Since this was started by Captain 'boner himself, let's make this one the "OFFICIAL" poll, I'll even make it a "Sticky" so it will stay at the top. As Tania said, just the 'boners voting please. |

Elite Veteran 781 | Subject: RE: POLL: Charity for June Bike Lots Challenge - VOTE! Five response? Five? And you beat us? Jeesh. I have $25 burning a hole in my pocket. Just my opinon, but I think you need to declare and move on. We're now 7 days into the next challenge and I think that each day further from the challenge will be a day further away from giving. Not saying that we're backsliders, it is more a function of what is on our radar. My suggestion is to decide, post here and on the main forum your decision. I know whatever you decide will be a great choice. I just don't want to lose the momentum. |

Elite 3498 Chicago | Subject: RE: POLL: Charity for June Bike Lots Challenge - VOTE! I don't mean to annoy every one by restating my case yet another time. But for the benefit of the men who have not read the other threads: 1. My wife is an Aplatic Anemia survivor, a rare and deadly bone marrow disease. 2. Aplastic Anemia Foundation has made INCREDIBLE progress in finding a cure and since just 1983, funded research that has reduced the mortality rate from 80% down to 30% ! 3. Rare diseases like this one do not have the resources for research like cancer or diabetes. (No Lance Armstrong or Team in Training raising millions each year and pharmaceutical companies just can't justify the R&D costs) 4. 100% of the money that goes towards research to Aplastic Anemia goes into a special account and NO administrative costs are taken out. Not even Livestrong or TNT can say that! Please consider. Thank you. Edited by Steve- 2005-07-08 8:42 AM |

Elite Veteran 781 | Subject: RE: POLL: Charity for June Bike Lots Challenge - VOTE! I have no vote and I have no say in the matter; I'll send my check where you all decide. However, comma, I've been thinking a lot about this. Please don't ask me why 'cuz I don't know. I'm too lazy to go back and check the thread but I thought we originally started the charity challenge to give to BT members who are swimming/biking/running for a particular charity. I'm not aware of anybody here who has linked to St Judes. There are thousands of worthwhile causes. I know that. I don't want to debate the merits of various charities. But we won't make any real impact to the St Judes' pledge drive, just as we won't make any real impact to Livestrong. We also won't be bucking up a BT member who has pledged to raise a certain amount of $$ for his or her particular cause. Here in Shreveport, St Jude's is raffling off a house at $100 a ticket. Do you think that $500-600 BT sends will make much of a difference? I don't. I guess this is turning into a plea to fully consider Steve's request to give to the charity he supports. I've personally given, but it sounds like a BT infusion could make a real difference in the charity's coffers. I think Steve has been a real asset to BT--I've learned a lot from him and his experiences with his coach--so I ask that whoever reads this to consider his cause. To Motivated, I'm sorry if I've overstepped my bounds (and I probably have). St Jude's is a wonderful cause; I'm just hoping to make my contribution more significant than a 1/4 share in a raffle ticket and I want to support our BT members who've made actual pledges and are working tomake them happen. Just my Friday night thoughts. Edited by lynda 2005-07-08 7:05 PM |

I'm not aware of anybody here who has linked to St Judes. I "created" the rules (with a lot of input from others), but only suggested that we follow my rule of supporting a BTer racing for a particular charity: the bear - 2005-06-04 5:01 PM The two teams, through their captains, will each designate a single beneficiary charity. The losing team will make donations to the charity selected by the winning team. I would recommend using last month’s guidelines in selecting a charity:
but at a minimum limit it to a nationally known organization that takes online donations. Regardless, go back and read Karl's lead post in this thread. If you follow his link there, you will see he is doing IMFL f/b/o St. Judes. The charity that doesn't meet my suggestion is Livestrong, but again, it was a suggestion, not a mandate. By the original rule, it's up to Karl to decide on (or decide how we pick) a charity. lynda - 2005-07-08 6:03 PM I guess this is turning into a plea to fully consider Steve's request to give to the charity he supports. Can't disagree with any of this, but the same can be said for any of the three individuals up there: Steve, Karl and Frank are all "real assets to BT," we've learned a lot from all of them, great guys, great charities, yada yada. Doesn't make the decision any easier IMHO. The vote thus far reflects the difficulty at as well. I'm just musing on a Friday night because I'm leaving tomorrow morning for a tri and my husband gets back home tomorrow night. I'm sure that the cause you all select will be happy with the BT infusion. I'm just feeling the Steve love. I think I started my post by saying that I was overstepping my bounds, and I was. And, duh! Of course I can give to all of the charities selected. *Should have thought of that before my post.* P.S. How are you doing with respect to Dennis? If you and your family need a placed to stay, head for Barksdale. We even take dogs and cats and eight year old twins. Edited by lynda 2005-07-08 8:08 PM |

Master 2447 Marietta, Ga | Subject: RE: POLL: Charity for June Bike Lots Challenge - VOTE! As Team Captain of the Victorious Testosterbones (probably the last time I'll be writing that), I hereby decree that there are three Charities to which donations should be directed by the courageous Gear Goddesses. Those charities are:
To access the contribution pages, just click on the links under our signature on any particular post. For me, that will take you directly to my page at St. Judes. As a footnote, 100% of your donation is going directly to St. Jude. By the way, Lynda, not to take away from anyone else's cause, but I probably would have felt the same way as you had I not spend time at this facility (as a vendor). Its an incredible mission and it is emotionally overwhelming to walk through the halls and see all the children with these horrendous diseases. I feel great about having an impact on this awesome organization. Edited by Motivated 2005-07-09 7:58 AM |

Master 2233 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: POLL: Charity for June Bike Lots Challenge - VOTE! As I said above, I voted for Steve - because he has a big fundraising goal and his event hasn't happened yet and the charity that he's fundrasing for doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves. Having typed that, I want to clarify a few things about my LLS fundraiser... One of the reasons I picked the event that I did was because I wanted to be able to cover the "administrative" costs (with TnT it's typically 25% of the participant's fundraising goal) myself and still have some money left over to donate to the charity. It was a local race and it was what I could afford at the time. I like to keep everything above board and I feel better knowing that when someone donates to a charity that I am representing, that the money they donate goes there, not to help me take a trip somewhere - so if any of you decide to donate to LLS on my behalf, it does all go there. A few weeks after my TnT event, my wife was diagnosed with Leukemia (ALL), so that is why I will continue to do fundraising events for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. The event I have picked for next year isn't a typical TnT event (The Canadian Half in Ottawa, ON - dang, did I just type 1/2 IM out loud?), so all of the expenses for that event will be covered by me so that the funds I raise will go directly to LLS. While I would encourage you to donate to Steve's fundraiser this time around, if you want to donate to mine, you can find it here: (sorry, I haven't had a chance to update my fundraising page yet...) http://www.active.com/donations/fundraise_public.cfm?key=tntcpaFApo... -Frank |

Elite Veteran 781 | Subject: RE: POLL: Charity for June Bike Lots Challenge - VOTE! Personally, I'm giving to all three charities. I never meant to start a one versus another post, but in retrospect, I can see how that came off. Bottom line--not good. But I am thrilled to give to the causes you care about. Great job for winning the challenge, and great job for being advocates for the causes you support. Mi chapeau. Edited by lynda 2005-07-10 8:37 PM |
