.  (even though that got old too when EVERYONE was doing it and most were not very creative).

Oh em gee....  Most of the time if you think the article is garbage, the comments are even MORE idiotic (with the occasional insightful one thrown in).  I almost never read comments unless I need a reminder of how dump people can be.

I have my 140.6 sticker on my vehicle and it is staying on!

This writer got what he wanted out of the piece and that was his 15 minutes of fame. Enjoy it writer that I had never heard of before or doubt I will again!

I'd love to hear what the author thinks about my tattoo that's a smaller version of the 140.6 sticker! Of course I got it near my hipbone so, unless I'm wearing a bikini, no one can see it so I'm not exactly flaunting it...

Meanwhile, I definitely wouldn't say I got upset by this article. Initially, it just made me surprised since it had never occurred to me that anyone would be that bothered by those stickers and shirts. Then, I noticed someone in the comments compare it to those family stickers that a lot of people have and I realized that I've actually mentioned to friends that I personally don't like those. The point is, to each their own. It was probably a bit excessive for him to take the time to actually write an article about it, but hopefully he feels better now that he got it off his chest.
