Potomac River Running Races
40F / 4C
Overcast
Total Time = 44m 30s
Overall Rank = 690/904
Age Group = F 35-39
Age Group Rank = 78/93
Pre-race routine:

Bit of coffee, picked up my friend Wendy, had a banana in the car along with half an Uncrustable and some water.
Event warmup:

This was Wendy's very first 5k, and we decided to do 6 minute run/1 minute walk. She was loving the pre race events, so we were in the school cafeteria right up until the gun checking out the tables and getting some free giveaway items.
I moved us outside about 90 seconds before the official start, and we joined the horde moving toward the start.
Run
  • 44m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 14m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

It was hard to keep Wendy in check for the first mile because she was so excited. We paid for it, with the miles getting slower and slower, and she was on the struggle bus hardcore during the last mile. She was such a trooper! She never skipped a run interval, and stayed positive the whole time. There's a brutal hill leading up to the finish line, and we ran every single step of it. So proud, and we did hugs at the top, and then walked for a good minute to catch some breath before running the finish chute on the high school track.
Fun morning, and so proud of Wendy for finishing her first 5k!!!
What would you do differently?:

Nada! Who doesn't love a turkey trot? They aren't for PRs...they're for gratitude and friends and fun.
Post race
Warm down:

We walked back to the car to grab Wendy's packet....she wanted to exchange her shirt for a different size. Then it was some water, and then into the car to head home and start Thanksgiving day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I wasn't going for speed at all. Originally if I was going to run this myself, I would have tried for a season PR. But once Wendy signed up, the goals changed.

Event comments:

This is my second year doing the Reston Turkey Day 5k, and I look forward to making it my traditional Thanksgiving day race. The bulk of the volunteers are made up of the South Lakes High School track and cross country teams. The course is great...wide open streets for the first mile, rollers for the second, and the third is on Reston running trails through the woods. Perfection!
