Subject: Did i drink too much on my ride today?

Ok, did my longest ride this morning....30 miles.   I also had my new Aero Drink bottle and i wonder if i got too excited and drank too much during the ride.

For the ride, i had my bottle filled with Gu Gu2O.   I also had a 20 oz. water bottle filled with water to use for some Nuun if i needed it.   For breakfast and on the way to my ride (about an hour and a half) i drank approximately 30 ounces of water.

Before the ride i went to the restroom and took a pee.   At mile 15, i was done with the bottle of Gu2O that i was sipping on and i stopped long enough to refill the bottle with the Nuun.   I also took another pee break.   When i got to the end of my ride (30 miles) i was nearly done with the Nuun and i took yet another pee.

So i'm wondering if i took in too much fluids for a 30 mile ride....considering i pee'd that many times.   I was nervous about the distance so i wanted to be properly hydrated.   I wasn't feeling a full belly and never felt bad.   I actually felt really good and strong and was pleased with the ride.   But did i take in too much?

I'm worried for my Oly in 3 weeks about having to stop and pee so much.   I'd like to not have to stop at all.   Should i be hydrating differently?

How many ounces in the Aero bottle and how long did the ride take you?

to me it is kind of hard to say. Some people sweat like crazy. It is also temperature dependent. I've had rides where I drank more than you did and didn't pee at all as it was 97 degrees. Other rides where I drank half that amount but due to the fact it was 50 degress and raining, I was freezing, not sweating and pee'd what seemed like every 20 min 'cuz i drank too much early on trying to fend off being short on hydration......If you don't mind peeing on the bike, you can keep hydrating and not have to stop Seriously, it is a balancing act and you will learn what your body needs through experience...

ya, it was a bit humid this morning....i live in Central Florida so it's hot.

the literature says the bottle holds about 32 ounces i think, but i measured more close to 24 ounces or so.

when i stopped at mile 15 for a refill and pee, it took me 45 minutes.   and ya, i'm a sweat producing machine.

Best is to calculate how much you sweat to get an idea of how much fluid you need to replace.

Try this

Maybe learn to pee on your bike for your race?

So it sounds like you took in somewhere around 75 ounces for a 45 minute ride.  For me, that would be far too much.  Yes, I sweat and yes it's hot here but that would do me in.  I did a 4 hour ride on Sunday at around 90 degrees and drank around 100 ounces which was perfect.  Everyone is different but with the amount of peeing you did I'm guessing you could cut back significantly.

I can't recall ever having to pee on anything shorter than 50 miles. I can go through 80 oz. of fluid during a 40 mile ride and never leave the house with less than that, no matter what distance I plan on riding. We all sweat at different rates so don't use my consumption as a rule. Sounds like you did go a little overboard on hydrating. Try drinking 16 oz. before your ride instead of 30 for starters. Do a sweat rate test on yourself to see just what rate you "burn" water. Try building from that baseline to find the happy medium. Hopefully KathyG will chime in here and tell you exactly how to do the test as I recall her mentioning it in another thread. She is very helpful and would likely respond to a PM if you sent her one.

Never mind i see she posted while I was typing!!Cool

i didn't drink 75 ounces for 45 minutes, but 75 for the entire 1 hour and half.

xmann1102 - 2008-08-29 4:27 PM i didn't drink 75 ounces for 45 minutes, but 75 for the entire 1 hour and half.

But it was 45 minutes of exercise right? Or 90 minutes of exercise? I'm confused.  I pre-hydrate hours before (like I'm hydrating now for my 5:30 ride) but will only drink around 20 ounces for my 60 minute ride.  I won't pee on the ride at all.  BUT, as everyone has said, each person is very different and the sweat test is a good way to see how your body handles it.  But, I'm guessing as indicated by the frequency of urination that you could cut it back some.

Hot or not it sounds like too much fluid to me. Plus if you drink that much in the oly in may cause problems on the run. Running with a sloshing belly is not fun.

I did 34 miles a couple days ago. Started out with two 20 oz bottles of water, ended with a a bit more than one full bottle left.

You do need to fuel for the run after the bike, but IMO you drank too much - and all the peeing points to too much as well.

You hydrate before the ride, like the day(s) before, it has to be a constant thing when training, especially in the heat.  I would say you probably drank a bit too much based on the number of times you pee'd. However its the 30 oz in the car to the ride that was probably too much. You say you didn't feel a full belly, but did you try running afterward!  That's when you would know.

If I'm sweating a lot on a training ride, I'm at ~24 oz of fluids per hour tops, more like 18-20 or so.  My 2:45 ride 2 weeks ago I took in 48 oz, and could have used a bit more but not much. During an Oly race (1:15 ride or so) I'll usually take in about 20-24. I usually have a large (12-16oz) cup of coffee 2 hours beforehand and no more than 12-16 oz water in the hour before the race with 6-8 of that ~10-15 min before to wash down a gel.

