Recovering from 30% of my meniscus being removed...will be ready to try running in a couple of more weeks.

Please tell me you are missing lots of your meniscus and can run without pain or problems. (If you can't- please don't tell me...just kidding)

Thanks!

Check out Chi Running. Start taking glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM. Check out Drtheo.com. Yes, it can be done...

I tore the Meniscus on both of my knees. The right one and then 2 months later the left one.

I was supposed to go for surgery but instead did an intensive 6 week physical therapy routine and since then have kept up with the crosstraining/ strength training and I run relatively pain free. Initially I would use aspercreme on my knees and it worked great. But I don't even need that anymore.

I've spoken to people who have gone for the surgery and are pain free. It just takes time. There is hope.

I sometimes feel a bit of irritation after a long run, but otherwise no issues.  To the Chirunning comment, I did pick up the book/video at the ING Expo (Atlanta) and am looking to incorporate same as a means to ensure a "longer non-shelf" life...

I don't have a lateral meniscus anymore, and they took out a third of my medial. I have plenty of pain free days. If I go for a run and it starts to hurt, I give it five minutes. If it's still hurting, I stop. That's very rare though. I make sure I warm up enough (I try to bike at least a little before each run). I take Celebrex every day, and fish oil capsules. I started taking glucosamine & chordroitin again, but mostly for my other joints.

Good luck!

I had one removed from my left knee in 1979 and it took all summer to get over it.  The  right one is torn but I opted not to have it taken out.  I run and bike without any big problems.   Once in awhile, my left knee flares up but a couple of Tylenol usually takes care of it.

I'll take "relatively " pain free....at least it will be better than training on it all last summer, doing a sprint and an Oly Tri thinking it was tendonitis. Ouch.

On glucosimine too.

Thanks everyone. Nice to know all of you are still out there doing your thang.

I will let ya know how it goes.

I've had 2 surgeries on my right knee and basically have no lateral meniscus there. I'm 18 months post-op and run without pain -- focus on good running technique, get shoes with good support, warm up and listen to your bodies signals. Now, biking, that's different . . . . I don't have pain but I do get some swelling and wobbliness -- I wear a neoprene brace just to help keep my knee aligned and supported . . . . . best of luck!

My knee feels better now then it did for years prior to the surgery.  I can run/bike/whatever with it with no pain.

You can do it *8)

Meniscus is pretty much intact, but I lost a chunk of my femoral articular cartilage -- repaired with microfracture surgery.

do whatever PT is prescribed, and build up slowly -- I'm running about as fast as I did ten years ago now, am doing a 10 mile race on Saturday, and a half-IM in June.

You'll be OK!

I had a piece removed a few years ago, it feels better now than ever! I do take Glucosamine and am very carefull with my shoes. My biggest regret was trying to come back too quick, it was painfull and discouraging. No problems now, and I run more miles now than I did then.

Many years of abuse and 2 meniscus tear surgeries has left me with basically nil left on my right knee. I swim, bike and run with little to no pain. Long distance runs (10+ miles) on concrete starts to make it sore, but it makes the rest of my body sore too so its not because the meniscus is gone. I take glucosimine/chondroitin daily. I think that along with the building of leg strength and flexibility makes it pain free

I had the medial meniscus removed from my right knee 28 years ago. I then had the mcl replaced with the patella tendon in that knee a year later. I've also had part of the lateral meniscus removed from my left knee (18 years ago).

I run pain free most of the time. I'm running 30-40 mpw right now without any pain. Long trail runs on rough single-track can take there toll, and I need to ice massage, or ice bath, after runs of longer then 2.5 hours or I'll feel it for a couple of days.

this is all great news...

anyone remember how long after the surgery you started running again? I will be six weeks out tomorrow and have cycled, swam, strength trained and done lots of yoga...still pretty nervous to run. My ortho siad start on a treadmill at a 4% incline...if I have any pain to stop...

what did you all do? if ya remember...

ps mine was medial meniscus-

I ran 1 month after, and it was a mistake for me. It was still painfull and discouraging, looking back I would have been better off to take it slower on the recovery. I think it varies by person though, I know someone who ran a 5k 5 weeks after surgery with no problem. I did run on the beach to start with after I took some more time off and that was better.

Wow. No PT at all? Pretty lucky... Start by running/walking short periods and increase gradually.

Lost 80% of right lateral meniscus.  I have been able to train for IMAZ this year. I agree with this advice. ChiRunning helped A LOT.

Oh, I did many hours of PT. Just graduated last week when I got to within a degree of my full range of motion on my good leg. Still working the strength part of pt, but doing the exercises at my gym on my own.

Thanks for all the good advice everyone. I think I will order Chi Running too as I have heard so much about if from so many people.

Had a piece of my medial meniscus removed right about a year ago. Started running 6 weeks after the surgery. Biked and swam two weeks after. Started out doing 2 miles on a very soft track. After a couple of weeks I moved to 4 miles on a trail. Just about all my long runs last year were on trails, except 17.5 miles of my part in the Hood to Coast relay, which was 5 months after surgery. 14 mile run on pavement last Saturday at a faster pace than before the surgery. Thru all this I've had no pain and no swelling.

When I was given the OK to run after surgery, all I was told was to 'let pain be my guide'.

Still have all of my meniscus Amy, but glad to hear you are thinking about getting back out there for some running. All the responses sound very positive, but take it slow! By the way, I bought Chi Running for my husband and he really likes it! I have read parts of it as well and it was very interesting.

Wow, I didn't realize how much company I had .  I had about a third of my left lateral meniscus out 22 years ago, and had the right repaired 18 years ago.  The repaired one actually twinges as much as the other.  I don't run high mileage, though.  One of the reasons I like triathlon is that I feel like the crosstraining is better for my knees, and will let me be "competitive" (major italics needed) longer than running daily.

My one word of advice is DO PT!  I didn't have access to decent PT after my repair and I still don't have full range of motion in that knee.

I don't think there is a "one size fits all" rule for returning to full activity. Find a really good physical therapist (not always easy) and listen to your body carefully. Force yourself to go slow -- hold back more now and I think you'll have fewer regrets later.

Just saw the thread

I had about 50% of my meniscus removed (Along with ACL) about 21 years ago and I am doing fine so far. Ran several Oly's and my first Marathon this year.

I have gained some weight the last few years and that has been somewhat of an issue but I am trying to trim back down.

Humid days get a little rough, if you still have your ACL you are probably going to be just fine.

HI

I had my medial meniscus removed over 2yrs ago, and when i run i get pains down my chin and calf. I can survive on flat but downhills and stopping is a nightmare.

What I found to help was a show with lots of cushioning, but its not a long term solution.
