I find that rather interesting. I wonder what that does when one starts in on training for extended races, 3+ hours. Dunno.

Yep, don't speak to me until I've had my coffee and it's entered my bloodstream!  Scientific confirmation of what I knew already. I'm not embarassed to admit I really need my eight hours a night and will skip parties, take-home work, even proper meals to get it. When training hard, I'd be happier with ten hours, but that doesn't happen in the tropics where you have to get up well before the crack of dawn so you can start your long ride/run. Most of my colleagues don't get nearly as much sleep as I do (mainly because they're parents, and some of the singles take their jobs far more seriously than I do, always doing online couses and such), and it shows--they're always getting sick and often look exhausted. I'm convinced that lack of adequate sleep is a big contributer to American health woes such as obesity and depression. People always tell me I look much younger than my age (I was last carded at age 39, so this must be true) and I rarely need more than one sick day a year. Mom was the same. I'm convinced our committment to sleep (let's not call it laziness) plays a part in that!
