Subject: Antiquated phrases

I heard 2 phrases this morning that, if you dissect their meanings, make no senses in today's era.

  • "Roll down the window"... when was the last time you actually rolled down a window
  • "I'll pencil you in"... while some people still might use a paper calender most the time people mean they are adding it to outlook or such

Can you think of some others that have lived past their real meaning but are still used?

I roll down my windows.  That is of course when I have the doors on my jeep.

Teejaay - 2012-11-09 8:59 AM "Roll down the window" is used everyday by my 16 year old daughter ...her car, a 2011 Nissan Versa, has the old timey, put your arm into it, crank em up and down windows! Her friends make great fun of them!!

Really?  I thought I heard the last car with roll down windows was put out this year.  Guess not...

Still, you have to admit we all use the phrase even when are pushing the button...

My car is a 2006 Chevy and I roll down the windows. When I bought it I wanted something cheap I could write a check out for, I don't like car payments, and that's what I got. It gets 33 miles to the gallon, it's a great commuter car.

I also still carry around a datebook, and I do pencil things in.

"Dial a phone number"... rotary dialers on phones have long dissapreared from the mainstream (though i've a lovely 'antique' Bakelite rotary phone in my den)

Most fleet-type pickups have roll-down windows and a basic radio.  So they don't break over time.

Ranches, Construction Firms, our Wind Farm Ops guys, they all have brand new Toyota Tundras or Ford pickups with windows that roll down.

I'll think of a few terms that are out-dated after my next meeting.  There's sure to be several of them thrown about...

I thought about that one, but I you do press the dials on the phone.  What should we say instead "Press this number?"  Or "Type this number?"

That's a good one.  Remember how hard it was to record something on VCR?  And you had to set that timer manually on the machine or you'd miss it. Now adays it's easy-peasy...

"Tape a show" unnnhuhhh.

BR-549 (I'm positive most here don't remember 5 digit phone numbers even if they know this reference)

sound like a broken record.

Make a mix tape

Is this local or long distance?

My local pizza shop (LPS) still has "Call us at HI-555" painted on the wall above the press letter menu board.

Not quite a phrase but the BCC and CC line on email. I don't remember the last time I saw a piece of real carbon paper.

Sometimes on TV I still hear "Don't touch that dial".

Did you get the memo?

I'm watching the tube

Soap Opera (when was the last one solely sponsored by a soap product?)

E-Ticket

Election Day :D

"Filming" something to post to youtube

A film "trailer" was an advertisement for an up and coming film that was played at the END of the main feature, thus "trailer"

DanielG - 2012-11-09 8:39 AM BR-549  (I'm positive most here don't remember 5 digit phone numbers even if they know this reference)

Is this local or long distance?

Along the same line "roaming charges"

Also the other day I was talking about how slow my kids were moving.  I told them they were slower than dial up?  Then I proceeded to imitate the sound dial up internet connections used to make only to realize by the perplexed look on my kid's faces that they were unfamiliar with the sound.

We are getting old.

BR-549 is a reference to a phone number on Hee Haw....also used as a band name by a Rockabilly Nashville group.
