Subject: Gatorade substitute?
With gas and food prices getting so high, I am looking to cut my training costs a bit by finding a cheap substitute for gatorade. Right now, I am buying gatorade tiger at Sams, but I think I can get far more for my dollar by making my own stuff. Any one got any recipes for making your own drink? I have heard that maltodextrin powder is really cheap and is a good start. I also found this recipie too earlier today, but don't know if it is good enough for long distance tri use. I think the OJ would kill my stomach after a while.

For any bike ride that is under 3 hours, water will suffice.  But, if you are going to be riding for an extended period of time or in the hot sun, you will need some sort of salt supplement whether it's gatorade or just plain water and salt.  I have, on occasion, made my own drink by mixing equal parts orange juice and water and adding a tbsp of salt.  It works for me.  If you cannot stomach orange juice, then you can add another fruit juice.

I've mixed up 1 tsp frozen concentrated juice with 1 tsp salt in a water bottle shaken well. It's okay.

For some reason, Powerade is always less expensive at my local grocery store than Gatorade, and they're pretty similar in ingredients.  You might check that.

Also, I keep an eye out on nashbar.com and performancebike.com for sales on powdered drinks (and gels, etc) and can usually find some decent deals that way.

I'm not looking for something just to drink, I am actually looking for fuel and calories. I like the extra electrolytes from the Gatorade Tiger. I sweat a lot and had cramping issues when I drank regular Gatorade. If I had the money to spare, I'd try some custom Infinit, but that is just too much for my budget right now.

Consider looking at the rest of your diet.

Are you talking from a nutrition stand point or a cost stand point?

While I think you don't need anything but water for a sprint, a half IM or full is a whole different story.

I make my own sports drink. Half water, half white grape juice, some lemon juice, and a dash of salt. Calories from the juice, electrolytes from the salt, hydration from the water(and juice), and potassium from the lemon juice. It tastes a lot like lemonade.

It was suggested to me (FWIW by a health and nutrition student) to try mixing honey and salt into water.  I tried it, worked fine, I just didn't find it palatable enough.  Might work fo you though.

Both.

Although I was thinking more in terms of the cramping issue mentioned.

I also think people overthink their sport-specific nutrition, and ignore the rest of their nutrition.  Most people have plenty of salt in their diet as it is.

I make my own from the Nancy Clark sports nutrition guidbook recipe.

4 tbls Sugar
1/4 tsp salt
Mix with small amount of boiling water and mix to disolve.
Add 1/4 cup Orange Juice (can also use lemon, never tried)
Fill with water to 20 oz. (or one nalgene bottle)

I like it particularly since gatoraded has lots of corn sweeteners that I don't like.

Currently, I am training for my first HIM in October. Back in April, I cramped up during the run portion of an oly. I also start to cramp on my long rides that are around two hours. I know I need the extra electrolytes. Even for a sprint, I don't feel good unless I take one gel in T1. My daily diet is extremely good. I am trying to lose weight, so eating junk is not an option for me. Some of the recipes posted so far sound pretty good. Thanks all for the help so far.

Those cramps are more likely a fitness issue than an electrolyte issue.

I use the gatorade powder .....more bang for you buck so to speak. I typically only use it after long or intense workouts.

If you're NOT going to supply your own food/fluids at a race...  If you rely on what's being handed out...  Then the ABSOLUTE BEST thing to drink while training is... (drum roll please)...

THE SAME STUFF THEY'LL BE PROVIDING AT THE RACE!!!

Simply send the RD an e-mail and ask what'll be offered up at your scheduled races (again, only if you don't plan to bring your own) and train with that.  Why?  The Golden Triathlon Rule:  NEVER TRY SOMETHING FOR THE FIRST TIME DURING A RACE!

I used to couldn't stand the taste of lemon-lime Gatorade.  And then I raced an Oly and of course what did they serve on the course?  Yup.  The stuff I hated.  After that I learned to get to used to it if I was going to have to drink it.  The same goes for defizzed Coke and chicken soup in IM's.  If you plan to consume it, you better be training with it at some point.

Possibly so. But when I upped my intensity on swimming and running, more than I had been doing, I started getting foot cramps in the pool. My trainer said to drink some electrolytes during the day and once I started doing that on the long training days, I didn't have any more problems with it.

Diluting fruit juice works, but it can get nasty in hot weather.

I buy bulk maltodextrin (50#'s for $50) and mix it with a nuun. The malto provides the calories and the nuun adds flavor and electrolytes.

Really, water is fine for stuff under an hour.  Consider also that you can get your electrolytes during the course of the day from other, non-super-sugary sources that are a much better source of fuel and calories.  I see loads of people chugging gatorade for no good reason and it makes me feel bad for their poor teeth.

For the longer training sessions, you can get Gatorade Endurance in powder form, which will be cheaper and also better for the environment because you won't be using all those plastic bottles.  Gatorade Endurance also has 50% more electrolytes than regular gatorade, while tiger has 25% more... so you can dilute the stuff and get the same amount of electrolytes.

Also, if you are prone to cramping, you could consider the electrolytes from Hammer Nutrition. 120 capsules come out to about 16 cents each... and they contain a broader spectrum of electrolytes than a standard sports drink would.  Read about them here in this lengthy link...

Hammer Endurloytes have very little sodium only 40 mg each. I take Lava Salts which has 255 mg per capsule.

Cheap way to save money is use normal Gatorade powder which is much cheaper than buying pre mixed and then add sodium via sea salt or endurloytes  powder and make your own equal Gatorade Endurance blend or just use regular Gatorade powder and take extra sodium to make up the difference you need.

I didn't consider carrying my custom mix with me in races. It would be fine on the bike, but I don't feel like racing with a fuel belt on. Maybe I should just stick to my current mix since gatorade is used on the course of all my races. I was really just looking for a way to save money. I cannot find powder gatorade cheaper than the pre-bottled stuff at sams.

Gatorade powder is about $7.00 at my supermarket, and it makes 5 gallons of gatorade.  Are you getting Gatorade Tiger for less than that?  That's like 20 32 ounce jugs for 35 cents each.  Maybe I need to join Sam's club.
