It is my goal to participate and complete my first sprint triathlon this summer and I am wanting to do this one as it happens to fall on my 30th birthday this year, July 26. I don't see it on this or any tri sites. If anyone has any experience past or present I would love to chat. (Not sure if this is an ideal 1st time race?) Thanks. Jo |

The only concern one might have is the swim start. It's a water start, and most likely you'll be in very deep water. The shore drops off quite quickly. However you could if one wished wait on the shore for the masses to start then follow after. The bike is a two loop course with one short (100m) steep hill. The rest is mostly flat. The run is a single loop through a park and some residential areas. And the breakfast afterwards is worth it alone! |

I think holding off on the shore is a great idea as I am not wanting to be in a big crowd in the water anyways. Is this a race where there are typically a fair amount of newbies? Or is it more of a competitive race? I feel like I'm going to be the only one that doesn't have a clue... Also do you know if there is a time limit on this tri as I'm expecting I might be the last one, hehehe. Thanks again. |

The new one, Mr. T's Turtle Head Tri, is on June 21st. I have not done either one but I've heard good things about the Kal Rats and Mr. T;s sounds like it will be small.
And of course, there's always the Apple... |

I would be aiming for the Apple as my first but being how the Peachland is on my 30th birthday (which scares the pants off of me) it feels kind of fated that I should do it to ring in a new year, decade, life... : ) |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There are a fair number of newbies at this race but also at these smaller venues you'll always see some very talented athletes who use the race as a tune up for a bigger event. Their presence goes mainly unnoticed. It is a very low key race.I encourage you to enter, you'll be glad you did. I am still undecided as to wether I'll sign up for this race but if I do I'll help you with orientation, etc. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Kelowna Girl! I haven't been in the lake yet, have you? Seems like it might be too cold, brrrrrr. I was thinking of joining this triathlon clinic at Fresh Air. Starts June 22 it is specifically to train for the Apple Triathlon. I thought it might be good for me as I'm stumbling through this tri stuff trying to figure it out on my own. It's on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings for 9 weeks cost is $130 I think. They will be doing lake swimming as well. I need all the help I can get. Have you ever done any clinics like this? I'm not really sure what to expect. |

I would recommend taking a clinic of some sort since they will inform you of all the things you need to know for training for, completing and feeling good about your first season of triathlon. I've participated in clinics as well - mostly at the Running room for running one and Kelowna cycle (they might have a beginner one check them out too). Now I train with Critical speed where a local coach makes a program and provides group workouts to those who want to come. Regardless.... What are you doing for training so far?? I saw the clinic listed at Fresh Air and thought it looked good. I have trouble fitting into other people's training schedules so I haven't done a clinic but I'm sure it would be VERY beneficial, especially if you're new to triathlon. I had an online coach for 10 weeks this spring and he was really helpful but I'm kind of happy to be back doing my own thing again because I'm usually pretty disciplined and I'm able to stick with my plan on my own anyway. I know Rob from Critical Speed and I've only heard great things from people who've been coached by him. Guess it's time to get in the lake soon! The past two weeks of heat MUST have warmed it up right? |

My training is: 3x week strength training 3x week biking 3x week running 3x week swimming I think I may be doing too much at this point as I have zero rest days? But I need to get everything in. I need to get out on my bike for some longer rides though. I'm using my mountain bike, put some road slicks on and just got some cages for my pedals but I'm having a hard time finding a saddle that works. This is really affecting me going out for long rides cause I'm so uncomfortable. It's not my butt that hurts but the other (if you know what I mean) I saw someone has an ad for a Selle Italia Lady Gel Flow Women's Bike Saddle - for $50, is this a good saddle/deal? Jolene |

Critical speed has a website if you want to check it out www.criticalspeed.com but that's the one centered in Calgary. rob has his own site at www.criticalperformace.ca I joined because I was training for a half iron and there wasn't a clinic, plus I was tired of cookie-cutter programs. When I go with a coach, I tell him my plans for races, my current lifestyle and availability to workout. He then makes the schedule based on my free time and goals. I go with the basic program and it also includes one fitness test which determines my accurate heart rate zones for either biking or running. When you are starting out the biggest thing you are vunerable to is burnout, injuries and too much, too soon, too fast. Having at least another person, even a fellow athlete, to reflect on your plans will help determine if what you are doing is right for you and your lifestyle. If you have a full time job that is very stressfull it may be hard for instance to sqeeze in two workouts in a day if you do that. In regards to your plan... 3x each sport is ok... but you're just starting out?? Perhaps just 2x each sport would be good but each workout should have a focus. Ei: Endurance bike, swim and run and interval bike, swim and run. The plans on here are also a great guideline to begin with as long as you choose one you can do. Try not to suddently increase your volume by a lot in one week. I've done that in the past and paid for it with exhaustion! Yes, you do need a rest day. As in a day with no workouts, just stretching, eating etc.... feel free to message on here for more ideas or whatever.. Cheers Heather |

Lay it all out in seperate groups (swim, bike, run) the day/night before the race. Get there early, early, early. You can rack your bike anywhere you want so look for a spot that's easy to find after the swim and bike and has good logisitics for getting in and out of transition. Don't be afraid to ask questions from others. Most are more than willing to help. Don't forget to write us a race report. Have fun! |

I also remember my first triathlon! *snerk* Jo, the most important thing for you to do (other than not forget your bike) is to breathe. Just relax, you've trained a ton, worked hard now it's time for the pay off. Don't let the excitement get the better of you. Take a look around while on the bike, smile while you run. If you don't enjoy yourself, you'll be all bummed out. Take everything in stride too, not every race is perfect, things can happen (flat tires, cramping, wrong directions from a volunteer, the list goes on and on...) so don't get upset if something does happen. Try to prepare for it, over come any issues then hammer a big sprint over the finish and revel when the announcer calls out our number! Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Woo Hoo!! I completed my first sprint triathlon!!! I'm pretty happy with my overall time as my goal was to finish in under 2 hours and my time was 1:49:56. Mind you I had a few set backs such as falling off my bike!!! Ugh, bailed on a turn about 6km into my 20km bike, fell on my elbow and knee. I wasn't sure for a split second if I was going to be able to finish ( I thought I had broken something in my arm) but all I wanted at that point was to finish and there was no way that was going to get taken away from me, so back on the bike I went... I also struggled with finding a rythym in my swim (google issues) I remembered what you all had told me, to enjoy it and have fun! That I did, had a huge smile on my face the whole way : ) Overall times: Swim: 22:12 Bike: 54:27 Run: 33:17 Total: 1:49:56 They did not have separate times for our transitions, the transition times are included in the affected discipline. |
