Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Vitamins are normally unnecessary if you're eating a healthy, well-balanced diet. But, if you want to make expensive urine in colors not found in nature, GNC Ultra Mega for women or Mega Men Sport will get the job done. ![]() |

What aren't you getting in your diet? I knew this was going to come up ![]() I just started reading Food for Fitness, so I am working on the diet piece. I have always tried to make "good" choices, but as my IM training ramps up (and my appetite follows), I find that I am sluggish in the afternoons. I am also borderline anemic (normally). I remember taking vitamins before having my boys and they seemed to help with afternoon energy too. I really need a chef and a dietian to tell me exactly what to eat and when! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I started taking a generic multi-vitamin about a year and a half ago and I have noticed a real difference. I used to get colds four to six times a year. Since I started taking them I have only been sick twice and they were short lived. I am not one to eat healthy either. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I take Target brand prenatals. Not actively TTC but at least I have the folic acid in case of an oops. The vitamin is easy to swallow and doesn't upset my stomach like a lot of multi-vitamins do. |

Something you're eating for lunch is making you "crash" in the afternoon. Too many carbs at lunch, maybe? I've not read "food for Fitness" so I don't know what it calls for. I just know that if I eat carbs for lunch, I crash in the afternoon. Protein.... no worries. |

I used to get colds four to six times a year. Since I started taking them I have only been sick twice and they were short lived. I am not one to eat healthy either. I'm with you. I just finished my first Costco sized bottle of OneADay men's formula vitamins (9-month supply). I feel like I was sick less this past year than in several years. Is it the multi-vitamin? Who knows. But they don't cost that much. I know I get most of the vitamins I need from food as I generally eat healthy. But not always... And I don't track my vitamin intake from the food I eat, so I couldn't tell you I'm getting everything I need. By taking a multi-vitamin, I feel like make sure I get my daily intake, every day. Why not. I can't see a downside besides the remote chance I choke on the giant pill. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I highly suggest you AVOID GNC vitamins. There isn't anything wrong with them except they are jammed pack. Way more stuff then you need. It can be bad for your body to "overdose" on certain vitamins. I used to take them, but now that I'm eating better, I don't bother. |

For me it was too much iron. If you just need a little boost or a bit of insurance if you don't eat perfectly all the time, kids chewables are cheaper, tastier, and part of me thinks that since you chew them, you're more likely to get all the vitamins and minerals in them. I don't know if that's actually true. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It is recommended by the top doctors in the world that everyone needs a multi-vitamin, at a minimum. Our foods do not have enough vitamins and minerals in them to give our bodies what we need, and this is listed for normal to sedentary people, triathletes will certainly need more. The nutritionist I used said that I would need to eat enough to feed a 500 lb. man just to get the vitamins I need. She recommended GNC brand, apex, or one a day. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I do the Hannaford (grocery store) brand of OneADay for weight loss. I like that is has the extra energy-booster (without caffeine). I MUST take Vitamin D supplements. According to some studies, nearly every American is Vit D deficient. How did I find this out, you ask? Yeah, get hit with an auto-immune disorder thought to be caused by Vit D deficiency, and you jump on those vitamins real quick-like. In general, a nice normal multi-vitamin will almost never HURT you (unless you are already overdosing or close to ODing on other stuff). It's when you get into the 1000% of this and 2000% of that that things can go very wrong very quickly. And I SO x2 ya on the needing a chef and dietician to just do it all for me! :D |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I would not recommend to take any supplements except for a simple multi-vitamin (with minerals added). I try to eat really healthy and clean, but taking to my nutritionist (working with one of the local sports teams around here and really knowledgeable), athletes need higher volumes than the normal person and most of the time, the food we eat is processed to the point where the nutritional values are almost depleted... a simple multi-vitamin helps you perform to your ability and keeps you healthy. I do like Trader Joe's multi-vitamin. One a day is all I take (the can says two every morning, but that is more that you need if you have a good, balanced diet) |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My cardiologist has had me take Centrum Silver since my heart surgery eight years ago. 'Silver' because it is relatively low in vitamin K to reduce the effect on my Coumadin, plus because I'm old... Mark |

What aren't you getting in your diet? x2, lets face it, we don't know what the exact vitamin and mineral content totals of the food we eat, how much we lack at any given moment,or should we rely on top doctors from around the world or scare tactics from supplement companies. Do what makes you happy and don't expect any miracles that others claim! |

Given the fact that they are green (those are the ones right- or at least I remember the women's being green ?) and you're supposed to take one at least twice or three times a day- um yeah. I switched back to my cheaper Centrums one a day from Wal-Mart. Not only are they cheaper but they don't discolor my urine. I seriously think some of the GNC products (vitamins specifically) are nothing but a marketing ploy- they always have a more frequent dosage than the cheaper brands. So go figure- the more frequent you take them the quicker you go through the bottle hence the more bottles you have to buy. Huge rip off. I've never been one to get sick easily- guess I just inherited a robust immune system. I eat heatlhy but not sure how "balanced" it is- so I take a multi vitamin just in case. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I take a multivitamin for women that has a min of 400mg calcium, 15mg iron, 400IU vitmain D, whichever brand that's the cheapest, usually that would be the store's own brand. Hard to get recommended 1000mg calcium, 1000IU vitamin D, 18mg iron every day if you use sunscreen, don't eat diary or red meat every day. Edited by patricia7 2009-08-07 12:53 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Avoid vitamins that provide thousands of percentages of daily needs. Absorption site for most vitamins and minerals is relatively small and the excess amounts of the larger vitamins blocks the ones you are most likely lacking in. Flintstones vitamins are my staple. |
