That's exactly what I thought when I saw this story yesterday.

As for W., hooray! he did his job! This announcement yesterday struck me as grandstanding a little. Like tooting your horn for doing what your supposed to do in the first place. But is it a good thing? Of course.

yea I thought so too a little, but...  With the current state of the media, no one would have picked it up and run with it.  They would have found some other more tragic (read: negative) event to focus their attention on.  So what they did was pretty much the only way to get the word out.

What bothers me is the timing -

I fundamentally distrust them man as I believe he has zero ethics. I question his timing to release "more" information.  This happened a long time ago. Sounds to me like they are trying to move his baseline popularity up a notch above "despized" going into congressional elections - If the republicans lose control of congress, Bush will likely face impeachment trials. My guess is we will start hearing about any successes to justify this trillion dollar police action against Al Quedea, Iraq and US citizens. After all, every one of these Congressmen facing election voted and supported what is happeneing in Iraq. I would not be at all surprized to see the warning system come back and start the alert elevation warnings again to sucker the dull-witted into thinking that only Gdub and his band of corrupt gentlemen can save us.

The timing isn't to help with the elections. Its to distract attention from the domestic spying now that more and more people (especially repubs in congress) are questioning its legality and calling for an investigation.

Sad thing is, I think you're right. I wouldn't be surprised either to see the "terror alert" get raised over the summer which depresses me because I hate being so cynical.

The press actually called them on it yesterday, asking something like "Isn't it a coincidence that your releasing details about the plot right now? Was the plot foiled by information from the warrantless spying?" They couldn't say whether the warrentless spying gave them the info - so basically - no, it had nothing to do with discovering this plot.

Relax my friend, just a little satire comparing dubya to Superman. But since you brought it up, show me where dubya or any action initiated by him foiled this plot and I'll write a glowing report showering him with praise.

Yay.....Dubya did his job.......and then announced it over 3 years later when he's in the middle of what could become a significant domestic scandal.

And did anybody note the supposed plan? From the Whitehouse web page:

"a plan to have terrorist operatives hijack an airplane using shoe bombs to breach the cockpit door, and fly the plane into the tallest building on the West Coast."

Sorry, in 2002 (or any point for the forseeable future), there's no way you could hijack a plane with shoe bombs or with anything else, for that matter. Too many people on board know what the likely outcome would be. You might be able to bring a plane down, but you're not going to gain control using the threat of blowing it up.

Ok, I just gotta say that this IS something Bush should get credit for, and no, I'm not being sarcastic. It sounds like this plot was stopped before it even got out of the talking phase mainly by increased cooperation between our intelligence services and other countries and this increased coorperation is due to Bush. Oh course I think whoever was in the White House after 9/11 would have taken this obvious step but that doesn't take away from the fact that he did it.

Pretty big coincidence that he just feels like talking about it now though...

Looks like there wasn't much to breakup and I'm giving a little too much credit. Just found this:

"several U.S. intelligence officials played down the relative importance of the alleged plot and attributed the timing of Bush's speech to politics. The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they did not want to publicly criticize the White House, said there is deep disagreement within the intelligence community over the seriousness of the Library Tower scheme and whether it was ever much more than talk.

"One intelligence official said nothing has changed to precipitate the release of more information on the case. The official attributed the move to the administration's desire to justify its efforts in the face of criticism of the domestic surveillance program, which has no connection to the incident."

yea, did you all cry foul when clinton bombed afganistan during the lewinsky thing? (let alone blamed him for not killing UBL? We have mrs. clinton bagging on bush for not getting him, when THEY did nothing..... ) or is it just conventiant to be so bothered by timing? its politics, and every politician plays the game.

The dems need to change their platform from "bush sucks" to something else.

Oh I dunno, I think "bush sux" is basic enough, but since Republicans are now unable to discuss their president without invoking Clinton's name into it, just maybe they (the dems) could soften it a little. How about this slogan  "Dubya/Monica: Common ground"
Same result but it's said in a kinder, gentler manner.

btw I was a baseball game last night and I personally cried "foul" several times. (tic)

I'm not a dem and someone who feels the need to clasify all those opposed to Bush as dems is a fervent Bush supporter or ignorant and non too smart. In either case, how do you know what my position on Clinton or afganistan is/was? There are Republicans I'd vote for over democrats. Your "arguement" is usless, ignorant and not too bright.

Thast just the point. Nothing has changed for Bush to release the info now except for bad poll numbers, so it is just politics. You hit it on the head.

As far as Clinton going after OBL to distract from Lewinsky, I think we've had this debate already. But are you trying to say that Clinton just went after OBL to distract from Lewinsky so he shouldn't have gone after OBL or that he should have waited to go after OBL so it wasn't seen as politics and just a way to distract from the Lewinsky scandle? I'm confused.

The repubs need to change their platform from "Clinton sucks" to something else.

so yeah i understand, there are many americans that dont like him. okay fine. he cant be reelected. get the hell over it! i pisses me off to see the dems (i use it loosly speaking the majority of bush haters) sould stop bashing him, and REALLY go after winning elections. the fact that bush won this past election is such a sad state for the democratic party!

my point about clinton was that he launched cruise missles (no international UN conversations) into afganistan when he had a bad political climate. MY POINT IS: THEY ARE POLITICANS, THIS IS WHAT THEY DO! they play political games, it seems like its okay to indict him for being a politician! Gov. Gray Davis (California who was recalled, [since u dont want to hear clinton]) when he was in trouble he kept talking about all the "great" things he had done for the state; which he was advised by a past president who knows how to work politics.... his name... was..... uhh. my point is: these people are politicns, they play polical games!

They were filming a 9/11 movie in DT LA and it was freaky Bc it looked like 9/11 they had people throwing papers off the tops of the buldings. it looked REAL. made me a little worried to work in DT LA, hten again i passed through LAX at the time that terrorists had planned to blow it up, and it was stopped. The point of pointing out this political game is not to "bash" him for playing political games, because yup, they all do it, but to point out that we shouldn't be distracted by this shiny toy.

BTW, I don't know if this is what you're trying to say, but I always hate it when people complain about bashing Bush as if we shouldn't ever say anything bad about him. As if any criticism is just bashing him out of hatred and could never be legitimate. For sure there are people who do bash him out of hatred, but they're easy to spot because they have nothihng to back up their argument. Just like the people who blindly defend every little thing he does. And yes, this also applies to Clinton. This whole polarization thing just sucks.

That 9/11 thing is freaky. Do you work down there? I would not like to look out my window at work and see that scene, even if it is just a movie.
