Subject: Swearing off swearing challenge anyone?

Lately, I've been swearing a bit more than I'd like. I've never been a swearing person (at least not before I got married..hmmmm)

At some point, both my husband and I had crossed a line and began swearing in front of our son, to each other, etc... and I really don't like it. I'd rather use another phrase or vent with emotions that are not out of control with vulgarities.

So.. I'd like to minimize my swearing. The biggie is the F word. I really don't want my son to copy it while in preschool. And many other times I swear as a means of shooting my anger... if that makes sense and it needs to become a more appropriately handled means of expressing anger.

Anyone else game?

I would.  At the start of August, I said that my mid-summer resolution was going to be to not curse.

Then I started my current project at work.....

I am game.

I really try not to swear but sometimes, especially when around others that swear, I do.

Like you, I do not want to do this in front of my children as I think it is rude and vulgar and not something I would be proud of my children doing.

So, I'm in.

Thanks for the "push" in the right direction

I'm in....I start working with 4-6 year olds starting in December. It's really hard not to swear when you're trying to fit a crying 4 year old into a ski boot....

Ok, we can start off on the first of september. Not sure how to 'do' this but maybe we can inspire each other and check in on Friday's or Monday's to see how its going?!?! My DH suggested I start a money pot and put in X amount with each swear... I also think I may ask my son to hold me accountable. Maybe he can benefit by being the gatekeeper?!?

Any other suggestions or guidelines?

As I typed the thing about my son being the gatekeeper...I had images of a warden with a paddle ready to tan my behind with each swear. Then the scene from I think Animal House where a guy is getting paddled but with each smack he utters "thank you Sir, may I have another" ... Now that would be a bit too harsh

I always hear that a money pot is a good motivator.

But then again, if you really want a new tri-toy and want to "justify" your purchase you could just curse like a sailor until the jar is full and then buy your goodies!

I think if I get in this and put out a money pot that new bike will be here real soon... yikes.  My wife has given me the lecture... you don't want your sons first word to me @ssmunch do you?   Secretly I do... but as a responsible parent I cannot allow that to happen.  Especially since I know she'll be in line at the mall and he'll use it at a fellow shopper (probably deserving it) and she'll yell at me.

September 1st.. ok I'm in.  Maybe I can taper for that this week.

LOL!!! Haaaa..that is funny! Reminds me of my son ,3 at the time, while waiting in a crowded airport terminal. He had gotten some Skittles from his grandparents as we left but while he and I waited for our plane, he dropped most of them on the floor. I told him sorry charlie, can't eat em off the floor and suggested he sub pretzels I had... um, not a good idea and he let me know. He got all flustered and angry and started shaking the stroller with my coffee on it and his drink and simultaneously he yelled, "I WANT SKITTLES GOD DAMMIT!" oh... if only i could fit under the chairs...so yeah, good time to swear off swearing

well...not going as well as had hoped so far. BUT not to be discouraged completely either... i'm aware so have 'changed' out some words here and there. Doesn't quite have the impact but that is ok.

I'm telling lots of peeps what I'm doing so they can call me out too. My son is in on my mission too but he's a bit too strict because 'booty' is a naughty word to him. I say hogwash cuz to pirates booty is loot not someone's big caboose

It's tougher than most think.......

The money jar is a good idea, and it does work, sometimes. Here's another idea for those with kids who are a little older, have your kids call you out when you swear. My daughter is 22 this month and has done this for quite a few years now. Set a price and it's amazing what happens when they look at you and tell you you owe the kitty $1.25....

Doug

BTW, Count me in....

Ok getting by on this challenge.  I had a meeting with the director soooo I'll exclude my reaction to that.  I know it's working because I had a crash with a car and not one F-word!  Whoo hoo.

Great guys! Crash with cars? Ouch and holy ..... mmmm mmmm

I am doing better but still find I'm swearing (if only under my breath or to myself). So that still is not good and is full of bad vibes when I'm like that. Since drugs are not an option, deep breaths for those trying times seem to help somewhat.

Alright, I'm doing miserably

Not sure why but I seem to be doing worse this month than last!

What are you all doing to keep yourselves on track and what have you been doing to "penalize" yourselves?

I've enlisted my son as Trashy Mouth Policeman. He's pretty good about catching me AND he's even good about catching me in a 'bad attitude' and say "say it nice mommy" (wow and this is what I've been trying to teach him the last 3 mos!)

I haven't gone to penalizing stuff like cash or the like YET. I'm pretty good with carrying guilt and remorse as it is I just try to keep positive and say things like speak as you'd like to be spoken to etc..

I cut way down and it was very situational, until Saturday. I would have made a sailor blush with my string of swearing. I was in T1 at a race and someone moved my stuff and reversed my bike. I guess they wanted to be with their buddy on that side. As I was sorting out my stuff (yes they dumped them all into a single pile and all organization was lost), I was swearing loud and clear. Everyone in T1 around me was trying not to make eye contact as they were very uncomfortable.

Gained my composure, then felt like an idiot. So, I am back on the wagon.

LOL Captain! Oh, what a sight that must have been. But you are dang tootin'! I'd be swearing up a storm myself if someone had messed me up in transition.

I've only said a 4 letter word once, maybe 2 times this month...that's an improvement! My son (4) asks me daily what are bad words. Booty? no, Gdammit yes, f..., YES! Oh please don't let him repeat that at preschool!!!!

Hi VikingMom..yeah, technically it ended at the end of September.... it was more or less on an honors system and unfortunately, I swore too effin much BUT did make improvements and have recruited my DH because he's much worse than I am.

Sorry, being that i'm a sailor in the Navy it's kind of become my nature. This challenge would be to hard for me. Come up with an easier one and I'm there.
