Being a displaced Minnestoan, I noticed that there seems to be a lot of you/us on here. Im from Prior Lake orginally and every time I go back I'm astounded at how much the cities have grown. My parents still live in the same house I grew up in and I actually got minorly disoreinted driving up there a few years ago. That's awesome though that the tri scene has grown so much. I'm jealous that you have so many LBS options in and around the city.

I'm another non-native Minnesotan on BT. I spent my first 21 years in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (eh), and have been in the Twin Cities area for about 11 years. I live in Hastings now, but have also lived in Roseville, Cottage Grove, and Prescott (WI).

Sadly, my LBS in Hastings just recently closed. Major bummer. Now the closest bike shop is a good half hour away. Darn it.

Born and raised in central Minnesota near St. Cloud. Now I live north of Minneapolis, near St. Francis. I put Minneapolis in my profile because people have an idea of where that is and because there are two St. Francis towns in Minnesota.

And yes, the whole Mpls/St. Paul and St. Cloud areas have changed a lot.

Born in Texas, transplanted to Edina just in time to lose the accent. Have lived in DC since college, but still love going home to see the folks, eat at New French Cafe and Lucia's, and, of course, do some runs around the lakes

Thanks! I can't claim credit for it (it popped up on the random quote list at the top), but I really feel that it speaks to me

I love Minnesotans! They have to be some of the nicest people on earth.

I'm not from Minnesota but I originate from your friendly neighbor to the north.

Minnesota: the only place where I've been cut off on the road and received a friendly wave for 'letting them in'. Gotta love the Minnesota-nice!

Just another one checking in. Spend some time each summer on Prior with friends. Oh, and I've lived here my whole life, born in Minneapolis, raised in Bloomington. My first long bike rides as a kid involved hopping on my ten speed Schwinn and going to the Eden Priaire Mall, now I get lost trying to get to the Eden Priaire Mall, it changes every time I go to Costco. As for the Tri-scene, that is how I got interested. I do a bunch of 5 & 10K's a year but now I'm getting bored, so just a quick glance and you could almost do a tri a week with a ton of money and more stamina than I'll ever have. Now I find myself in Gear West Tri and bike shop as often as I find myself in my favorite fly fishing shop- BEntley's Outfitters for the record.

So next time you're heading up, let us all know!

I still don't get the real meaning of the term "Minnesota nice". Is it real nice or fake nice?

You know, I think it's 'real' nice. I was once cut off by someone while driving in a snow storm, and they caused me to spin out and into a snow bank. They then stopped, apologized, and helped me push my car back out onto the road. Most cashiers give you a friendly hello and goodbye, runners give the friendly wave more often than not, and people seem to make eye contact, hold doors, and generally seem to be exceedingly polite.

Of course, I haven't lived there since I was 18, so it's possible I'm remembering  it more fondly than it was....

Not sure where in Minnesota you are but the Joe Senser's Sports Bar in Bloomington is a Husker bar every Sat during football season, and there is an AM radio station out of Stillwater that broadcasts the games as well. I have family in Omaha and Lincoln and when they visit, that's where we end up.

Good Luck,
Jay

I've lived here my whole life and I'm afraid it's more just being polite. I have worked with people in the past that have moved here from other states, and yes they are treated with a great deal of politness, but it's hard to get included on events, dinners, etc. That being said, certain areas are better than others. For instance, if you get involved with an organization, you will be included more often that if you just go to work and home. Be it a golf league, curling club (in Duluth or North), softball, running club, tri-club, church group, etc.

Good Luck,
Jay

that's prob. true of anywhere, right? I mean...moving somewhere new is hard.... in order to get included in things, you need to involve yourself in things... I'm sure it's a bit easier in DC since NO one is actually from here, and in MN many people grow up and stay, so they never had to go through the stage of going out and meeting people...but even in DC, you can't just expect to be included, you have to go out and make the effort...

Another Minnesotan here. Born in The OC (yes, THE OC) but my parents moved back when I was very young. Raised in Rosemount, went to college at Gustavus in S Central MN, and live with my wife in St Louis Park. She, by the way, is a transplant from Chicago and LOVES living in Minny. She had no problem breaking into the social circles here but, then again, she was just out of college working at Target Corporate where there are TONS of fresh college grads.

Like a couple of others here, I'm addicted to great local restaurants (Lucia's is a favorite). I think we have a pretty awesome dining scene in what a lot of people consider "flyover country". Of course, if its not NY or LA, its nothing, right?

For all the "Minnesota Nice", there sure seem to be a lot of a$$holes on the roads.

Lucia's, Ristorante Luci, Punch Pizza, Hell's Kitchen, Quang's, al Vento, Edina Grill, Lion's Tap. To name a few of my favorites.

Yeah. Merging is tough. Very short merge lanes. Yield signs at the most inappropriate places.

Oh! Oh! Lucia's!My absolute favorite. Of course, I'm totally biased ... my aunt was best friends with Lucia growing up, so at christmas time we go in for a family dinner hosted by Lucia. She's awesome. Now I'm getting homesick

You guys are making me homesick as well. Our 'fine' dining consists of the Catfish Junction or The Wagonmaster. If I want to drive for an hour or so I can go to a chain restaraunt but nothing too exciting.

Whats funny though, is last tiime I was up there people kept asking me where I live in the south and people in the south ask where I'm from in the north.

I hate to admit this, but the thing I miss the most is a mall. Yes, I admit it, I like to shop. With what 6 or 7 malls in the metro area it wasn't a big deal. Now I have a 2.5 hour drive to get to a decent one. Oh well.

Do you mean a mall or the mall? We got a IKEA across of Mall o' America now. They plan to build a casino next to it.

There is also something about a summer night spent sipping a fine adult beverage at Fletchers or The Loon after a nice meal at Lucia's or after a concert at the Fine Line!

Good Luck,

Where in Louisiana do you live?

I too wish that I could move to Minneapolis or St. Paul, but I don't think that I could take the winters as I have lived in AR and Louisiana for all of the 25 years of my life.
