Subject: I witnessed a wreck today.

Was at an intersection waiting behind 2 cars to turn left. The turn arrow came on and the first car went, the 2nd car went, then CRASH. A girl in a BMW hit the first car and ricocheted into the 2nd car - which was a Fire and Rescue SUV. I stopped and checked on everyone. The F&R guy was fine and already calling for help. I go to the girl in the BMW. She was doing 45-50 mph, and never hit the brakes. Her airbags deployed. When I got to the window to check on her - she was still on her cell phone!!!! How in the hell did she not drop it? She opened the door and was putting on her shoes (not because they were knocked off but because she wasn't wearing them). She actually told the cops that the light was yellow and she was trying to beat it. Bad day for her daddy. Idiot girl. The BMW saved her from severe bodily harm or worse.

Thankfully no one was hurt, but it was kind of wild.

Glad to hear nobody was seriously hurt.  And big kudos to you for checking on everyone right away.

Now just think, if you had left home 30 seconds earlier, it might've been you entering that intersection first...

I know this may come out wrong but isn't it an amazing site? The power exchanged between vehicles and the abrupt stop or change of direction is intense. I just came back from a 5 day course on Bike and Pedestrian crashes where we crashed a real car into a "person" and a "person" on a bike. Neat to watch from the sidelines.

Ok, I have to admit it was kind of cool since no one got hurt. My undergrad is in Mech Engineering and seeing how the BMW crumpled the front but not a bit of damage done beyond the windshield was pretty amazing. The SUV had a big bumperguard on the front of it and sustained no damage at all. Which has had me wondering, is he safer with a bumperguard that protects the vehicle or without a bumperguard so the front of the truck can absorb the impact. Once we knew everyone was OK, the driver of the fire and rescue SUV that was in the wreck said, "I wish I had my camera on - that would have been a great video."

Strangely, until someone mentioned it, I hadn't even thought about if I'd been on my bike. I did think seriously about riding my bike out there. I was going to a park about 12 miles from the house to meet my son's boyscout troop for a few hours. I decided to drive so I could head to the gym for a swim later. After thinking about the possibility of being on a bike, I wish I'd have hurt the little rich girl (j/k but you know what I mean). Stupid kid. And it won't be long before mine are driving.

We have the really dangerous grown up version where I live. Soccer moms in big Suburbans and Tahoes WITH the cattle guard on the front. The cattle guard is necessary to prevent damage to the vehicle as they plow through the thousands of deer that inhabit the area. My last run in with one resulted in me getting flipped off for honking at her when she nearly ran me off the road.

Nothing can quite imitate the the sound of two cars crashing. We live on a highway in a small town. People run the stop sign in front of the house all the time. We can be sitting in the living room and hear the crash. Makes the hair on my neck stand on end just taking about it. Glad no one was hurt. Nice of you to go over and check also. A lot of times people are in such shock from the crash they don't thank the first person/people there for helping but the do appreciate it. I have had people send thank you cards months later for being there to help them.

Well if the service provider isn't dropping the call, why should she?

Hmmm..... Add a Jaguar to that list of expensive cars wrecked recently.  Sorry I missed seeing the accident by a few minutes but a Jag drove through the side window of a local bakery.  Two huges panes of glass broken, brick wall crumpled.  One of the panes of glass is in the room where they grind the flower so suspect they would have had to close the business for a few days to clean everything up and ensure no glass was in any of the machines.  Jags front bumber was hanging off, hood was crumpled.  Expect the young driver hit the gas instead of the brake....

They made it a primary offense in NJ, too!  Now those irresponsible drivers that just can't wait to pull over to talk, now can be pulled over for not using a hands free device.  It's also illegal to text message as well.

I'm on patrol this week and have already written at LEAST a dozen tickets.  Everyone please be safe!

Man, I could never live in NJ: Can't text while driving, can't drive around with the snow hat still on my car, can't pump my own gas.

This will not fix the problem as you are still on the phone, IMO.  The only want to make the problem better is ban phone's in cars.

I actually had a gas station attendant that was running around with his head cut off trying to service 6+ cars, say he was going to call the police on me if I didn't get back in my car and STOP pumping my own gas!!

I hate people

Wrecks are scary to witness and to be apart of. It's even worse with a wreck happens because someone was a complete idiot behind the wheel.

You were kind to stop and check on people. At my last wreck (not my fault), no one stopped, even though it took up 2 out of 3 lanes of traffic. The cars just went around us. Nice.

Otherwise... I hate SUV's. The SUV who plowed into my drivers side only scratched his bumper... and did $8,000 worth of damage to my car that is only worth $15,000.

I remember when I would visit my sister down in houston, the first thing she instructed me on was, while driving and the light turns green,, don't go,, look around because someone is most likely running the light.   that one bit of advice has saved my bacon a couple of times..

I'm glad she got the brains in the family

In Houston, that's the three count rule.  I count to three before moving into the intersection after the light changes.  I also am very careful about slowing or trying to stop as the light turns yellow so I don't get rearended by the folks that run red lights.

Dangerous stuff!

I noticed this at a conference in houston last year. Everyone, including cab drivers, paused AFTER the light turned green! Wierd culture..don't go when the light is green, you might get hit!

I don't feel bad for any of 'em. All three were trying to speed through the intersection before the light turned red. Maybe if they were injured more seriously they'd think twice about speeding. Yeah, I know I'm an a$$hole.

and making me wonder if you read the original post - I didn't see anything in the original story about the 2 cars turning left trying to beat a light, but rather were proceeding when their left turn signal came on.

I saw a wreck a back in Fla on my way to the Keys.

I was driving along and some jacka$$ passes me on the left using the left turn lane of a two lane highway.  His buddy is stuck behind me and tailgates me for miles.  I pull over to let him pass.

I end up following these two until the highway becomes four lanes.  They start weaving between all the cars in front and racing each other.  The one buddies car tags the other baddies car and sends it into the oncoming traffic on the other side of the bridge.

I stop to help out and see something I never want to see again behind the drivers side.  Poor lady never saw it coming.
