Subject: Prostate cancer.......
On August 14, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Well into my training for the Marine Corps Marathon, I hit a wall I could not overcome. Disbelief, shock, panic, dread, sadness, darkness, despair, depression, hopelessness, mortality.

I came to realize that there are greater challenges in life than crossing a finishing line.

Nonetheless, today, for the first time in weeks, I put on my shoes, and I ran.

Good job getting out there.

In January, my 3 year old son was diagnosed with cancer.  I was in the middle of training for my first half marathon and hit the same wall you did.  You are very right that there are so many things more important than finish lines.

Sending you lots of healing thoughts from Canada.  Be strong.

It sounds like you are overcoming by getting back to what you love doing. Hang in there. It is a tough thing to go through but is very treatable. Keep positive.

Congrats on the run today. Keep a positive attitude.

My father had PC two years ago and after treatment and surgery has been 100% for some time now. As mentioned previously, great strides have been made.

You'll beat this!

Its a scary word, but I found out last year when I was diagnosed that there are tons of ways for treatment, which I didn't have to go through that much and wasn't scary at all now that I'm through it.  I did the same thing you did... I started biking, and of course, like many, found myself here.  Wonderful site with tons of support in anything you do.  The training took my mind off it.  If you need anything at all, please pm me.

and no, that is not me in the avatar.  lol.

My dad just finished very aggressive treatment for advanced prostate cancer.  He is not a Biker or Triathlete and considers this an awesome book.  Check it out.

Rex,

Good for you getting back out and running.  What is the doctors plan to treat your cancer?

Thank you, all of you, for your kind words.

I have consultations this month with the two finest prostate cancer surgeons in the world, Dr. Walsh at Johns Hopkins and Dr. Catalona at Northwestern. Both have performed over 5,000 prostatectomies, and developed the nerve sparing surgical technique that is state of the art today.

I could not be in finer hands than with either of these two physicians.

There was an article in the Journal of Clinical Oncology that was released yesterday that you might be interested in.

There are many options for the treatment of prostate cancer.  Did you ever serve in the military?  There are certain benefits available depending on your service.  I have worked with prostate cancer for many years.  Please pm me if you want any info.  Keep living and enjoying life.  Never let cancer win!  My prayers are with you.

You can beat this!  Its a good thing that you were training when this hit so your body can handle the treatments better.  I was diagnosed with cancer 14 years ago and was at my best fitness level ever and it sure helped.  Hang in there.  If you have any questions or just need a friendly word from someone whose been there then put out another thread or send any of us a PM (there are a lot of us) and we'll be glad to do whatever we can for you.  This is a great group. You live in an area with some great doctors so count your blessings.  In other parts of the country (or world) you could have gone forever without the doctor even realizing what was happening or not have facilities to treat it.  Keep you head up and keep going.
