Subject: Do you find yourself losing interest in other sports?

Since I took up triathlon, which was only about a year ago, I have started to lose interest in the other sports that I do. I used to be mad on golf, and was obsessed with reducing my handicap. Now that my triathlon times are improving, and my golf is getting a lot worse (due to playing a lot less), I find myself not even wanting to play golf at all.

The same is true of tennis - I play in a tennis league, but I find myself getting annoyed that the tennis matches are interfering with my triathlon training.

I am trying hard not to give up these other sports, as I don't want to become too triathlon-obsessed, particularly as these other sports are more social for me. I have a lot of friends that play tennis and golf, but I don't know too many people that do triathlon.

Has anyone else felt the same way?

There are other sports?

Actually, I've never been too into golf, tennis or the like.  Do it once in awhile with friends, but not my 'thing'.  Just like with anything else in our lives, you just have to decide where your priorites lie and focus accordingly.  Most of do this (triathlons) for fun and if it cuts into other things you find fun, then you have a choice/trade-off to make.

I used to play golf every week or so before I started triathlon.  The last time I picked a golf club up was the fall of 2006, I think.  Wasn't a conscious decision not to play... I just lost interest in it.  Playing, that is.  I have lost interest in participating in other sports, but not being "a fan."  I also ruptured my Achilles tendon playing basketball a few months back, which made me even less inclined to play basketball, or tennis, etc...

No way.  If I do too much tri training, I start to desparately miss teaching group fitness classes, weight training, trail running, rock climbing and backpacking.  If anything, it makes me stop liking tris.  This is why I have no interest in deviating from sprint/olys again to do a second HIM.

Yes. I golfed 1-2x per week last year. I've only been out twice this year. I do miss it, but now I suck so it's less fun. Catch 22!

Used to play a lot of tennis and golf.  Had to pretty much give up tennis ten years ago due to a chronic tennis elbow.  Still play maybe six rounds of golf per year - mostly charity scrambles or for business purposes.  I think I'd play more golf if I had more free time.

One of the reasons I was attracted to triathlon training was the inherent cross-training aspect of it, which gives my old bones more recovery time.  Plus I've always enjoyed the endorphin rush from swimming, cycling and running, even though I am and likely always will be pitifully slow.

I did not take part in any other sport before starting tri's. I used to watch the odd game here and there but these days, if it interferes with my training, it comes 2nd. Next week I am taking a weeks leave to go camping with the family, bike comes with as there is a few nice mountains in the area.  Planned the whole trip around those mountain passes. Tri just becomes a way of life

I used to be obsessed with Triathlons, now I purchased a motorcycle and I can go much faster on that than on a bike

I should probably train sometime for my race in July..maybe

I play on a ``semi-pro'' baseball team, which is to say it's a bunch of late-20s and early-30s guys reliving the glory days, but it's still real baseball. I broke my finger earlier this year so I can't play and I really really miss it. So instead I'm doing more endurance sports to fill the time when I'd otherwise be spending practicing and playing baseball. As much as I like triathlon for its solitude and alone-time, I like baseball for the comraderie and team focus just the same.

Similar to most.  I still enjoy playing soccer when I have the chance but mostly because I consider it a decent run workout!  I got into sand volleyball for a bit but now find myself looking for excuses to get out of it.  Same with golf.

I hope to find a good and sustainable balance.

I am definately addicted to tris, but my interest in other sports has increased (probably due to my current location). Triathlons/training definately takes up more time than any other sport, but I took a surfing class last weekend (now I'm going to buy a board) and will be Open Water Diving Certified in two weeks. I love kayaking too.

I think its smart to do something (anything) besides TRI/training just to stop thinking about it for a second and do something a little more carefree and/or relaxing besides a long swim/bike/or run.

Bioteknik - 2009-06-29 2:01 PM not losing interest in mountain biking, don't think I'm losing interest in skiing.

Well aside from the XTERRA aspect - I think mtn biking is an excellent substitute for road biking at times.  (Not all the time)  I found myself faster/less tired/better on the climbs on the road which I can only equate to more time spent on my mtn bike.  Because I certainly don't ride my road bike enough and when I do, it is not on hills.

Well, given that my garage has gear for kayaking (white water and touring), snowshoeing, backpacking, rock climbing, SCUBA diving, mountain biking, paintball and triathlon, it's a safe bet that I never spend TOO much time doing any one of my activities.  I sort of have the opposite problem, that I tend to have not enough time to do everything as much as I like.  If only I didn't have to work, I could spend more time doing the fun stuff (but then, most days, I like what I do, not to mention it's the best way I have to buy all my kayaking, snowshoeing, backpacking, rock climbing, diving, biking, paintball and tri gear).

Of course, when the weather precludes my outdoors interests, I have a slew of indoor interests as well.

well I don't have a road bike, but have seen the light as far as training on the road though.. (with different tires of course)  adding in some solid steady state rides has helped my climbing since strength/anaerobic power wasn't my limiting factor, but endurance.

I started tri training to get in better shape for tennis 3 years ago.  Haven't played tennis in 2 years now.  I am planning to get back into it, but for fun, not competition.  Definitely 2nd to tris.

Quit volleyball last winter since I kept aggravating my knee and shoulder playing Friday night and then couldn't run or swim well on Saturdays.  And being social after the league meant staying up too late to get up early for OWS the next morning.  May play some pickup games this summer, tho, just no more diving or spiking for me.  Is that still considered volleyball?

It's not that I've lost interest in other sports. It's that I've lost TIME.

I'm training for my first IM and with training 10 - 15 hours/week, there;s just not time for much else. I am still playing on a softball team only because it's a team I've played on for 24 years and they need me. It's also the only way I stay in contact with a lot of good guys I've known for years. I know I'm playing with fire a bit, playing a high-risk sport like softball while training for an IM, but it's important to me.

Interestingly, I picked up triathlon as a way to fill my sports void.  In HS, I played volleyball, basketball, and softball.  Never a dull moment.  Then in college, intramurals and a little bit of working out was enough to keep me satisfied.  Then I graduated and entered this dull boring adult real world and got fat and irritated really quickly.  I just felt like a slug and started turning EVERYTHING with my poor hubby into a competition because I had no competitive outlet.  So finally I discovered triathlon and life has been better ever since as a result.  And yes now that I've picked it up I don't really desire the occasional pick up basketball game.  But if anybody wants to come with me, I'm all for it!  Smile

I find I have decreased interest in cyclling after about 90 miles.  8).  But ya, skiing, windsurfing, surfing, roller blading, etc., things that work muscles I need for training for triathon often get moved out of the way.
