Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Way off any tri topic here, but: Is it just me or is Raphael Palmeiro possibly the dumbest professional athlete ever? How can he wag his finger at congress, completely denying steroid use, and get caught using steroids a few months later. Unreal! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Big Four Professional Athletes think they are invincible and deserve everything. Everything I've read about Palmerio sounds like he is an outstanding individual but i'd think that as a professional athlete who emphatically denied steroid use to congress would be a little more carefull about what he put in his body. Its like Barry Bonds said somthing to the matter of, I know my boddy better than anyone. I don't use steroids. Well guess what. Its beginning to sound like Jose Canseco knows a little about what hes talking about. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yup good ole' Raffy: He says he never Knowingly took any banned substance. And it's only because of the colective barganing agreement that is preventing him from telling us the entire story. This is a guy that was on the fence for the Hall (Although before this I was a supporter for his induction 500 HR's and 3000 hits, rare company) but now I'd be shocked if the writers voted him in. I used to be a big baseball fan, but not anymore. I loved Sandbergs induction speech, he pretty much came out and called todays ball players cheaters. Bonds, McGwire, Palmero, Rodreguez, Sosa...they can all rot for all I'm concerned. |

The hit to his reputation is too great otherwise. |

Supersonicus Idioticus ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 10 day suspension?? What is it in the IOC? minimum 3 month first time, 2 years next and life 3rd time? I realize he's probably losing $200 000 in those 10 days, but in a performance perspective, that's beyond comparison. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() "I never took steroids. Period." "Ok, you got me, what I meant was I never intentionally took steriods. Period." "Gee, it was an accident. I guess I accidently took them. What? How did I accidently take them? Uh, er, um, I don't know. But nobody else should do them." I find in very intersting that in light of Mr. Conseco's expose, which at first everyone threw mud at, all these superstars seem to be shrinking up and not producing as well. It's unfortunate because in 10 games he'll be back on the field and I don't think this is going to keep him out of the hall of fame. There are just too many uncertainties as to what he did do, how often and for how long. Unless more evidence floats to the top there isn't enough to keep Raffy out of Cooperstown. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just hope they catch whoever slipped the 'roids into Palmeiro's food before they strike again. No one on the Orioles is safe... Maybe OJ could take some time off from searching for the real killer to help find the evil-doer. |

Practically every athlete who's ever been caught has said exactly the same thing. Verbatim. Must be some kind of conspiracy, what with all of these athletes being slipped steroid mickeys without their knowledge. |

I agree, it probably won't keep him out of Cooperstown but I think it should. It would be nice if someone in the baseball establishment (including former players on espn etc..) actually took note of how much these drugs are ruining the game. It would be nice if the rules were changed so that a positive test (or maybe two) for performance enhancing drugs automatically kept a player off the HOF ballot. That might have a real impact. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not to hijack the thread, but what do you think about this: Raffy P and who knows how many other modern players used performance enhancing drugs (to some extent, we can't say for sure if Raffy has been using them throughout his impressive career) as of right now are eligible for the HOF. What do you think about Pete Rose not being in? So he gambled, big deal. The guy was a great player and did it all naturally. I think he paid his price and now should be worthy of getting in. |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Agreed. On part of that statement that is. Pete Rose should be in the HOF AS A PLAYER. He gambled on Baseball as a Coach. He's payed his due and MLB and Commish Selig told Rose to not show up at Cooperstown to sign autographs for his book, which generates a lot of income for him, and they would resume negotiations on his life time ban from the game. He took the last 3 years off from Cooperstown and still no new Negotiations. MLB is missing out on increasing their fan base in the midst of the Sterior era by not working on a plan with Pete Rose. Think of all the attention that could be diverted and swept somewhat under the rug. |

I'm not sure he "did it all naturally" - amphetamines were rampant in Rose's era, and I read at some point that he may have been a user. I think he should be kept out of the hall. He broke the one absolute rule: no betting on baseball. He knew the penalty when he did it, he should pay the price. Edited by MUL98 2005-08-02 11:12 AM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pete Rose DESERVES the hall of fame. He played baseball with heart, passion, and love for the game. Rose ran out every ground ball, every stolen base attempt, and never gave up on a play. Unlike, a lot of the premaddonas that play the game today, he played injured and gave 110% day in and day out. If it meant sacrificing his body to win the game he was the one who bowled over the catcher instead of giving up. He's paid his dues to the game and deserves the HOF. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Palmeiro probably had some of the "mysterious butt cream" that Bonds had. By the way anyone notice that since MLB decided to get (somewhat) serious about roids that Barry "A-Hole"Bonds has that nagging knee that just won't let him come back this year? |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, kind of funny how he'd be back by may. Then back by the all star break. Then back by post season, and now he's not coming back at all this year. I'm also curious why he's making all his statements through MLB.com and not the team. Hmmmm. Maybe Jose accidently tripped and stuck him and Raffy with a needle. He should really have been more careful. |

Rose played hard, no doubt about it, but he also did the one thing that is absolutely not allowed in baseball. He knew that when he placed the bets - he did it anyway - he shouldn't get a walk. Your argument is a little like a criminal saying: "Judge, I know I embezzled money from my employer and the law says I should go to jail, but outside of stealing I worked really hard at my job so you should let me go." It just doesn't wash. |

I'm surprised the the media isn't making a bigger deal of the fact that Bond's announcement came the same day Palmeiro got nailed. It seems to me like Barry might have said: "Oh crap, they are really testing, guess I can't come back this year." |

He's been persona non grata for almost 20 years, it's time to put it all to rest. He's repented and many of his amazing accomplishments will probably never be broken, at least not with today's pansy excuse for professional athletes. Bunch of overpaid cry babies. |
