In Rhode Island they will no longer be allowed to have Father-Daughter dances.  ACLU not surprisingly had an issue with this.  Children having a a strong relationship with both male and female role models is obviously important.  I doubt any men were getting kicked out of these dances for "just" being an uncle or a close family friend.  Why couldn't they just put an obvious caveat on this?

Great example of why people fight against things like gay marriage.  They assume once that happens, we'll have even more of this type of change.  If everyone could be sensible a majority of these situations would work themselves out.

Thank goodness that it wasn't because of Oedipus or Electra complexes.

You do realize that gay marriage is an issue that has far reaching effects on peoples lives and to just callously say that "I don't want to be PC, so you can't get married" is an incredibly shallow thing to say right?

In defense of the OP I don't think that he was saying that.  "They" could use nonsense like the story posted to fight against gay marriage I think is the message.

i think the idea of a father-daughter dance is creepy and odd, but i also have no relationship with my father.

could you imagine if a school would throw a mother-son dance?  what kid would go to that??

when the kids are young they will attend.  When my daughter was 7-8 we went to father/daughter dances.  There were a few girls somewhat older...but I would say by the age of 9 or 10 the girls don't want to do this sort of thing.  Nothing creepy at all about it to me.  And I have a 10-year old son that I think would be OK with dancing with his mom.  In fact, I know he would not have a problem with it.

I don't know man, this one is really low on my "outrage" list.  In the grand scheme of things, nothing's going to change.  The family dance idea is a great idea and will allow fathers-mothers-sons and daughters to attend this kind of event.   (until a family-less orphan sues)

What if they show creationist videos of butterflies while the dance is going on?

I brought up the gay marriage thing, because I believe this is the type of thing people are fighting.  I would imagine most people don't care if two dudes get married. They only care how it affects them, and this is an example of how it affects them.  If we got rid of silly problems like this, I think we'd much further ahead.

I'm willing to bet that two married dudes with a daughter would be all about the Father(s)/Daughter Dance.

haha... um... everyone at my high school?

We had a father/daughter dance, and at some point, they added the mother/son part. I had a blast, but I've got a great relationship with my dad.

When the added the mother/son part, it because a dance for the high schoolers and an opportunity for my dad to meet/mingle with my friends' parents.

Wow.  I get that a lot of this stuff like father/daughter dances, mother/son dances, mothers day celebrations (which I do remember having in school!) were started in a time when 99.9% of kids had a mother and a father to celebrate with, but seriously?  This is like giving every kid a trophy...EVERYONE'S A WINNER!  If everyone can't be a winner, we can't do this!  Some kids don't have moms and/or dads...FACT OF LIFE.  The rest of the kids shouldn't have to suffer and NOT get an opportunity just because someone else doesn't have the parent.  Surely they can let fatherless daughters find an appropriate uncle or cousin or family friend to go with them.

I just don't see the need to take away the tradition...I don't think it discriminates....

One more thing...this isn't all of Rhode Island, the article just says Cranston.  And they were always weird. :D

Kidding.  I'm from Rhode Island...I know Cranston well!  I grew up in Coventry.

Me and my girls at the father/daughter dance.....and my awesome 'Stache.  It doesn't feel creepy and odd yet, but someday it probably will for them.  Until then though....I'm going.

I had a few (very few) friends that did not have a parent of the opposite gender, for whatever reason. They either brought a substitute (uncle, grandpa, parent's SO)... or they skipped it. No big deal.

I also had friends that didn't get along with their parents. They usually didn't go either.

Yeah Meh.  You are still wise, but I have to disagree with you.

Father/Daughter dance is something both me and my Emmy look forward to all year.  It's fun.  She's only 4 now, but at the F/D dances I've been to, the daughters look like they're having fun until the girls are in their teens.

My wife would like the son/mom dance, but I don't know that my son would enjoy it.  Maybe a Son/Mom 5K.

My daughter and me on our way to the Father Daughter Dance last year.

Wow! She really looks like you!

I think this looks really fun and now I wonder about trying to do something like this in my town. Is this a school function or community or what? Is it a fundraiser? What time of year, Valentines Day? What is needed, space, decorations, DJ, any food? What is the age range for the girls? We never had anything like this where I grew up but my daughter would really eat this up.
