Came back from my first ever snowboarding class. Just a couple of observations:
1. When I stepped into the hang out area, I felt like I was in some junior high. Or even elementary school.
2. Kids up to my waist keep swerving by while yours truly was dragging the board across like quasimodo.
3. Our class was taught by a 17 years boy! (pretty cute looking)
4. Yours truly, at the ripe old age of 29, was the oldest in the group.
5. Another gal, 24, said her parents got her the snowboard so that "she would stay away from bars."
6. Lots of teenage girls walking around in cute board outfit and full make up, while yours truly was in full metal jacket, ready for war. (Ski jacket and pants, mismatch color, helmet, goggles, various pads.)

What a humbling experience.

Good for you!  I'm planning on some lessons too (cheaper than chiropractor I saw last time I tried).

Snowboarding does have a different (kinda cool) vibe.  When we stop learning, we stop living.....

You survived intact, which was better than my first experience.

Way to go.

Come back from Dark Side Denise. Two feet were not meant to be locked onto 1 board. Two feet = two boards!

jk - anyone who enjoys the thrill of shooting down a mountain is o.k. in my book.
I like tri-ing but skiing is my passion!

I was tempted to throw my arms up to pretend that I was yawning just to knock the punks down. And I would go "oops, sorry, auntie Denise is getting tired." Muhahahah.

LOL!  That's funny.  Just wait- they don't know who they're dealing with.  You'll surprise them after some lessons!

The learning curve is steep, but you'll become a good snowboarder faster than you'll become a good skier.

I found the toughest thing when I started was navigating the crowds by the lift lines. But now it's second nature.

I am dying to go back to Utah! I find myself thinking, "just spend the money, just do it!".

I don't know about this, I grew up sking and had a very hard time learning to snow board.  Now the only time I ski is when we go to places that still don't allow snowboarding.

Same here.  But I'm going to give snowboarding another try.

Snowboarding requires some instruction. Contrary to skiing, you can't just strap on a board and hope for the best as you will fail miserably. Of course you shouldn't do that with skiing either, but far too many people do (hence the cause of so many accidents).

Skiing is a difficult sport that requires a lot of practice. I was an okay skier but not great. My wife was an instructor and she raced for years, so a very good skier. She points out that there are precious few good skiers out there. Most can get down the hill without hurting themselves and others, but that doesn't make them good.

So, what I'm saying is, it is easier to master the form required in snowboarding to become quite good as compared to mastering the form required to become quite good at skiing.

Note that most skiers consider themselves much better than they are.

I tried snowboarding once and about broke my arm.

I believe that, in order to get me back on a board, I would have to get suited up like I'm going to play hockey (kneeguards, elbow guards, hip pads, rear pad, and helmet).

Well, that sounds like my teenage years. I got a season pass every year to the local mountain. Many of my friends did not. They hit 20 with alcohol and nicotine addictions, teenage wives, at least one child, and dead-end jobs at the video store. I hit 20 with bad knees, the ability to ski moguls, and absolutely no ties to the area.

6. Lots of teenage girls walking around in cute board outfit and full make up, while yours truly was in full metal jacket, ready for war. (Ski jacket and pants, mismatch color, helmet, goggles, various pads.)

Time to go Mad Max on their a$$. Punk it up. Duct tape on your gloves, ripped goretex, scratches all over your deck, death's-head skateboarder stickers, jet black powder jacket. Mess up their pretty pink makeup. They can't POSSIBLY be ready for your full-on snowboarder style.

Learned to ski at 5.  At 28 or so, tried snowboarding, half day lesson.  First two hours were the WORST time I ever spent on snow.  Second two hours were the BEST   If you ski, snowboarding learning curve is super steep (already have the basics - i.e., hurtling down an icy hill)

Went snowboarding last weekend for the first time in two years, forgot how much FUN it was!  I'm a pure carver, love that feeling.

When we go for a few days now, I bring skis and snowboard.  I think the snowboarding has made me a better skier.

My first class wasn't that bad. I fell only 3 times (2x on butt and 1 x on hands). But then again, we didn't do anything extreme. Spent the entire time with only one foot strapped in, skating uphill, the slide downhill. Plan to practice on weeknights ahead of the class next Thursday.

Unfortunately, I think I will be putting my tri training aside for a while, at least until I got the basics S/Bing techniques down. I still love you, BT!

Hmmm, memories. I've never been skiing, but I enjoy snowboarding. Well, enjoyed it I guess would be the appropriate phrase. We so little around here some winters that I got rid of my snowboard gear a few years ago for more scuba gear (I've found it's cheaper to recycle hobbies rather than just start new ones). Glad to hear that you had a good time in class. I started when I was in my early 20's and did it for a few years before taking a lesson. After class I wished I would have taken some lessons earlier.

Love boarding!  After your first 2 lessons, you will be flying down the mountain by yourself. The learning curve is like a hockey stick...starts out slow...you even get worse for a bit, then you just shoot straight up in skill and confidence!

My suggestion, wear wristguards. You will most often fall on your wrists and broken arms are the most frequent snowboarding injury.  I still wear one on my downhill wrist, on a toe edge turn, all the time.

*Shamelessly bumping my own thread.*

Key take-aways from part deux:
1. Instructor is getting younger. This time we had a 16 year old GIRL. Our class was supposed to be a 18+ women's class.
2. My new board was very slick. Took me a while to get the feeling again.
3. Rode on the magic carpet!

Seriously, I need to practice more on my own. Otherwise, I will never get a chance to ride the ski lift by the end of december.

That would be pretty cool.  Especially if it turned out that he was a swimmer too.  Then you could have a year-round instructor.

Sorry, J, but that story is way too funny.

**Shamelessly bumping my thread again. This will be the last time, I promise. **

I am done with classes, at least for this month. I can do the falling leaf ok. Still haven't gotten on the ski lift yet. I am totally happy with the magic carpet. Guess I have to continue next month to learn to carve.

Good stuff.

Oh Denise2003 you are making me nervous!  I grew up skiing but decided to start boarding 5 years ago.  I haven't been in two years and only go once a year, so not very often.  The last time down the hill two years ago I had a big/hard fall.  I remember all the falls I take except the last one.  I think I hit some ice and did a few tumbles.  I had just bought a helmet, which I think saved a trip to the hospital, and I was wearing wrist guards but I did have to see a PT when I got back cause I couldn't lift my arm without pain.  I plan on going boarding next month so I need to get my nerve up again.  Since I board so infrequent I always take lessons.  Hopefully easing into it will help.