Keep working at, and you'll find your intake niche, it'll take some time. Nice job on the ride BTW!

ya i was thinking it was a bit too much, probably the water on the ride over was a bit much.  will experiment and see what works better for me.

If you didn't puke, you can pee the rest out.  No really I think maybe a little more plain old water then all the electrolytes may have served you better.

Sounds like a lot to me....if you believe hammer nutrition it is generally better is slightly under hydrate as opposed to over hydrate. I'm a heavy sweater and I'd normally look to consume about 20 oz per hour on the bike (depending on heat/humidity).

Think about the shoes.

Hydration is dependant on so many different things, which were covered above: pre-workout hydration in the days and hours before, humidity, sun vs. no sun, time of day, caffeine consumption before the ride (it has a diuretic effect), and other things. Stopping to hit the head aside, how did you feel consuming that much? Would you be able to run after, or was it too much to run with?

O.k., I was actually just thinking about this question yesterday, but didn't have the balls to ask it...pee on the bike?

Pee during the run?

Do we really just keep on going & pee?  I guess if ya gotta go, ya gotta go!

Guys...I'm pretty cool - (no, don't take your cue from my pic...it's a professional head shot for my website) but DAMN - I'm supposed to just bike or run on by someone & let-er-rip?

New motto for Kim:

Don't Pee on ME!

Today I rode 47 miles.

Before the ride I probably only had 8-10oz of water.

During the ride I had 75oz of water and 25oz of gatorade.

I peed once and it was pretty yellow but that's probably because I haven't been hydrating as much as I should be. I didn't really have to go that bad but since I was off the bike for a few minutes I just went for the sake of going.

I think a big part of this is personal but if you have to get off the bike and pee then you're probably drinking too much. I think I drink too much but I haven't raced yet (I've got 4 coming up) and I haven't ran yet afterwards either. We'll see how I feel Saturday as I have my first BRICK.

You're probably WAY more experienced than me, but here goes:

Saturday I did my 1st real hard day:

10 miles bike

1/4 mile swim

10 miles bike

2.6 miles run

At the beginning of the run, I really thought I had to pee!  I could have sworn my bladder was going to burst.  I just switched my mind to something else.  By the time I got home, I only had about an ounce in my bladder.  I think it was just irritated by all the vibration.  My point is this - I think I'll hold it for a while...

but, I'm not doing an Ironman!!!

If I was...watch out...you might get a little wet...well, maybe not...you probably wouldn't be behind me!

I did my 2nd long ride of this training session Saturday, 50 miles. When I got up I had a banana with 16 oz water and 8 oz strong coffee, pee'd before I left.  We had a combination of weather for this ride; very warm & humid AM start to wind/clouds and a little rain mixed in with sun.  I consumed 48 Oz water during the ride  with a gel at the start, Power bar at 21 miles, and a gel at 35 miles.  I pee'd once at ~30miles. Tried to pee on the bike but it's hard to do when it's not raining!  So far all my successful POTB have been when it was raining.

I'd look more at what you ate/drank the night before and the morning of the ride. Yes, that's way to much peeing, but your body may have been trying to get rid of something as 30 ounces total is not a huge amount for 30 miles depending on the temps and intensity.

BTW, unless you ride super slow, you really shouldn't need any electrolyte replacement on that short of a ride. Some don't even need anything but water.

IMO you drank way too much.  Not that you couldn't drink that much, but your body can only process about 1.5 liters or so per hour.  The rest will just slosh around.  and it is compounded by the fact that you used energy drinks as most of that.  With simple glucose/fructose based drinks your body will only absorb about 6 - 8% carb. solutions.  The Gu20 is great for that, but with amount that you took in it just wasn't going to happen.

A 30 mile ride should not take you more than 2 hours or so.  1-1/2 for a faster ride for a training ride.  Even drinking 2 large bottles (which is over 40 oz.) an hour you would still only take in 80 oz. for two hours.  And that would be under a strenuous effort and constantly taking in fluids.

In an oly. I will bring one large bottle.  That's it.  40k takes a little bit over an hour on a rolling course, close to an hour on a flat course.  Even the slower riders finish the bike portion of an oly. in 1:30 or so.  If you have a bottle in transition you can take a drink after getting out of the water and after getting off the bike.

It is a personal thing of course as every person is different, but no matter what, your body can only absorb so much in a certain time period.  And remember, it is better to underhydrate than overhydrate.  Dehydration from excercise has never caused death.  Overhydration (of water) in exrtreme cases dilutes your blood salinity level and leads to hyponatremia which can lead to death.
