Subject: Am I turning into an old fogey?

I'm 44 but my wife has always told me my maturity level was equivalent to a 12 year old. However, recent events have made me question whether I'm turning into an old fogey.  I've always enjoyed your basic juvenile movie such as Animal House, Porkies, anything by Mel Brooks, etc. and even recently I loved Dodge Ball and Old School.  So, I had been looking forward to seeing Wedding Crashers and The Forty Year Old Virgin.  Well, I was very disappointed in both movies.  They were alright but no where close to being as good as Caddyshack or Young Frankenstein.   I thought both movies tried to use either profanity or stupid situations to make up for a lack of humor and plot.   These aren't the first two movies of this type that received good reviews and then when I saw them was disappointed.  Ron Burgundy and Napolean Dynomite had to be two of the worst movies I've seen in the last year (I know that I'm going to get stoned for that comment).

Does this mean that I'm finally reaching adult hood or fogeyhood?  Will I soon be driving 45 MPH in the left lane with the blinker on, eating dinner at 4:30 and buying blazers in colors that can't be found in nature?  Soon I'll be saying, "Those dang kids" and being the bad guy in Scoopy Doo cartoons.

I'm seriously considering desparate measures.   Yes, a red convertable, dying my hair blond and getting something pierced.   I would have made this a poll but I already know when to go to the bathroom.  I justed wanted to share my problems with impending middle age.

ERnie

If it helps, I've been an old fogey for 25 years (give or take) and am only 41.

 I'm in bed before 10

A day does not go by that I'm not monitoring my HR

I worry about my nutrition

I consume pureed fruit daily

I'm at the pool in the middle of the day

Holy crap....I'm ancient!

lol, really. Wait till you're watching something historic and you turn to kids/guest/etc and say, "well as I recall it happened........."

My recent favorite old fogey comment was during the holidays when my 9 y/o neice asked, "Uncle Russell what was it like to open your presents on Christmas morning to discover things likes wooden blocks or writing paper". I knocked her out.

Black socks with sandals, the condo in Florida and plaid jackets are next

Hey!  Enough already!

Welcome to Fogey-ville, pop:  inf.  I thought all of the above movies were funny, for their time.  And as I get fogey-er (vortmax - that's a word - I swear) monitoring HR, watching the diet, the sillier the movie - the better.  That Ben Stiller - he's such a card!

And if you are considering a move to Florida - buy a map!  I'm changing my name to " 'Scuse-me."  I'm tired of giving directions!  Wink

This isn't far from the truth.  The Kennedy assassination for example, or watching the first moon landing.

But when I move to Florida, I am NOT wearing black socks and sandals!

I hated Anchorman the Legend of Ron Burgandy the first time I saw it, but now routinely stay at it for a while when it is on cable and enjoy some of the parts.  Old Skool I found overhyped and lame.

I too have found myself seeing a movie and feeling the profanity is forced for effect, but that isnt so much fogeyism as it is recognizing a weak script.  Dont get me wrong cuz I can cuss with the best of em, darn tootin'!  I feel old when I am called 'sir' at the store by a clerk.  I am only freakin 33.

I can echo the sentiments on bed time.  Last New Year, we were in bed by 10 (we have young kids).  I was awaken at midnight by the sound of fireworks by the neighborhood whippersnappers.  As I was in a deep sleep, I mosied over to the window in a huff to check what all the ruckus was.  Man did I feel like a codger when I realized what I was getting upset about.

So long as you can act immature in other ways, I think you are ok, but then again I could be biased as I may be trying to deny my decent into being a fogey.

Well, I'm only 26 and my friends call me an old fogey. Probably because I rarely go out and if I do, I'm ready to go home by 10:30

I LOVE Anchorman and Naploean Dynamite, and Old School and Wedding Crashers were pretty funny. The first time I saw Anchorman and Napolean Dynamite, I thought they were the two most pointless movies I'd ever seen. They grow on you though.

I agree, Napolean Dynamite was not that good the first time, but it was alot better the next time. I am 30yrs young but feel like an old fogey too. The stonewashed jeans, Def Lepard shirt and the feather hair needs to go. I am looking for an extreme makeover, lol.

Heeeey... I love Def Leppard! Keep the shirt, or give it to me

Not to bring you down but I was joking. Though some old Lepard is cool.

You're so silly. The only song I like is 'Pour Some Sugar on Me.' And I'm glad you don't have feathered hair. It is a cool look though....should I get mine feathered?

You get your har feathered....hell no. I never liked that look even whe it was in. Then again who am I the damn fashion police.

Or of course there is the option that possibly these movies were just crap?

No those movies were funny.

Hey what does age have to do with it? I'll be turning 60 this summer and still haven't figured out what I want to do when I grow up. I'm planning my first Tri in May and I actually get a kick out of letting the blinker on longer then needed, it drives my 41 year old wife crazy. but my 12, 15 & 17 year olds love it.
