Pre-race routine:

Watch the weather reports for 5 day straight listening to how cold its gonna be and if you step outside you'll freeze instantly and break into a million pieces. What like it never got cold here before. Drove up to Rochester into and ever increase winter storm conditions. Found out it sold out so Amanda couldn't run it. She should of just bandited it. For some she wasn't really heart broken and went to the mall instead. Sat in van with Mike trying to come to our senses. Didn't work just put more clothes on. Time came to head to start line
Event warmup:

Day later still cold so there wasn't any.
Run
  • 2h 53m
  • 13.1 miles

Comments:

Well off we go. Like a group of penguins hurdled close to stay. First lap. This lap wind blowing 10-15 to stretches into the wind -10 to 15 below zero. Wind only bothered running west.
one down 38min for 3.3 nice.
Second lap sun setting. Longer walks but good sections of runs.
Decision to bail or go. \
Decide to head for a third lap. Starting to drop in temperature and wind picking up. Both staying warm for the most part. Into the wind can't wait to turn. Wore a cheap pair of run pants mistake. There is a reason you pay for under Armour, Mike's foot starting to hurt. He said he was bailing.
4th lap yes. Knew if I did 3 I would do 4 Mike can't not do it. So around we go. Walking and running. Both wanting to get it done run a little more than walk.
.
What would you do differently?:

Listen to Ken. Don't listen to Mike. Listen to Ken. Don't listen to Mike. Listen to Ken. Don't listen to Mike. Listen to Ken. Don't listen to Mike. Listen to Ken. Don't listen to Mike. Listen to Ken. Don't listen to Mike.
Have Amanda sign up prior to day of. They had 50 spots left Friday morning. Who signs up for this thing with this weather. But sold out 50 spots overnight. Maybe its because you could do 1, 2, 3, or whole thing. But who pays $80 for a 5Kish. \
Was nice to do 4 laps because even we took more time they went by faster.
Kudo's to the awesome volunteers.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to van and tried to strip the clothes and change. My upper outer layer were frozen together and full of snow and ice. Mike didn't know if he should leave his hand frozen or warm them up and endure the pain. No Mike you can stick then between my thighs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fat old man what do you think. I'm blaming on the poor footing.

Event comments:

After ward got some broth and mac and cheese in a "warming tent". Would have worked better if the side weren't a foot off the ground. Now the desicion is whether to do the rest of the series. 4 half's through the year, spring, summer, fall.

I give you & Mike credit for sticking it out in those temps--but yeah, if I paid $80 for a race entry it had better be more than 5K -ish. That's steep even for 10K.

Kudos to anyone who braved those temperatures to run and to volunteer!
