Total Time = 50m 15s
Overall Rank = 44/578
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 7/32
Pre-race routine:

Went down at 5 am to cover for my wife, who was volunteering but sick. Got a decent T spot but not great because I was working!

Thought maybe I could get on the podium, but knew the winner from last year was there, and my friend Dana was returning to racing after a layoff, that was fast.

Came in 20# lower than last year
Event warmup:

1 mile run
.5 mile swim
Swim
  • 14m 17s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started far left and ran in with all the folks. It was a big wave, and it got bunched at the first buoy, but cleared up after that. There were 3 buoys, but not in a lone. Some guys were inside heading to the 2d buoy, but I as heading for the third. Moved inside and stole a draft off another guy. Got to the third buoy,he went outside, I went inside.

Hit the beach, long run to the mat, then a long run uphill to T1.. Dana passed me running up the hill
What would you do differently?:

OA swim placng skewed relative to AG because there were a bunch of super speedy ITU juniors, fast swimmers!
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

too long, too long. Dana exited T1 ahead of me
Bike
  • 16m 4s
  • 6 miles
  • 22.41 mile/hr
Comments:

Goal for the bike was NP of 290. Hit 289. Dana passed me (?) about 1/4 mile in, he had shoe problems. We wet back and forth the entire 6 miles, but I got him by :30 in the end.

Felt good because he said the bike was his strength. :) Also, guy next to me in T1 mentioned I hadn't taped over the valve hole in my disc cover, like he had. I had to check after the race. Still beat him :)

I don't think I've placed better on the bike AG than in a swim in any race before. Last year went 17:38 so huge improvement.

Also rode 50 miles the day before with about 4K elevation, so was not fresh
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Dana passed me in T2. But I exited before him. Slightly. Still to long
Run
  • 15m 46s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Dana took off and that was it. LOL. I ran a 15 something, he ran a 13 something. Nothing to do about that but get faster. He ended up 3d so I exited T2 with the leaders, but couldn't hang

Goal was to run 7:50 first mile then pick it up. LOL, first mile 7:21, second 7:31. Last year ran 7:59s so can't complain
Post race
Warm down:

None

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run

Event comments:

Fun race, my first in 2005, raced or volunteered every race since it started. Happy with the placing. Last year my clyde time would have put me on the AG podium, but all depends on who shows up!

Nice race, Chris!  Pretty cool to get to do the same race so many times to see improvements over the years.

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
