Kind of.  Lots of the elite runners aren't really that tall.  Google search "do taller runners have an advantage" and you'll find several articles on it.  Basically it has to do with stride length and efficiency and the amount of energy it takes to move a bigger body the same difference.

I doubt that taller runners have an advantage.

I think its more of the ''turnover rate'' that the lenght of the stride.
sure when you are an elite it might make a difference. but mere mortals like me. nope.

it takes longer for taller runners to turn their legs over. . being short as well - I have outran plenty of guys that are 6 foot to 6'6"  (I am about 5'6").  I have also been outran by all shapes and sizes.

Running is all relative - you start where ever your ability is and get better from there.  Who cares if shorter or taller people have an advantage - height is not something we can change.  I try to focus on the things I CAN control

Really...hmmm...I am going to look this up. I guess if someone is taller, they would have to move their body with the same exertion as me...all things being equal. I guess I just want to whine.

Say that to the 4'10'' woman who passed me during my half marathon. I spent extra energy trying to keep up, but she was too quick.

I'm 5'10".  Goggs is like 5' even.  He is WAY faster than me.

You get faster when you run lots, do track workouts, run for a long time.  I'm faster than I used to be - same height.

I was thinking today...as I went for a run with my daughter...and I've gone with my husband before as well...and while I'm getting faster, I think it's unfair for shorties to have to run against taller people with larger strides, in the same races. Okay, I'm whining, bear with me. lol I jogged today, and threw in three sprints...fastest I could go, and at that pace, my daughter said it was harder to keep up with me. I know, I'm still getting back into the swing of running after being on hiatus for so long, but still...I really wonder if this idea could take off. I'm sure I'm not the only woman under 5'4'' who feels this way! I could start a new trend...races for shorter people only. At least then, if someone is faster than me, they are my size...and don't have this huge stride...it's hard to keep up with people who have larger strides.

Do you think my idea is lame? Undecided

Just keep on pushing through your workouts.  the days will get better, you will get faster, and your confidence in your abilities as a (runner, biker, swimmer) will increase.  It sounds like a slight confidence problem.  No worries, keep your chin up and keep your eyes on the prize.  Always keep moving forward.

I was imagining some sort of "inverse steeplechase" where you have to do things like run UNDER barriers, etc.

lol I guess I am just feeling...I dunno...like I've lost all the momentum I had built a few years back before my foot injury...and now, having to work back to the speed I once had, it just upsets me sometimes. I know it shouldn't. My height is an easy thing to blame...Undecided

I admit I did giggle when I saw your post. lol

I hear you loud and clear.  For me, I have to work harder on the mental aspect of running more than the physical.  I can talk myself into or out of more so I have to work hard at that.  There are great things still left in these bodies, we just have to tap into it and bring it to the surface.

To some extent, you can't control injuries.  All you can do is learn from them, and learn  your body.  My knee gave me issues from the end of december of 2009 up through about March.  I was excited to use the awesome running fitness I had built up all fall to PR a couple races in March and May.  However, I basically had to stop running.  It is frustrating, but I learned that I shouldn't do a hard race 3 weeks after my first marathon.

There will always be excuses to latch onto.  In reality, it is all about enjoying the journey and getting better.  Sure, my run fitness and endurance sucks right now compared to where it was, but as I keep my consistency up, I am noticing that I am getting stronger, feeling better, and enjoying it more!

And since no one else has said it, HTFU!
