What are your recommendations for tolerable protein powders?
I have used GNC Pro Performance whey protein, but it seems to leave me feeling bloated.

In the past I have used Max Protein from GNC, it tastes good and dissolves easily.  I don't use it for endurance training though.

I'm not the op, but will answer this. I use Whey protein powder to supplement my daily protein intake. I just don't like meat enough to get 100 grams a day of protein. Well, I like NC BBQ pork sandwiches, but ...

The only low calorie options above are chicken and fish which I don't like. So, the whey powder gives me 21 grams of protein for only 120 calories.

The reason I am asking is because I would like to supplement my diet with more protein. I am pretty lean to begin with and have always been on the thinner side. I am not trying to bulk up, and I know building alot of muscle is counter productive for triathlon.

Maybe I am going about this the wrong way. Whats the best way to keep muscle and strength during the training periods - 20 week training periods?

Again, you really need to understand and define what it is you want to accomplish?  If your goal is to getter faster and stronger in swim/bike/run then it is as simple as doing your training and eating correctly.  There is no need to supplement anything if you eat right.

If you find that even with adequate nutrition that you are still losing weight during training, then check with a sports medicine doc. and/or nutritionist to see if any adjustments can be made to facilitate a more even metabolism.  Or if it is really extreme, then they will suggest some sort of dietary supplement.

For the average endurance athlete, there is absolutely zero need to add protein or weight gain supplements.  You should always strive to handle everything through your food intake because it is healthier for you and tastes much better.

A big part of the bodily adapatations to endurance sports is the leaning out of your muscles.  As long as you are eating the right kind of foods and getting enough recovery in, your body will find its "ideal" weight for the activity you are doing.  Indicators that you are not getting enough nutrition are continued weight loss, lethargy, slow time to recovery, prolonged achiness, tired all the time, etc.  The ket thing to remember is, there is no real NEED for a supplement.  It should be handled through your regular diet.  Red meats, fish, beans/rice/wheat, etc. are all really good sources of protein.  Stay away from too much soy if you can .........

My favorite protein supplement and recovery food?

A pint of Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ....... yeah, it's only 16gr of protein, but 1,200 calories of sugary goodness!

Why do you need "low calorie?"  Based on your avatar (guessing that is you of course!) you look pretty lean.

Why don't you like soy? Not in a protien powder, I agree whey is better, but how about tofu as a protien?

Yeah, I don't care about the calories.  And you can get lean beef that's lower in calories.

I just eat, really.  I don't care how many calories my dinner has.

Soy protein is harder to break down in your system and it is full of phyto-estrogens.  Not really what a growing boy needs .......

(Also, lab mice getting higher levels of breast cancer cells after ingesting it over long periods).

I like tofu (when cooked right) and I eat Clif Bars which are based on soy protein.  But the majority of my protein intake is from meats, rice and wheat.

Mmmmmmmm. Chipotle burritos ...........

Well, I have the metabolism of a 45 YO woman, NOT the metabolism of a triathlete. So, I do count everything that goes into my mouth - or else I get fat. Lean cuts of steak are blechy. Now, give me a fillet mignon any day of the week...

Red miso sauce!  Best version of soy since Natto!  Something about fermenting soybeans makes them yummy.  Oh ya, and edamame, but that requires beer which is not low calorie.

Actually, I've got a question about protein powders.  With all the problems caused by shady manufacturers adding melamine to boost the protein reading on their products (baby formula, pet food, etc...) is anybody checking the protein powders and other supplements?

That's just what I had for lunch .... Barbacoa Fajita burrito with corn and green tomatillo salsa, sour cream, cheese, lettuce.  1,200+ calories of yummy goodness!

(And it was actually this thread that made me want to go there for the second time this week.  No kidding!)
